19-20 Roster Construction

Figured there are a lot of moving parts here so this might deserve its own thread.

As of now:

The 3 "freshman" - Appears that Roberts, Williams and Earlington are all staying.
The 3 sit-out transfers - Steere, Caraher and Wright also look like they aren't going anywhere.
The 3 returnees - Heron. Figueroa. Keita. Absolutely need to keep the first two. The key to having any success next year.
The 2 departures - Simon (pro) and Trimble (transfer). Doubt MA can convince either to stay, but we'll see.

If Heron and LJ both stay on board, that gives us 9 scholarship players on the roster for 19-20. Would like to see us add one HS senior and a pair of grad transfers.

We are!

I know people are down on Keita but I believe he can be a productive player in this system if healthy and motivated.

Also look for JUCOs given CMA’s history.

Reopened his commitment

I think Keita needs us more than we need him

Ah, thought I remember his initial commitment. Saw some video on him. In light of MA new hire, Manuel may seem to fit? Worth pursuing?

I don’t think Manuel moves well enough for Mike Anderson’s system. Steere certainly does.

Not the biggest Keita fan, but could come in handy if Steere has to miss first semester.

Not a Keita fan at all
Not a great player and, allegedly, has attitudinal issues
Not a good combination IMO
If CMA can get LJ and Heron to stay, we'll be fine
Getting Simon to also stay would be the icing on the cake

Maybe he will develop differently under new coach. We need players right now, so I’d rather keep him than lose him if that were an option. It assures we have at least 2 big guys here this season. I assume the staff will be looking to add a few grad transfers to bolster us.

Keita will find soon enough that Anderson runs a tight ship, from what I read, re attending classes, abiding by team rules and practicing hard every day. Will he buy in or be high maintenance again? If the latter, I suspect Anderson won’t tolerate it.

Again wonderful to read that CMA has a system re behaviour and class. Thank you for that confirmation.

3rd coach is a charm?

It’s amazing 3 days ago we were searching for warm bodies now we are focused on roster construction rather than emergency reconstruction.

I posted this on the JUCO thread (see below) but thought it was worth reposting here.

It appears that Coach Anderson had previously been involved with the #17 rated player on JUCO top 100 list Point Guard Javion Hamlet. He was being looked at by Arkansas while playing JUCO ball at Northwest Florida State College (see article link below). Hamlet had briefly commited to Buffalo and has been recruited by other D1 programs of worth and is currently not commited to a school. He is a lefty, with a good assist to turnover ratio, excellent shooting percentages for free throws, from two and from three and says that he fits the style of play that Coach Anderson runs.

I don't know anything about his current status however if we are going to bring in a JUCO point guard other than Mack, then maybe Javion Hamlet might make sense. FYI Coach Anderson's assistant coach and mentee T.J. Cleveland was the lead recruiter at Arkansas involved with Hamlet's recruitment.

Hamlet would be great, because he's tall enough to slide over in a dual PG set with hopefully Curbelo.

And if TJ Cleveland is about to rejoin his mentor, maybe he can get Javion on board. Talk about great timing.
Lol.

[quote="MJDinkins" post=345568]Here's a piece from March 8th, 2019 in regards to who Arkansas was recruiting when Anderson was still the head man. Some of these kids have since committed to other schools, but a handful are still available.

Thank you for that excellent info.
Thé positive that I infer from it is that all four coaches were involved in recruiting, they target high level junior college players and 3 and 4 star high school players , all of which in my opinion makes s hell of a lot of sense at SJU.
Would love to also know about player retention, something the previous regime was very poor at.
