Providence (MSG), Sat., Feb. 1, 12 NOON, CBSSN

Thanks NC , I neglected to look up the stats on 3 point shooting percentages for any of the teams mentioned .
But , sometimes Stats are deceiving as we all know too well .
Is it better to shoot 10 -25 on 3 points or 5-10?

I think it’s the 30 points on 3’s Vs 15 on 3’s . That large a gap is hard to overcome , no matter how well you score the regular 2 point goal .

Up until yesterday , Rahim was in the high 20’s or low 30’s . He was on fire Saturday . We defended him poorly all game .

I think subjectively that I fear Marquette , UCONN and Creighton a lot more on the 3 pointers than PC but , I haven’t drilled down enough on the actual numbers .

Ball , Karaban on the Huskies , Jones, Joplin on Marquette , Ashworth on Creighton are scarier than Rahim .
Just my opinion .
Probably because Pukon, Marquette and Creighton are superior teams to PC, and they bring a lot more to the court than just 3 point shooting. That's certainly how I view it.

I completely disagree with the idea that our shooting and offense is what it is and won't get better. It's already gotten better, and we were missing Smith for half of January. He's shooting 39% from 3pt this year and a dynamic player in his own right. We also have Kadary playing up to his level compared to earlier in the year.

We also have a coach named Rick Pitino.

I'm not saying we will become a sharpshooting offensive team overnight, but why are we still saying things are static and won't get better?! I expect a leap. We really just have to be a 34% 3pt team against these top teams to be able to beat anyone. It's more than possible.
As is my tradition, I like to watch pre game warmups. Been doing it since was a kid. Team doesn’t make outside shots during warmups either. Prey and Ayo wete clearly best two pre game shooters. This team is not going improve much from the outside. Even if they win the Championship it won’t be because shooting dramatically improved.
Now as stated there are ways to improve the offense such as more looks down low for Zuby and riding Luis and Kadary when we are struggling.

The best way they can improve their outside making ability is to create better looks. I actually think they did a pretty good job yesterday and they shot 33%. That's basically what I would deem a big improvement compared to December, and is enough to beat good teams. It's an "impressive" number for us especially considering the two touted "shooters" we have went 1-10 yesterday. If we're doing that consistently, we're fine.

Was this your first, only?, live game this season?

Rahim may have given the best 3 point shooting we see all season. What we don't know is how the defense is set, who did the coaches determine was the primary threat. If he was considered the 3rd option not the primary or secondary then it is understandable why he got more looks and congrats to him for hitting them, it may never happen again. The coaches at some point should have4 changed up the scheme.

I also think the refs did have a bit to do with it. You can take a look at KC games ans see at times things get a bit tilted in their favor to help them get through. Maybe they wanted to keep it a closer game for ratings or someone out there does not like us, but it seemed like we were getting tikitak fouls then getting clobbered and no call,

All in all we had spotty offense in the 2nd half and still won. I would like to see prey come in and spell scott as he seems to be a calming factor, plays good defense, and passes well.

To your point on our 2nd half fouls . It seemed we got to 10 fouls in a blink of a eye .
I was astonished . Also pissed . As you were too .
Yes , Prey can do very well on spot duty on defense .
Pitinio often has him in there with Vince , which I don’t get but , Rick is the HOF Coach and I’m not.
Prey and Zuby at the same time for minutes , here and there is a better combo .

A little off topic but after the game yesterday at MSG I went bask to see the Lakers Vs Knick game and it was nice to see a SJU basketball alum Greg St Jean so involved with the Lakers. Glad he landed in an amazing spot.

Getting 19000 plus at msg was great. That is the atmosphere Rick is shooting for. Does anyone have an idea of how much money can St Johns can make with a crowd like this?

A couple of things that I felt may have impacted the Providence come back besides just getting hot.

We had a slow start offensively and Pitino substituted less than usual so maybe we tired out a little. We couldnt get that breakaway dunk when we got up 19 that would have sent the crowd into a frenzy.

I thought the timeout English called after Joseph tied it helped us. I get he wanted to set up his defense. We had no timeouts, out of sorts and deflated. It gave time to get the crowd jacked again and Pitino to tell his team to give the ball to Kadary and clear out.
