#11 Marquette (MSG), Tue., Feb. 4, 6:30p, FS-1

They only make the most blatant of calls. Off the ball it has to almost be comical to get a whistle. They let Clingan spread his feet 3-4 feet last year and start his "roll" just as the defender got to him which essentially amounts to the two WR crossing pick play in football. Just make a basketball move and 99% of the time it's okay. We'll see how much they like that when Maker does it next year.
It's worse this year. Samson Johnson throws hip checks and uses his arms to push off in addition to everything you mentioned. I've even seen the shooter (usually Ball) push off as well. So, in summary...if you are defending Ball, you will be pushed off on, hip checked, have to fight through a rolling screen and be able to challenge a shot without violating the shooters right to land without any contact whatsoever. No wonder the kid is shooting 46% from three.

Eric Dixon like Samson, almost every time he screens, it's a moving pick. Why the refs don't call it more is beyond me.

Shamorie was a great one for sure but wasn’t Justin Simon the point guard on that team? That was a team that certainly had enough talent to have a much better season then they did.

Shamories performance against Duke at the Garden was one of the best individual performances I’ve ever seen as a Johnny fan.
The former president of my HOA here in Raleigh is a big Duke fan. He's also a big time supporter of the Duke basketball team which earned him guaranteed tickets each year at Cameron. Most times when I bump into him and we talk St. John's/Duke basketball, he always mentions the game Bootsy Thornton had against Duke in1999. Although #2 Duke beat #8 St. John's in OT at MSG, Bootsy scored 40 points on 14 out of 24 from the field including 7 for 11 from 3 point range. He also had 12 rebounds. So according to at least one big time Duke supporter, Bootsy Thornton is legendary.

Johnson has some coordination issues too which doesn't help. I've seen that kid foul ugly 4-5 straight possessions with only 2 calls. Joplin of Marquette is much more coordinated as you'd expect from a 6'7 wing playing stretch 4.

I have stated this in the past on this site (and some had been appalled that I would say so, since it was a loss), but that was probably the greatest basketball game I have ever seem Was lucky to have been at the Garden for it. A huge disappointment but it was an amazing game and an amazing performance (maybe the best performance by a Johnny in a game ever).

Let me tell you a little baseball story. Macaroi plumbing vs Chisties jewelers. Packed crowd. We huddle at the mound and my dad said " remember the first time we got blown out ? Whoever thinks we are losing tonight step off the field. Whoever thnks they should pitch tonight other than mike lets go throw 5 minutes on the side and you decide "

" we chose to talk shit but to get our ass kicked our mistake by then but Jesus fucking god spare mercy on their asses for what we are about to do to them ' but no matter what when we do kick their asses we don't show it. You don't smile or point., At the end of the game we point to carvel and that was all

Seconded. I was there also; we were going at it pretty good all game with these Duke guys in front of us, when the game ended we hugged like long lost brothers. Total respect on both sides. And then we went down to Cameron Indoor the next season and got revenge.

Speaking of big wins against ranked teams, my all time favorite game I attended was the Hall of Fame game in 1982 as St. John's defeated Michael Jordan and North Carolina, 78-74, in overtime in the Tip-Off Classic in Springfield, Mass. Chris Mullin and Kevin Williams were named Co-MVPs.

Carolina was up 4 with a minute to go and Dean Smith went into his heralded 4 corner offense. With some heroics by Kevin Williams, the Johnnie’s tied it and won it in OT.

Were any of you posters there as well??

I remember that game well, but was not there.

Is there anyone on here unhappy about the season, attendance, publicity, road competence and ranking of this group? I initially thought we would be a top 4 or 5 BE team, so I’m playing w house $ now. Do I think we could be the Dance winner, no. Do I think this group could win a couple of Dance games, yes & who knows w right draw what would happen in the third game. Guess my point is after so much ineptitude for a ton of years, we should appreciate the accomplishments of the squad and staff even if we stumble a bit in the 5 game gauntlet v best BE teams we now face. Enjoy the ride and appreciate the rarity of it at SJU.
There is absolutely no reason why SJU can't win the Dance this year. I am well aware of the flaws which are dissected over hundreds of pages here every day. Poor shooting games can turn into rock fights. They have as good a chance as anyone out there, I really believe that. The most improbable teams routinely advance deep in the modern era, and this year's SJU team would not even be considered "improbable." No team wishes to play a Pitino team in any round of the tournament. The in effect 6 man rotation in '99 steamrolled everyone until running into the long arms of Ken Johnson in a game I was at and could have gone either way. Bring it.
