Fresh start

There are definitely some things to work through but a few notes:

  1. There were two migrations completed overnight. One migrated the existing live redmen.com forum. The other migrated two old archives with posts and other data going back to 1999. In the first migration we were not able to migrate over Private messages. This new system has a very powerful and updated forum and private messaging system. But we did not have an easy path to migrate. We also could not import user avatars and other photos you may have had on your redmen.com profile. These things are not lost. You can still access them and if you like, update your profile and your fancy new account. But strange enough some of the second migration (the older data) we were able to import some of those things. So you may have some private messages in your account now going back many years. And some of the accounts got their avatar updated but from their very old version.
  2. I will be leaving parts of redmen.com functioning for a little while in order to help everyone migrate and to give everyone time to clear out private messages and collect old avatars or pictures.
  3. Some of the old archives are currently visible to all members. Have fun with that. Some older forum archives and in that migration ( some posts and private messages from 1999-2011) some of the old avatars are private messages were imported.
  4. I believe all of your accounts were also merged properly. So your past redmen.com self and your account as it was yesterday - here now and moving forward.
  5. The Rookie Forum still lives. But we have a different approach. Rookies can now post in the main Fan forum but noobs can still have a place to be noob... Moderation has some new elements and if people don't behave they will be banned. New processes and standards forthcoming. For now -play nice.
  6. Everyone will need to reset their password on the new forum. As long as your email was valid, this should be no problem. If it wasn't valid, contact me and we'll fix it.
  7. IMPORTANT: no more user handles. Your username is your handle. Whatever your username is, that is your handle. For anyone that had a username that was different than their handle/display name, you can change your username in your account.
  8. IMPORTANT: For anyone whose username was your email address I had to substitute a random username for you. You should definitely change your username in these case because the ones that I gave you are super lame and people will feel sorry for you for representing so poorly... ;)
  9. There will be ongoing updates and tweak over the next few days. I encourage anyone who needs help to contact me directly. I will also be publishing some tutorials on new features like using the forum as an app on your phone and https://red.fans

I know there are some issues to work through and new features to absorb. And oh yea, I hope you enjoyed my April Fools message.

It's good to be back. I'm not sure anybody remembers me or even that I should be remembered lol, but I was a regular/semi-regular who used to post here under the handle "Plexxxx" back in the early days of redmen.com (1998 to 2001 mainly). At that point my life changed quite a bit and I lost my desire to contribute and then later I lost my login information, but I have never lost my love of the Johnnies. Even though I haven't posted in 20 years, I have read the forum on a daily (usually multiple times a day) basis during that time away, so while I may be a considered a new jack to most of you, I am anything but. I look forward to talking St. John's hoops with all of you again. Thanks Paul, for making this the best place for SJU fans to gather and holding that mantle for nearly 25 years and counting.

Welcome back! Great post...

It auto saves a draft. You see the icon that looks like a floppy disk? click the little down pointing carat and you can save or delete it. This will be particularly useful for those members that enjoy composing extremely lengthy posts.

That's great! Welcome back. 25 years ago I was so busy that I never would have even looked for this site or would have had the time to have posted. It wasn't until about 10 years ago when my live slowed down dramatically that I found this site and its now part of my daily routine. As much as I get frustrated by the teams performance, I hope we can stay relevant enough that people will keep posting and the site is a place for me to go.

Thanks Paul for alll of your work! Looks great. I didn't see this mention, possible I missed it, but are you doing away with the Redmen.com branding and switching to Red Fans? Not that it matters to me either way, was just curious.

red.fans is the current and future. redmen.com will stay open as it is now for an undetermined time.

OK I'll enable users to change that but right now there is no on/off switch to make that happen so I can do it manually for anyone that wants a
change.
If I’m sending this to you , am I now all set for Red Fans? Is there anything else to do ? Thanks , slyfoxx1968 PS - are our friends automatically transferred over to this new site ?

Paul - silly question.... from a non-IT guy

I'm used to seeing web addresses like "www. .com, .org, .edu,, .gov" etc...... I've never seen any web address structured like "red.fans" Is ".fans" something new for web addresses in general?

you are set. this system works a little different. I'm going to put up some video tutorials when I get time. I'm still catching up. On this system you can follow/unfollow and you can also block other users.

the new domains were introduced over a decade ago but for the most part they were not adopted other than some trends like ".mobi" which now is barely used but for a while it was a hot new thing. Everything ended up reverting to .com. But even before that there were a lot of domains like country domains: .com.uk, .com.au, .at, .es, .mx, .cn .ru. etc. These were/are more popularly used in their own countries but even there in a lot of cases they tried to use the .com. But over the past 5 years domain usage is very different and a lot of the new domains are being widely adopted. For example a lot of tech startups are using ".io" domains. And there are new "web3" domain systems being setup that serve blockchain/crypto purposes like artists having a crypto domain setup to receive payments for their NFT creations or NFT investors/traders for the same reason... .com is still the most popular but this is definitely changing unlike in previous years when other domains tried to make headway into popular usage. Google has its own domains such as: .xyz and there are some wild ones like ".donuts"

On a Site protection / Security issue , have you taken precautions against Fun reappearing ? 😀😃.

I didn’t realize this thread existed. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Everything about the upgrade is great and no more multi-quote! Amazing job. One minor thing…I used the recent topics tab a lot with the old format, I’m guessing that’s gone? I’ve been using the new posts tab instead which, I guess, clears anything I’ve seen.

@guinness77 on a phone the lightning bolt icon will show new posts. Otherwise "What's New" tab will show what is new for you the specific logged in member since your last activity.

Now that I got the hang of What's New I'm back to normal, well relatively normal. But as a newly old man gotta ask, what's a threadmark?

it's basically like a bookmark in a thread Since some of our threads get into hundreds and even thousands of responses I thought this would be a useful feature. Like for example in recruiting thread, maybe set a threadmark for the first post where a recruit indicated he was a commit... Pre-season prognostication vs post season reality... Or in the MASSIVE everything @mjmaherjr thread maybe a threadmark for each lobster review... ;) Seems to me there could be a lot of useful applications.

We'll have to build it out over time for it to get useful for everyone. Give me a couple of weeks though. I haven't even gone over this with the moderators yet.
