2016-2017 Season Thread

Per Jon Rothstein:

Hearing more and more that St. John's is leaning heavily towards using Bashir Ahmed at PF. Built like an ox. Would live at FT line. #SJUBB
Yakwe at the 3 ?

Or if we want to go small and press or run, put Yakwe at the 5, Ahmed the 4, and an assortment of guards at the other spots

I can definitely see that lineup for some spurts

I like it in small spurts, but it seems like the PT of too many other frontcourt guys gets messed with if Bashir plays the bulk of his minutes there.

2 follow-up questions/comments to posts by Paultzman.

-- Any idea how practices are going? I had seen that MC had also texted about practicing at MSG.

-- Rothstein's text didn't sound entirely accurate re Ahmed at the 4. He may be "built like an ox," but would seem to be much more of a 3 (w/ Yakwe at the 4). Perhaps some play at the 4 to spell Yakwe (when Freud) is getting minutes at the 3, but less frequent. Plus, it's already going to be crowded at the 4 next year (w/ Clark and Yakwe (good problem to have)), so would think Ahmed/staff would both want to focus on development at the 3.

@EvanDaniels: "Chris Mullin said Shamorie Ponds is ahead of schedule. The 6-1 guard is likely to start next to Marcus Lovett. Will play PG & SG".

@EvanDaniels: "At St John's watching practice. They'll be much improved this season. They have a young team, but some very talented pieces".

Glad to hear he is ahead of schedule but as has been repeatedly said it doesn't matter who starts. I wouldn't be surprised if he starts and I wouldn't be surprised if he comes off the bench. I would be surprised if he plays less than 25 minutes a game. All good and exciting. We have a serious upgrade in talent at 3 positions this season as well as increased depth , Owens, Richard F , Williams. Can't wait to watch the team.

Per Evan Daniels:

Bashir Ahmed will be a breakout player in the Big East. Impressive 6-6 versatile forward. Can really score. Tough, physical & aggressive.

I felt Ponds was ahead of schedule when I last saw him play in April. I think a lot of people on here don't realize how skilled he is. He is small but a top 50 player who would have been ranked even higher if not for his height or if he played for Tiny at Lincoln instead of the Jefferson campus.

An early opponent incurs another loss per Rothstein
Michigan State now has its two most experienced big men -- Ben Carter and Gavin Schilling -- out with injury. Tough stretch in East Lansing.

Hate to see kids get hurt, but looking at MSU roster, these two guys were there tallest, both at 6'9".

Next up height wise are two freshman at 6'8" and 6'7" .

Article here... Izzo says they will have to play small.... obviously.. http://www.freep.com/story/sports/c.../michigan-state-basketball-injuries/92469118/

I don't expect any miracles in the opening game @ Atlantis, but maybe this makes it just a bit more competitive.. and since my family and I are headed there, any chance to see a close game vs. MSU will be fun. Will be curious to see who we play on our end.

Sounds like they could use Marvin Clark Jr. right about now.

I'd like to go big, their 2 biggest are freshmen. Take advantage.
Sima, Owens, and Yakwe at the 3, maybe go extreme with Fruedenberg as a shooting forward, with of course Lovett at point.
I don't care if MSU is hurt, that would be huge win.

With Ahmed, Ellison, and Ponds coming off the bench?

I'll give SJU a real chance in this game.

We're already bigger than them now with any legitimate projective starting we throw out there, no need to have our guys playing out of position.
