Your Hopes/Expectations for 2020-21

Imagining a normal season...

I'd say 19-22 wins, right on the bubble for the NCAA tournament and set up for a breakout season in 21-22 assuming the core guys are still here and healthy.

Here are my takes on Adam's hopes/expectations:
1. Hope: the season is actually played (without severely compromising the health of players/fans/coaches)
Expectation: 30% likely that we are able to play a full season, probably 50% that we can at least play BE season

2. Hope: we reach the NCAA Tournament (assuming of course that the season is actually played)
Expectation: 50% likely. I think we finish in middle of BE and become 5th or 6th team in.

3. Hope: we pick up a 4 star recruit (or two) for 2021 (preferably by October)
Expectation: 60% likely that a 2021 recruit we sign winds up being rated 4 stars by at least one respected ranking service.

4. Hope: the Big East has another solid year (5+ Tournament teams) as is ranked at least #4/5 in the conference rankings
Expectation: Agree, 85% or higher likely.
The 2020-21 season has more question marks than perhaps any other in history. For me there are 4 big questions. In order of importance:

1. Hope: the season is actually played (without severely compromising the health of players/fans/coaches)
Expectation: 45% likely. Unfortunately I don't think the season will be played this year. I certainly expect conferences to attempt to play, maybe even by pushing the start of the season back or limiting fans, but I don't think it'll go as planned. I think the season will get cancelled by late November as more and more schools back out, move their Spring semesters to online, and we enter flu season. Pro sports will most likely successfully return (even with all the issues we're seeing in MLB now), but college sports are very different in that they'll need to take place on campuses and the athletes are unpaid students. That said, I'm sure the NCAA will try REALLY hard for the season to go on as planned, and the majority of athletes may want to compete if enough measures are in place. America is clearly getting impatient.

2. Hope: we reach the NCAA Tournament (assuming of course that the season is actually played)
Expectation: 40% likely. I would have put these odds at around 55% if LJ returned. At this point I'm thinking NIT. A lot will depend on the newcomers outperforming their recruiting rankings (which I actually think is likely to happen), but even that may not be enough to put us over the top. We still finished in 9th place despite a very good last couple weeks. I'm a generally optimistic fan, but the reality is very few bracketologists (if any) will have us in the Tournament pre-season. We as fans like to think we're smarter than the algorithms, but how many times during the past couple decades have we actually outperformed expectations? If we do make the Tournament then that'd be a surprise, but obviously a very pleasant one. That might even cause this board to unify for once!

3. Hope: we pick up a 4 star recruit (or two) for 2021 (preferably by October)
Expectation: 30% likely. Julian Champagnie was obviously an excellent under the radar pick up and nobody is denying that. In hindsight the vast majority of universities would have picked him up. If players like Cole and Posh outperform their 3 star rankings and play like 4 stars too then that'd be awesome. That said, I don't think continuously finding diamonds in the rough is a realistic long-term plan and I doubt the staff thinks that either, which is why they've been hard at work offering a bunch of 4/5 star recruits. Keep in mind, CMA did get a LOT of 4 stars at Arkansas but he still needs to prove that at St. John's. The effort is there but at a point I'd like to see the staff sign a top recruit. Historically speaking 90% of top recruits sign by October of the previous year, so ideally I'd like to see us get someone before the season starts. If not? No need to panic, just need to hope our 2020 class pans out the same way that Julian did (which wouldn't shock me). Overall I am not optimistic we will get a 4 star in 2021 as we don't seem to be at the top of any top recruit's list, at least not publicly.

4. Hope: the Big East has another solid year (5+ Tournament teams) as is ranked at least #4/5 in the conference rankings
Expectation: 85% likely. Conferences have down years all the time. This year the ACC wasn't very good while last year the Big Ten (and Big East) weren't very good. I don't expect us to be #1 in the NET but that's not necessary. As long as we aren't hindered by our schedule and can make the Tournament with a top 6/7 finish, then great. We did lose a LOT of players this year and we'll likely drop, but we have enough returning (plus UConn) to have a respectable year. Also would be great to see our TV deal reworked/extended with more money per school.

This topic may lead to a lot of debates but that's not really the intention, it's more to give thoughts BEFORE anything actually happens, and then those expectations can be revisited later this year and next year. Personally I hope my expectations for 1-3 are wrong, especially #1, otherwise we might never be able to revisit most of these predictions until 2021 (or 2022...?).

I'm sure everyone has different hopes/expectations, so what do you all think?
One important point to mention. Big East was #1 in RPI rankings this past year. No reason that can't continue again next year.

