Yankees 2024/25 Offseason Hot Stove Talk

Definitely sign Soto.

Dump Trivino, Holmes, Rizzo, Torres, and Verdugo.

Sign RHP Jeff Hoffman, he'd be huge in the bullpen, and sign Bregman to replace Torres.

Please don't sign Bregman, or any of the Cheatstros!

Sign Soto. Let Verdugo go amd bring up the Martian.

Let Rizzo go and get literally any other left hand hitting first baseman.

Move Jazz to second for Torres, and if you're trying to save $, let Cabrera play one of the corners all season. Plus, we are still stuck with DJ so let him play the other spot, if you can't talk him into retiring

Lol I wish he'd retire, he's useless, but why would he retire when he's due millions more?

Rizzo played well in the postseason, if they can get him back for cheap after declining his option I wouldn’t be against it. Only on a one year deal though, they have a guy in AA Rafael Flores who looks like a legit power hitter at 1B. He’s 23 so he should start next year in AAA and if he hits there I see no reason he shouldn’t get a call up at some point.

Dominguez will be in LF for sure and I say leave Jazz at 3B and give him an entire offseason to work there. He was average defensively at 2B anyway and looked fine playing 3B. Torres can hit but his defense is horrific let him walk, they won’t be able to afford him anyway he’ll get paid. They need to DFA DJ he’s cooked and offers nothing anymore. Yankees have a bunch of guys ready to compete at 2B with Cabrera, Berti, Peraza, Vivas, and Durbin. Let those guys battle it out and pick the best one.

My initial thoughts:

Cashman and Boone are not going anywhere so they are not part of this (whether I agree with that or not might be a different story).

Torres (FA), Rizzo ( FA by not picking up his option), DJ (DFA), Verdugo (FA), Holmes (FA). leave team

Soto, Burnes (we need someone reliable behind Cole who can be an Ace. Rodon is not it and Gil might be in the future, he is not there now) and bullpen help (less expensive than what Holmes is probably going to get) from Free Agency.

Leave Chisolm at third, let’s see what the Martian can do in the OF. Trade for a decent stick for 1B and let Bert, Cabrera, Peralta, Vivas, and Durbin battle for 2B.

Revamp your Spring Training regimen to emphasize fundamentals and game situations not “just getting your work in” while recreating what is done during a regular season game in your exhibitions (no matter who is playing and how many innings) to create muscle and brain memory so you are more “situationally aware”.

I totally expect the Soto saga to drag out which could impact some moves. As we get further away from this season, I will probably have some more thoughts that may revise my thoughts and might have some more names.

I disagree regarding Rizzo in the post season. His defense was horrible. Ground balls getting by him. Tim Hill's toss going between his legs. Not charging and getting to the bag before Mookie. Not getting to the middle of the field on throw that short hopped and got away from Torres. I've seen enough. He's old, has no power left in his bat and no longer plays good defense.

Remake starts with replacing Boone. Mattingly's got the creds and the connection.
Let Soto go elsewhere; because of cost. Keep DJ for the same reason, playing 2nd.
Torres should leave via FA.
Trade Jazz or put him in CF, with Judge returning to RF.
Extend Rizzo 1 year.
Get a backup catcher to Wells and a competent 3b.

Just hot-stoving, but what if Soto doesn’t return (God help us). Any alternatives?

Played well against the Guardians and I thought his at-bats were competitive against the Dodgers, constantly battling to 3-2 counts and drawing a walk in each game except one. Remember he only had 3 good fingers on one hand. That was on Cole not covering first that’s a routine play for pitchers. Torres is a bonehead and well below average defensively, why go for the backhand catch there. It wasn’t the first time he just sits there staring at the ball after an error, he cost them game 1 with that play imo. Rizzo should be cheap I don’t want them to spend money at 1B, allocate that towards keeping Soto.

Mattingly would be different but would’ve be better?

Of the Yankees don’t resign Soto, do you really think they would use the savings to strengthen other areas? Where would the replacements come from? It creates another whole.

DJ is done. We’ve been waiting over two years. He is shot and is not coming back at his age.

Jazz is not going anywhere except 2nd or maybe the OF if Soto leaves. He gets a whole offseason to figure things out and get spring training at 3rd under his belt and actually seems to realize what he needs to do on the bases.

Rizzo has slowed down on both sides of the ball. I love him but I would not pick up his option and look to the trade for someone or kick the tires and check in on Christian Walker (No to Pete Alonso).

Trevino is a more than qualified back-up to Wells however if Narvaez is ready, trading Trevino and saving some cash (every little bit helps) would not be a bad idea.

Agree on Narvaez he’s ready to be the backup, I wonder if they’d give Rice a shot, his bat plays better at catcher than 1B imo.
