Conference Realignment

We've made it through an August without any UConn Big 12 rumors, the last time we didn't hear any was 2022. In 2023 and 2024 they were coming off of NCAA Titles a few months prior. Football obviously drives conference realignment, but basketball played a major role in the rumors. Also think the Big 12 wanted to destabilize the Big East during their TV contract negotiations. This year St. John's owned the Big East, so UConn's appeal went down some I'd imagine.

My daughter graduated from Delaware in May and worked on a project to help with football attendance projections. Beating UCONN is great way to start the home schedule.
Congratulations on the graduation. Are they thinking about moving up to the FBS level in football?

They did this year...Conference USA

The only downside no matter how Delaware sells it, is that Conference USA doesn't make sense as a longtime home. It's a lot of travel to schools that aren't exactly household names. Down the road as alignment keeps shifting maybe they can find a home playing more regional schools.

Agree.. depending what happens to ACC - potential to get some ACC & eastern American conf teams and throw in Uconn or Umass or Buffalo in MAC

Last week UConn blew a big lead @ Syracuse and lost in OT. This week they once again blew a lead and lost in OT @ Delaware.

Could easily be 3-0 and making some realignment noise, but instead it's turning into a disastrous season for them.

It'll probably be at least 5-6 years until some ACC schools leave (2030-1) since they've recently reached a favorable settlement with the top schools. I agree at that point UConn may be an ACC target (with several other schools such as USF ahead of them), but the likelihood of taking UConn before the conference collapses is zero IMO.

The biggest threat for the next few years remains the Big 12, but UConn's football taking a step back is huge in preventing that. Further, in 2030/1 a LOT of major TV contracts will end (Big East, Big 12, Big 10, and ACC's exit fees will decrease). Really tough to predict what college athletics will look like by then.

So, in short I think we'll remain conference rivals for at least the next 5 years, which is great since the rivalry benefits both schools and the conference. After that, who knows what conferences will look like (or if they'll even be a thing still), but for now I'm happy their football is terrible enough to keep them in the Big East.

I lost a $5 12-team parlay bet for $9,800 payout because of Uconn. It's absolutely crazy they couldn't handle a D1-FCS roster like Delaware. Delaware is FBS in name only after the recent jump and just has its hands full with lowly Delaware State that routinely gets smacked around by teams that were in the same conference as St. John's.

I looked at their pathetic schedule and thought they'd win 6-7 games by default.