Certainly possible and I'd love for that to happen, but I'm not being greedy. Also, we got pummeled for 3 straight years in the Big East after having strong OOCs, so a very strong Big East isn't necessarily a good thing for us. As long as the Big East isn't "bad" and on par with other Power conferences (5+ bids) then I'm happy.

11 teams now
Then we go 11-9. No problem.
I’ll go with 9-11 because they still have a lot to prove on the road, winning once away last season in BE.

I'm guessing the full season is a long shot and a Big East schedule a coin toss. Hope the heck I'm wrong!
If played, I see us 9 - 11 regular season , and then 'surprise' in the BET.
Let's hope we play.

I don't want to get too oddly specific with my prediction, so I'll simply say we'll be 11th in the nation in PPG.

We can extrapolate a bit, since CMA's teams are known for creating turnovers. Being 11th in Nation in PPG would likely mean many of those T/O's convert into points. Hope you're right, L J S A.

My hopes are that we have a season, avoid playing Wednesday night in the BET (remember that is tougher now with UConn in mix, you have to finish top 5), and also make the Friday night semifinal for the first time in my lifetime.

Also my bonus hope is that we see a breakout season from Greg Williams. I see the talent and athleticism and I think he finally puts it all together
Funny because I think we were headed to a Friday night appearance this year. I think we were going to beat Creighton. Would have been a fun Friday night with the likely matchups of us against Providence and Hall against Nova.
That game was in the bag. Creighton wanted no part of us and the Duke was taking over again.

Who knows how far we could have went. The team was on fire.
It’s been so long. I keep forgetting that 3 point halftime leads are insurmountable

Lol, pretty sure Creighton led for nearly all of the half, too. Still nice that we were able to pull ahead at halftime as that has made us all a lot more optimistic. It was arguably the best ending since our last NIT title during the early 2000's (which was vacated, anyways).

With all that has been going on in the world since March, this past season seems like it ended a long time ago. Interesting to see how CMA weaves in the 5 newcomers. Five that each play a different position. That really helps. Last season. CMA made a very new team playing a very new system really mesh. Both coach, staff and team deserve a lot of praise.

Starting 5 of Dunn, Williams Cole, Penny and, if healthy, Roberts will be fun to watch. A healthy Williams can be a serious threat. I have no idea what Posh and Wusu will bring overall, but I know they will play hard and hustle. I don't expect a ton of 3s from either. Toro should be a welcome addition. A big banger has been missing for years. Moore I have no clue. Some real good coaches around the league. They will be better prepared to deal with CMA's style. I expect Cole to replace Figgy with little to no drop-off, Williams to have a breakout season, and Earl continuing to play hard and play well.

A couple under 500 in the Big East, with some signature wins and dancing in the post-season.

Good old moose. Always here to bring that jaded perspective he carries like a badge of honor.

If being a realist is a bad thing then I’ll wear that badge proudly.

Then again maybe you are just trolling and in that case well I don’t know.

Thanks for posting that Mike Z. Just about where I have Johnnies if full season plays out (5th or 6th in my case ahead of Xavier). Interesting that they have teams playing 33 regular season games rather than 31 with new 11 team BE. I would have thought there'd be one or two less OOC games.

If you look at the national rankings in that grid, St John's is only 2 spots behind Seton Hall and only 4 spots behind Xavier. It's not unrealistic to root for a first division finish

It's interesting to note how much high octane offense correlates with projected standings. The top tier Big East teams have great offenses and can score at a high clip. One of my concerns under the CMA 40 minutes of hell system was, will we have enough offense? It seems most of the offense in that system comes from fast break points off turnovers. So if we are not forcing tons of turnovers every game it will be tough to score. Let's hope Cole, Posh, Dunn, Champ, etc. can shoulder the weight scoring. Next year I expect Posh to help slash with Dunn since Dunn was really the only one doing it last year.

I was/am looking forward to year 2 of CMA's up tempo offense/defense. We will be returning players who have bought into the system and will be prepared to play in it. The "new" players understand what they are getting into as they have been recruited by THIS staff based on the fact that they believe they will fit in. We will be a deeper team in 20/21 and this will benefit us, particularly if the season is "compacted" with more games played in a shorter time frame which will benefit a deep team.
I expect we will be peaking as the season winds down and be a tournament team.

Agreed. Really only 2 players did not buy in, LJ and Steere. i believe the rest really loved playing Anderson's style of basketball. And yes, the incoming kids know exactly what is going to be expected of them.
