Providence (MSG), Sat., Feb. 1, 12 NOON, CBSSN

Weird season. During games watching us play makes me feel anxious. No matter how good our record is, I don’t think I have ever seen a team win this many games look as bad as we do on offense. Defensively we are as good as I have seen, but on offense we sometimes resemble the Norm teams. Then the game is over and you are like holy crap we are 19-3 10-1.

On defense, we remind me of those Houston teams of the last couple years. The problem with relying on D is it takes 5 guys totally committed to playing hard and paying attention for 40 minutes. The 5-10 mins that doesn’t happen is eventually going to hurt us against good offensive teams that can shoot.

Here is the thing, it has been 22 games. We are not going to shoot the ball better. Luis, Wilcher, Scott, Kadary are who they are. This is how they are going to shoot the ball. The % is not going to improve drastically. Smith is hurt so if he can get healthy he should improve but otherwise we are who we are.

I do feel to potentially get a little better offensively, you have to see what Glover or Lefty can do for you from the outside. Now that probably not gonna happen in next two games, but should before the BET.

I also feel there has to be a more concentrated effort to get Zuby looks down low. And finally for good or bad when we are in one of our ruts, you need to live or die with Luis and Kadary at end of games. Too often we will need a basket and guys other than those two or Zuby are shooting the ball.

One of many things struck me about this game . In the 2nd half we were picking up fouls like they were free bagels on a Sunday morning .
I think we had 10 fouls before the last 10-12 minutes of the game .
Either the Refs had felt sympathy for the Friars or , we just got careless on Defense .
I think we know all of the top 4/5 teams in the BE will shoot the 3 better than we will . That’s the facts . Which means we have to be fierce defending the 3 against Marquette , UCONN, Creighton in upcoming games.
All these teams shoot 3’s better than PC .
Marquette has Jones and UCONN has Ball . 2 lefties that can drain the 3 and also get to the rim .
Who gets the assignment to guard them ? In the games this week , we can’t give up 30 points on 3’s to either team and expect to Win .

It seemed to me that Diarra on the Huskies looks hurt . He was noticeably limping late in the game against Marquette and can be turned over with pressure .

On the other hand , we need 3-4 threes ourselves to narrow the gap to these other teams .
But , we shouldn’t be shooting 3’s just because we are being dared to do so . Zuby doesn’t get enough touches inside and that has to change .
We are going to need 20 or more from KR against both these teams this week .
He’s pulling up to take his lethal mid range jumper more , instead of trying to go all the way to the rim . He gets stripped a lot when he tries to go all the way .
We are very capable of beating these teams and , how well we defend will be the key .

Good post

Fwiw, thru first four BE games we were 9/58 from 3 = 15%

In our last 7 BE games we are 36/136 = 28%

Still very much below average, but much more doable. Get it to 31/32 and we are very tough.

Any one else find it odd that one paint and baseline was royal blue and the one end was black? 1 step at a time I guess!

According to Zach, CRP was not happy after the win. Apparently he gave it to them in the locker room afterward.
I would have posted the story but it wasn't available online. I read it in this morning's paper.

I completely disagree with the idea that our shooting and offense is what it is and won't get better. It's already gotten better, and we were missing Smith for half of January. He's shooting 39% from 3pt this year and a dynamic player in his own right. We also have Kadary playing up to his level compared to earlier in the year.

We also have a coach named Rick Pitino.

I'm not saying we will become a sharpshooting offensive team overnight, but why are we still saying things are static and won't get better?! I expect a leap. We really just have to be a 34% 3pt team against these top teams to be able to beat anyone. It's more than possible.

Agree with your post for the most part Sly but don't sell PC short on three point shooting. As a team they shoot it better than Marquette equal to Creighton; only UCONN has a better three point percentage as a team. Pitino referred to their good three point shooting in the post game.
presser.
Having said that we will need to be much better defending the three than we were in the second half yesterday if we want to win our next two games.
Go Johnnies!!

Haven't read much of this thread, so not sure if it was mentioned, but ESPN said we had 99.7% odds of winning with 7 minutes left! Knowing the Johnnies I still felt a bit nervous at that point, but fortunately this team can make the final shot. Hopefully Pitino's words yesterday can prevent another collapse though lol.
The funny thing is that I was not nervous at any point during the game. Not when we were scuffling in the first half, not when Providence made its run, not even when they tied it. I never felt that we weren't going to win the game.

With 7 on the shot click the guy next to me said "what is he doing???" I just gave him the palms-down "relax" sign and when Kadary hit the jumper answered him: "winning the game.".

It's been 25 years since I felt like SJU was going to win a game despite things going wrong. More often it has been feeling like they would find a way to lose despite things going right.

The consistency of the defense and veteran toughness may get overcome by a better team, but Providence was not gonna be that team.

Thanks NC , I neglected to look up the stats on 3 point shooting percentages for any of the teams mentioned .
But , sometimes Stats are deceiving as we all know too well .
Is it better to shoot 10 -25 on 3 points or 5-10?

I think it’s the 30 points on 3’s Vs 15 on 3’s . That large a gap is hard to overcome , no matter how well you score the regular 2 point goal .

Up until yesterday , Rahim was in the high 20’s or low 30’s . He was on fire Saturday . We defended him poorly all game .

I think subjectively that I fear Marquette , UCONN and Creighton a lot more on the 3 pointers than PC but , I haven’t drilled down enough on the actual numbers .

Ball , Karaban on the Huskies , Jones, Joplin on Marquette , Ashworth on Creighton are scarier than Rahim .
Just my opinion .

Want to hear something really unbelievable- as a Freshman in 1959-60 I believe I paid $15 a credit. Then again it might have been $19 a credit.
Freshmen in 1971 St. John's Staten Island campus, each semester was roughly $2,000 +/- for a total of $4,000 +/- tuition only -- of course commuted so no room and board.

Rahim may have given the best 3 point shooting we see all season. What we don't know is how the defense is set, who did the coaches determine was the primary threat. If he was considered the 3rd option not the primary or secondary then it is understandable why he got more looks and congrats to him for hitting them, it may never happen again. The coaches at some point should have4 changed up the scheme.

I also think the refs did have a bit to do with it. You can take a look at KC games ans see at times things get a bit tilted in their favor to help them get through. Maybe they wanted to keep it a closer game for ratings or someone out there does not like us, but it seemed like we were getting tikitak fouls then getting clobbered and no call,

All in all we had spotty offense in the 2nd half and still won. I would like to see prey come in and spell scott as he seems to be a calming factor, plays good defense, and passes well.
