Possible Coaching Candidates

When I watched the second half of last nights Siena vs. Iona game on ESPN+ it did not appear that Coach Pitino had the same pep in his step that he had once had.

Siena’s Maciariello had a game plan and his team played his plan. Iona, on the other hand looked at times as unorganized as St. John’s team do.

Siena is Maciariello’s first college head coaching position, this being his 4th season. His record is
71- 36 overall (63%) and
47-19 (71%) in the MAAC
Maciariello’s team has two first place finishes in the MAAC and is currently in 1st place.

i am not suggesting Maciariello for St. John’s but based upon last night, and his record he will likely have opportunities beyond Loudonville in the future.

He is a solid coach and recruits well for MAAC. If Pickett did not transfer to Penn State, Siena would be type of team if they got MAAC bid could possibly, depending on matchup, steal a game in Dance

All that is true but Pickett was brought in by previous staff. Unreal the type of player he’s become on the national level.

Sorry, did not mean to imply he recruited Pickett.

By the way Mase, your stats analysis on Twitter and here is so interesting I am suggesting you be the SJU staff analytics maven in the near future. You really produce great “stuff”! Not sure if that would be an opportunity or punishment. 😇

Haha thanks Paultz always enjoyed the numbers. Helps me stay interested while the games push me further away. During day I am a data analyst for NYS so perhaps there is a write off somewhere 😅

I'll throw another name, VCU Coach Mike Rhoades.

Not sexy but solid and VCU is as close to a high major without being in a P6 as almost anybody.

Georgetown makes sense with him esp if they whiff on Pitino.
I’ve thought about Rhoades a bit as well. The issue with him is that while VCU has still been good, they’ve kind of dropped one notch below where they used to be under Wade, Shaka, and Grant

Carmen Maciariello

At this point I wouldn’t mind a guy like Maciariello if the administration is dead set against Pitino. I won’t be the immediate turnaround that it would be under Pitino but a young hungry up and coming coach that could be here for a while might be better in the long run. I’m just ready for anyone except CMA next season.

I don't think we even need to have this mentality of getting someone "who will be around awhile". Just get whoever can be the most successful, and if that coach moves on in a few years, that probably means he elevated the program for the next coach.

Exactly!

I just hope everyone is prepared to be disappointed at the list of candidates that comes out once CMA is let go. Unless we luck into Pitino, pretty sure no hot up and coming coach is going to want to make this their next destination.

Job would be a much more appealing destination post-Pitino.

Everything about the program changes for the better one second into a Pitino tenure.
Apologies if this has already been posted, but did anybody catch the recent Fran Fraschilla interview in which he talks about the state of our program? In my opinion, he comes across as an insecure, arrogant jerk.

He mentions about five times how he was responsible for recruiting the players who took us to the elite eight (true of course, but give it a rest!). He also still sounds bitter about being fired from SJU for flirting with other schools. (no mention of exposing his genitals to Tyrone Grant). He claims Dick Vitale and Sonny Vacarro, among others, said he should have taken the Arizona St. job.

He concludes by saying SJU is no longer a good job although he grudgingly concedes that nothing compares to a packed MSG with SJU playing well like during his last game coaching SJU in the Big East tournament where we lost in OT to Syracuse.

Incidentally, Fraschilla conveniently fails to mention that the Syracuse game was not his last game coaching at SJU. His true last game was a disappointing upset loss to unheralded Detroit Mercy in the NCAA tournament. In any event, age hasn’t mellowed Fraschilla. He’s still a jerk!

Just one thing to add. Listening to Fraschilla bitterly describe his termination as coach of SJU more than 20 years ago makes one appreciate what a gentleman Lavin is. Lavin had/has many flaws as a coach, but he did a nice job with this program. Can’t help but wonder if he didn’t get cancer and miss his second season what would have been.

I doubt Franny mentioned in his podcast that he subsequently “resigned” at the University of New Mexico after 3 non NCAA finishes and amid an uprising of his players.

Lavin is a classy man.

He knows while his job status was in limbo there were negotiations through intermediaries was going on behind the scenes simultaneously.

However, instead of blaming an entire university for the sins of a star struck few, Lavin has walked away the bigger person. He still roots for SJU.

And it is no coincidence that he is welcomed back to both the media and coaching world.

Fraschila on the other hand, is an ass. He wanted a bigger job after one year, and when he went to New Mexico, flamed out because he cannot manage an ounce of decorum on the sidelines (remember the 911 comment?).

But going back to your original thought, Lavin would have recruited very well here if not for the cancer. Also, if DJ Kennedy does not get hurt, that veteran team could have made a final four run, and that would have changed everything.
