Around College Basketball

And funnel extra money legally through NoBull and other legit businesses. I just can't see the football schools tolerating St. John's and Villanova having this much of an advantage over them for long.
I agree but I also do think there is only so much finite money available for these football programs, that no regulations can combat.

They roster so many more guys, so many more coaches, and the premium positions eat up almost entire basketball budgets inofitself. Ohio State had a 38 million dollar deficit in 2024 FY. That obviously won't stop them for investing in their athletic programs, but it is a big advantage that we don't have to even think about football.

They may have to combat this with private equity. But that is a long-term disaster waiting to happen.

Us being able to legally pay players, plus having that more corporate mindset, should really put us in an advantageous position for years to come -- as long as we make the correct hire after Pitino.

Fortunately this is an isolated incident that happened at second-tier schools. I am glad that this type of thing will NEVER be an issue with other, more prestigious universities… nor will it spread to other sports.

I am not sure if you are serious or not as this has happened multiple times in the past.

CCNY, Manhattan College, NYU, LIU, Kentucky, St. John’s in the early 50’s all of whom were big time programs.

St. John’s, Bradley, NYU, Connecticut and others in the late 50’s early 60’s Players accused (wrongly in several cases) including St. John’s Al Seiden, Tony Jackson, Connie Hawkins, Roger Brown, Jim Robinson (all basically banned from the NBA either in writing or blackballed). Others were convicted. NYU ended their athletic programs. This also indirectly affected UNC who fired Frank McGuire due to NCAA violations and their President planning to emphasize sports as “they were not going to become like those schools in New York”.

Boston College and Henry Hill (Goodfellas), late 70’s.

Tulane in the mid 80’s whereby Tulane eliminated their basketball program for several years.

2009 Toledo basketball and football.

With legalized betting and social media, this is a potential ticking time bomb. Even before this, programs including St. John’s would have law enforcement personnel come and talk to teams about the dangers of this.

Edit: originally I posted just the above video (for comedic effect). But to clarify, I am totally on board with the subsequent posts referencing my nonsense.

Unfortunately, it is only going to get worse. The NCAA is considering making it legal for athletes to bet on sports other than their own. What do they think is going to happen when an athlete loses money? He will try to get it back by any means necessary. These so called prop bets are the worse.

I know it is not a popular opinion, but I am against betting on college sports. As SJU85 pointed out, too many lives have been ruined. What is the purpose of college sports? Is it to cheer and support your favorite or to bet and win or lose money?

Betting on college sports is too big of an industry, IMO, for this to be outlawed. However, I do think the NCAA will put a rule in place where a NCAA athlete cannot bet on other sports beyond their own. I think professional football has this rule, or something like it.
