For those who think multi year NIL deals will cut down on transfers, here is part of an article from the Athletic

“The contract question​

Unlimited transferring, the ability of players to leave for another school after every season — even every semester — has been a sore point for several years. Schools thought they were getting a handle on it by signing players to multiyear contracts through their collectives, including deals that called for players to owe money if they left.

The problem here is Iamaleava did have a contract: This was supposed to be the final year of a four-year deal he signed with Tennessee before his senior year of high school. Iamaleava reportedly just wanted more money after, among other things, seeing what Carson Beck got from Miami to transfer this year (reportedly $4 million). Technically, it would seem Tennessee could hold him for breach of contract. But it appears the school was just ready to move on, let Iamaleava go and save the $2.2 million it would have owed him.

Perhaps this situation causes schools and collectives to bargain harder for language in their player contracts. But this shows that multiyear contracts aren’t a perfect solution. The NFL and pro sports have contract holdouts, but they’re fairly rare because players have less leverage: Their teams can trade them, or they can just not play. The players can’t leave for another team.”

I mean - and of course it’s terrific this current success - however seems most/much of our team will have only a single year of eligibility etc.
So much turnover. In the Apple. (pardon me) Apple turnovers. Hmmn.
Then what about 2026-27 season?

Baylor has to replace their whole roster this year. Every player from last year portaled! Insane future for NIL. Need guardrails.

The simple answer is yes. Coach said that St. John’s doesn’t do at home visits any more they go straight to the negotiating table. Months later he stated that he would not be recruiting HS players because you can’t win big with them.

(Ironically in one article they quote a NJ HS basketball coach that said ‘He’s right, just ask how Cal is doing with all his five star freshman’)

The result is our transfer portal win this year was Zuby as he is one of two players with Wilcher that will be with Pitino all three years. Eligibility wise it was 2 out of a possible 7. 14 out of 15 players that transfer into St. John’s under CRP have either ran out of eligibility or left via the portal.

None of this is necessarily a bad thing in terms of Wins and Losses. It made buying merch problematic if you like wearing jerseys. It’s just Rick’s way of operating. Shaka Smart likes to develop players and retain. Hurley recruits one and done players and spends exactly freely in the portal.

Now that’s just from the coaches’s and GM’s perspective. Add that to players who are looking for exit opportunities be it for more money or more playing time, you’ve got yourself the ingredients for turnover.

RP had to deal with this while coaching overseas. He knows the drill.
 
With how this trend is developing in this NIL/Transfer Portal world- is this essentially the future of college basketball. We are getting to the point that mid-majors are going to function as a minor-league system for "prove yourself time" outside of the top 20-top 50 HS kids each year and then only after you are thriving and can handle the "college experience" do you get your "big bucks" sophomore/junior or senior year at a big school? I am figuring that this is now trending to a game of "making good investments" and narrowing the pool with more selectivity.

I know we are capitalizing on it here, but at a macro-level it appears to me all these financial interests (NIL, cable money and virtual betting etc) have now eroded the core of amateur college ball to being a mini-pro world. I would argue that Rick Pitino has proven how even more skilled he is compared to some of the other greats now that he has adapted to this and stayed around for it. Its really a whole another world at this point unless the NCAA puts some breaks on some things.
