Transfer Portal Mania

That deranged Georgetown Hilltop Hoops blog article had us connected to him in February. I don't know if we actually are though. He had good #s against high majors last year, AAU is Long Island Lightening.

Figured I'd just post it here instead of targets for now.

Who could have predicted that “NIL” which intended for autographs, ads, video games, jerseys, etc. would become free agency with bidding wars & inflation (having to pay what it takes & not what they’re worth)?

If you sense sarcasm, you’d be correct. I remember proponents saying we need to allow this or players will “starve” even though that’s ridiculous & says nothing of all the obvious $$$ they got under table not to mention the free $300k BA & MA (if they went for grad). Everything was so rushed with no guardrails in place. This is the result. And I’ve heard many fans saying it’s making them start to care less already & will likely hurt fan interest in longterm. Can’t say I disagree.

Shoutout to Mark Emmert. He effectively ruined college sports in a multitude of ways and then left without a care in the world.

I was surprised how many SJ fans were fine with unregulated free agency. As we all know, we simply cannot compete with the big football schools. And this is with Pitino & Repole. When Pitino retires and by the way he’s clearly getting sick of “NIL” like Jay Wright, what is the plan? The worst mistake ever was allowing open bidding wars with zero regulation. Ohio St, Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, etc. must be laughing. I know a fan of a B1G team who was a big donor & stopped donating & paying attention because he said he didn’t even know the players anymore & every yr there’s a new team.

Not sure how anyone with their eyes open expected anything else out of the NIL “movement”. Applying or even worse, expecting, common sense applied to a situation controlled by greedy organizations that preyed on young athletes for decades seems to me to be, well, inexplicable fantasy.

Well, since we did so well pre-NIL, I am Ok seeing how this plays out. I imagine it will be regulated at some point.

What we are witnessing is the end of college sports. This is now “Pro” sports without rules. I expect sooner or later Congress or someone will step in and a mess will become a bigger mess. I mean are we even pretending that these kids are being “educated”? Lots of questions so few answers.
