17 wins over/under?

I think it is impossible to estimate our win total as this is an entirely new team with nothing to go on. I will give the ranges below which we could go anywhere from 10-20 (disappointing) to 20-10 ( NIT, NCAA bubble). I am concerned about our non conference schedule because I think the team will take some time to gel and hopefully is playing its best ball in the Big East season.

4-5 Wins - I don't know who we are going to lose to but pretty sure we lose at least once.
Bethune Cookman
Binghamton
Delaware State
Fordham
Cal State Northridge
LIU Brooklyn

Minnesota, Penn State and Tulane - 1-2 wins

Bahamas - 1-2 wins

Villanova, Xavier, Butler and Creighton - 1-3 wins
Providence, Seton Hall and Georgetown - 1-4 wins
Marquette and DePaul - 2-4 wins
 
Under, by anywhere from 2-4. Young team, young staff+tough conference + few gimme wins=growing pains. It will take time to find the right mix. Other concerns are talented but undersized, and underweight,, backcourt. Being thrown to the wolves early means either a great education or a loss of confidence. I'm going for the great education angle. Team will gel late, but maybe too late to get past 15, if that many.
 
Good post A2, but I think the Bahamas is 0-1 win.

I was going to put that and was probably overly optimistic on that one. We should beat Old Dominion.
 
13-14 wins with a tough defense and improved play down the stretch would be a significant step forward. I'm hoping we see these guys enjoy playing the game and more of us coming to the games.
 
I'll go under, but not by much. I'm pegging them at 14 wins, but would not be surprised at all if it's in the 15-17 range. Really depends on how quickly the first year players adapt to the college game. And we really need Mussini, LoVett, or Ponds to step up as the floor general.
 
Hard to predict. We are still young. I would like to see steady improvement as the year goes on and an NIT win. I think the following year is when things are going to start gelling and we will be NCAA bound.
 
Would like to see greater student and alumni support for the program this season.


Will be an easy team to cheer for.

Chris has a good group of young men representing St. John's.


Looking forward to the S.I. scrimmage this week.
 
i am very surprised with how many of you think we win 15 or less but to each his own....we all have our opinions. and I guess maybe you are just setting yourself up for a surprise success instead of failure??...I just find it insulting ( not sure that's really the word im looking for) when those that say we are gonna win more seem to get jumped on by those that say we wont.......that's just your opinion....we have ours......time will tell who is in the correct camp.........in the end we are all rooting for these guys to succeed......im ready for some beers with some of you guys at some games this year.....cant wait for the season to start!!!!!!!
 
Over.- Lovett Ellison, ,Yakwe Sima Mussini, & Ahmed all have experience and talent No sweat at all.

Sorry Eric but I find the discussion very civil. I don't share your sentiments. However , while we have a deep and talented team the teams that are very successful have great talent , or a very experienced team or great coaching or a combination of the foregoing. We don't have great talent , we don't have a very experienced team and no one will say at this point in time we have great coaching. We had 8 wins , lost quite a few players but got better and more talent.
If we get 15 wins it will be a good sign. Anything more would be great.

I'm not saying its not civil....All I'm saying is it seems every time one of us more optimistic fans says we potentially could be dancing we are always rebuffed by the others.... just because you all feel 13- 15 wins could be max potential doesn't mean its true and will happen and what we should expect and be happy with.... but its stated as if it is fact... but its just your opinions.... I don't discredit those posts.... you all are entitled to your opinions as are the more optimistic people are....I just differ in my optimism for the new talent along with the expected improvement in our core players from last year...... no real ball handler last year cost of 4-5 wins and there is your 13 wins for last year alone....I'm very optimistic with our potential and well rounded team this year

Please feel free to be optimistic and I certainly won't attempt to discredit your opinion I just tried to respond with my opinion. Again I feel the debate is great , sorry you don't. And yes if we had Lovett last season we would have won a few more games. But unfortunately we didn't. Had we had Lovett I would feel far more confident in our having more than 15 wins as we would have 3 returning starters , but we don't. Our most important player will be a redshirt freshman. But I am digressing and stating why I believe 16 wins is a big number and will stop as that is not what you want to hear.

You can keep giving your opinion... of course that's fine. Maybe its right... maybe its wrong. As could mine....I agree debate on this is great.... time will tell
 
15 seems attainable as a reasonable goal that will not come easily. 17 does not. But that's why you have to play the games. Preseason is the best time to predict 20 wins and get excited, but I'm afraid those hopes will be quickly tempered when the reality of some early stiff competition sets in. I love the optimism, and hope it translates into ticket sales to support these kids through what will likely be a season of growth.

Being optimistic is great. But some on here then start bitching and pointing fingers once their unrealistic goals are not met. Might get better players than we have had but the entire process to become good will take time. I for one don't care about any number as long as Mullin looks more comfortable. That is really the big thing for me this season. 14, 15, 16 or 17 wins should not define this season.
