19-20 Roster Construction

Here's a piece from March 8th, 2019 in regards to who Arkansas was recruiting when Anderson was still the head man. Some of these kids have since committed to other schools, but a handful are still available.

Thank you for that excellent info.
Thé positive that I infer from it is that all four coaches were involved in recruiting, they target high level junior college players and 3 and 4 star high school players , all of which in my opinion makes s hell of a lot of sense at SJU.
Would love to also know about player retention, something the previous regime was very poor at.
Of course, not in abundance, but I do know Anderson landed a couple of 5-star kids in Bobby Portis and BJ Young, respectively, in his time at Arkansas. He also landed another 5-star kid, Reggie Perry, a couple seasons ago before he reneged and went to Mississippi State.

Whether we land 'em or not, I'm sure the staff--like all previous staff's--will target 5-star talent.

more importantly judging by what Hog fans say is they do a great job coaching kids up

They had a great class the year Lavin grabbed his. They might have shot ahead of us in class rankings that year.

Great list. Thanks Dink.
Given it's late in the season, not surprising that a few of these guys have either signed or are crystal-balled away, but maybe some plums remain 'possible' like Hamlet and Franklin, top JUCO guys previously mentioned, as well as Sean Miller-Moore, #71 JUCO, a 6'5" wing, Shawn Stith, #94 JUCO, 6'8", 255 PF/C, and Mahamadou Diawara, a 3* ,6'10" HS PF with a 7'3" wingspan all 'seem' still out there.
Who knows, but the primary positive takeaway is that now we have a HC and soon a staff fully committed to recruiting.
Cause for celebration all by itself.
Lol.
Not sure how accurate, but Figgy not listed in transfer portal here:

https://247sports.com/college/saint-johns/Season/2019-Basketball/TransferPortal/
Okay, very curious and I betcha I missed them, but I checked 247Sports' full 2019 Transfer Portal list and couldn't find either Figgy or Trimble on it, fwiw, which may not be much. Lol.

P.S. Rechecked and found Trimble, and did a third search but didn't see Figgy!
Let's hope.

Yes that is what I read as well and that aspect is more important than pandering to 5 star recruits ... i.e., coach up 3 and 4 stars into NBA prospects.

Anyone heard anything about Mustapha declaring as early entrant? I haven't and pretty certain today is the deadline. Will be great to have him returning if that is the case.

Saw him wearing a cornhusker hat, transferring to Nebraska. ;) :)

I believe all players are back on campus now.
Busy week for CMA meeting with kids and mapping out recruiting targets and assignments for Friday

One thing to pay attention to is class balance

Seniors- Heron
Junior- Keita (RS), Figgy, Wright (RS)
Soph- Roberts, Earlington, Williams Jr., Caraher (RS), Steere
Freshman- hahahaha

Main thing is keeping everybody here.l and getting staff all on board to start the weekend. The rest will be a process. We shall see what these guys can do over next few months.

Agreed. I think adding two grad transfers is important for roster balance. Then add a JUCO with a couple years to go. Then add the best HS senior you can this late in the process just so you have at least one freshman on the roster.

JUCO PG is most important to me. So he can run the show for 2 years. And get a 2020 PG to caddy next year.
The immediate transfers can put the ball in the hoop. We have 2 'scorers' right now in Heron and Figgy. You need 3 most of the time to win. 4 on certain occasions when its a shootout.

If Anderson stays true to his fullcourt pressure style, and it's effective, then points should be able to come out of that, even from guys who are not generally considered to be scorers. So, you may not need as many of those as you would normally think (although the more the better, obviously, though only to a point).

I love the idea of that system as much as anyone but maybe our new friends from ARK can speak better to it. I've spoken to some on Twitter and read articles where that style isn't the style many are envisioning. It's changed a bit as the game currently can't sustain that all the time.

I don’t know the status of any incoming recruits that Anderson may have committed to Arkansas that might follow him here to SJU? It also seems to have developed that Mack decomitting to us is really a blessing . If Heron and Figgy stay and Wright can
Contribute , we might not be as bad roster wise as thought . If a miracle happens and Simon returns , we t have the defender to deal with Howard next year . Without the Hausers there , he might get 50 shots a game . Hah ., My BE Dark horse favorite for next season is G ‘town . The 2 smurf sized guards return , McClung and Akingo and they have a big man to replace Govan ready to go .

Javion Hamlet seems an ideal JUCO PG for us, if possible, and TJC is hopefully in hard pursuit.
Hamlet seems maybe a step down from the dynamism of Cameron Mack in scoring (19.1ppg) and overall impact on a game 7.6 a/pg/2.4 stls/g) , but Javion holds his own, averaging 17.8ppg, 6.6 a/pg, was close on a/to compared to Mack at 2.5/g a/to versus 2.8/g for Mack, but is a far more efficient shooter averaging 59% from 2pt range and 44% from 3-pt land versus 52% / 33% for Mack.
He'd be a great 'get'. Let's hope.
And Donte Fitzpatrick Dorsey would be a nice backup PG for us, averaging 14.8 ppg, 49% from 2pt range, 38% from behind the arc, but needs work on assists versus turnovers, which mayne TJ would help improve.
