Conference Realignment

I don’t see Wake dropping football.
There's no need for drastic measures if there's still some semblance of an ACC after Virginia and UNC go to the Big 10 and Clemson and FSU (and maybe VaTech and/or N.C. St.) go to the SEC.

But if the rest of the teams panic and try to join the Big 12, then some schools are going to be faced with hard choices. Would a school like Wake join a much lesser conference just for football? Do they want to be independent in football? They don't currently operate football at the monstrous deficit levels as a lot of other schools, but what happens to that relatively minuscule deficit if they need to play in a non-name brand conference?

Wake won't be able to keep it going too far after the ACC is through. It's a simple math. They are barely scraping by now with the ACC media money.

After the ACC is raided, it probably merges with the Big East and has lousy to mediocre football until it becomes economically infeasible to continue.
Another league would probably form with old ACC schools. I think they would remain a program with no chance to make the playoffs that keeps football as long as possible.

Increased chatter of UNC's lean toward SEC at right time w/ exit fees or sooner

I think UNC and Virginia are more in line with Big 10 schools, but there doesn't seem to be much doubt that the SEC would love to have a presence in both states. Luckily if they swing and miss on one or both, N.C. State and VaTech would kill to take their place.

From the article:

“But, it would take a lot for the school and its fans to put football over its beloved basketball.“

A lot of what? I have no idea, inquiring minds want to know…

Also, in what capacity will fandom play a part in this? Based on previous conference migrations, I have no doubt that the fans will play a major role in the administration’s decision.

FWIW, UNC sold out all season tickets for football this year before individual games could be put on sale. And team may only win +/- ~7 games... Ended up buying off SeatGeak for Clemson, Virginia & Richmond games. Fan base picking up on FB.

Also, next year, they currently have the # 18 class for recruiting. (7) 4-star & (26) 3-star

That chatter sounds to me like it’s coming out of chapel hill and not out of Birmingham, much like the UConn to the Big 12 chatter came out of Storrs and not Irving.

Don’t agree at all. UNC is one of the few very clear “prizes” left in realignment. Mega brand, new territory, and blue blood in basketball. The only bigger one is Notre Dame. Florida State is probably right behind them. Then Clemson. After that, eye of the beholder (UVA, Stanford, NC State, etc.)

I get what you’re saying and if I was running a conference, I’d love to have UNC but apparently nothing matters except the additional dollars you can bring to the TV contracts because of your football program. I look at OU and UW whose football revenue would run laps around UNC taking 1/2 shares for an invite to the big 10. I look at Stanford whose football program is comparable (except with more recent success) but had to crawl on its knees to get an ACC invite. I just don’t see anyone rolling out the red carpet for UNC.

I think the next round of expansion is more likely to involve teams like OKState and Texas Tech going to the SEC (for less than full shares) if and only if the Big 10 raids the ACC (also for less than full shares) All of this will seemingly occur in 2030 when the big 12 media rights deal expires and the ACC exit fee drops to sub 100M.

I know it sounded otherwise, but I definitely agree with you that UNC is the prize of the remaining school (non ND), I just don’t see anyone lining up to take Florida State or Clemson either. But I guess it’s all up to Fox and ESPN. If we are lucky the rivalries we all love will make it at least for 5 more years.

I’m getting depressed just thinking about it.

I believe UMiami (think: South Florida TV market and recruiting) also has value to the B10.

One article I read said that Georgia Tech, although not the value of UNC, Florida State, Clemson or UMiami, has more value than Pitts and SU because it brings the Atlanta TV market.

As a Jersey guy we knew the Big 10 took Rutgers so they could bring UM or OSU alums who work in the city, take them to Piscataway, see their team crush Rutgers then have a fund raising event back in NYC. I assume they could do the same thing except replace the luxury buses with private characters from teterboro and the nyc with south beach. Miami has been as much of a bye week as Rutgers recently. Otis you are on to something here!

I still think Stanford/Cal/USC/UCLA/Washington/Oregon + Duke/UNC/Wake/Virginia/Ga. Tech/N.C. State would have been a fun conference.

Let Clemson and FSU walk for hundreds of millions. Let everyone else try to get into the Big 12 or reform Big East-ish football.
