Practice Tidbits

Finally got a chance to catch up with my people, got a couple of tidbits practice:

1) Joel is playing at a high level right now. Obviously it’s practice, but he’s carried over from the end of last season. A lot will ride on big fella this year so it was good to hear.

2) Curbelo is very very talented. Still has to learn how to go all out. First, second, third efforts. Really responds when he challenged by coaches. Now he needs to learn how to bring it regardless of coach gettin on his a$$.

3) Posh looks and is playing more comfortable. Starting to lead, and is getting to showcase more of what he can do. Kid is a basketball player, straight up. He’s really embracing not having to handle the ball so much. Slipping into mid post to make plays, cutting, offensive rebounds, baseline slips.. he’s finding even more ways to get it done now that he has a mate in Belo who can take the load off.

3) Pinzon has been looking good, consistently good. Will make a push this year for time. Shooting the ball really well right now.

4) Kolby King will be a good one down the line. Ultra competitive. Skilled, never gives up on plays. Tough kid.

5) Storr has a legit chance to be a future NBA wing. Bouncy, stroke has been looking really. Has to learn what most high school kids learn, which is not taking any plays off.

That’s all I got for now. I’ll drop whatever I can get closer to the DR trip if it comes.

Thanks BigRed2 for providing some positive news and reason for excitement in the off-season. Obviously the lack of 3 point shooting and shot making in general is a concern. However, Pinzon looked good shooting the 3 in limited attempts. Even his misses were on line. If Pinzon becomes a consistent 3 point threat, and Storr adds some long range shooting, maybe we will be in business. Still, it will be what our guys do on defense that define this team. I don't know how far this team can go, but they will not be a fun match-up for anybody.

Awesome! Thank you for the report.

Any tidbit on Jones?
He knocked down a few 3’s in five on five drills. To add what BigRed2 posted, Soriano looks even better physique wise than he sit last year.

Nyiwe looked good, playing with confidence and threw down some nice athletic dunks with cruel intentions over a couple of people after receiving passes and going hard to the rim.

Everyone played hard and went all out,

Haaaa that quote made my day !!!

Thanks! Going all out in practice is a clear sign that this is going to be a special team. If they lose it won’t be from lack of effort. I’ll take that because they’ll get more victories out hustling other teams.

Hard for me to judge anything from a practice but I agree on the Nyiwe moves which were more authoratative than anything I remember from him.

One other thought is it’s clear Storr has a lot of natural talent. Great basketball body, nice looking jump shot, hops, etc. We will see how it translates, especially freshman year, but he has a lot going for himself.

Unless a three point perimeter game evolves, this team will struggle. ( Note last year's team when Posh and Champ struggled to find a three point range) If the defense will define this team then there better be a change in the defensive philosophy as the defense has been anything but efficient in the past three seasons especially against the three ball and against full court pressure. Talent is only part of the equation. An efficient perimeter game. solid defense and workable end game strategies play a major role in the teams success. Hopefully the coaching staff and players enter the season having addressed these prior issues.

Rothstein also; An underrated key for St. John's this season: Joel Soriano's evolution as a rebounder. Only averaged 5.5 RPG last season. Only two games with double figure rebounds.

Rothstein noted
This is without question the deepest perimeter that Mike Anderson has assembled during his tenure at St. John's.

Should make Red Storm a better pressing team.

Very curious how St. John's fares in end of game situations in a deeper Big East. Red Storm were just 3-7 last season in games decided by five points or fewer. 0-4 in games decided by five points or fewer in the final nine games.

For once I agree with Rothstein (starting 5 prediction) at least to start the season. Also interesting to hear from several different sources how King is impressive and will play a fair amount as frosh. Sounds like CMA may have found another under recruited diamond in the rough.

Credit to Panther’s eye he said like a month or 2 ago King is a player and better than his ranking and he’d be really good 4 year player. He nailed it with LJ the first time he saw him and looks like CMA has found another diamond in the rough even if not an impact player right away
