Yakwe Funk

Yawke chose us when we were in the complete toilet. Kid could of went somewhere else (most kids would off) . I don't remember him dogging it last year when we getting our doors blown off. He continued to compete. Sure he has his limitations. But he can block shots, can't argue that. But he seems to like St. John's and represents us well.

He played his butt off last year, out of position, didn't whine or bitch, just played hard as he could for us. By all accounts a greate teammate and representative of the university.

If he's forced to do too much, that's a reflection of the state of the program.

He is ~10 games into his sophomore year. And he averaged 7 ppg as a freshman. In what world does anyone do that and crap on the player? And year two he gets crapped on? Really??

Yawke was one kid on a crappy team last year that I could root for. He was better than expected the first half of last season , but wore down because he played out of position and had too much PT. He was a FRESHMEN. His progress, and that of SJU basketball, will improve as time goes by. He will develop into a good component with proper usage and good coaching.

How about some good words for our kids instead of degrading their efforts and abilities? For a guy who is foreign, a freshman, and never played center he did pretty well last season. He's an asset on this team, and by all accounts a good kid who represents us well on and off the court. So it's a bit puzzling that he's getting trashed. Kind of pathetic. He is a great kid who does not deserve this crap.

This anti-Mali crap has to stop. The kid came here and has been loyal to us, the least we could do is return his loyalty.

Clever.
But I think with Yakwe most are just really surprised at how poorly he has played. That surprise has led to frustration than eventually anger. I do not think it is the double standard thing. It does exist but I don't think it is in play here.Personally I think people got carried away with expectations, but honestly he has been a disaster. The hands thing is the most baffling thing to me.

People expected Yawke to make the biggest leap out of any of the returning players based on his performance last season. Plenty of time for him to turn it around.

I'm surprised as well, I thought he'd be a stud. Even if he never developed an offensive game he had the athleticism to do what Willie Glass did. Lock down on defense and rebound and get garbage points. That he has not done which is the most puzzling thing of all, because that's just effort. You can't fault a kid who's been playing basketball for five years for having a suspect handle but you can question his interest and commitment if he looks like he's dogging it. Just because you're 6'7" and black doesn't mean you have to like basketball.

But there is a double standard, if there weren't there'd be six pages of posts saying what a great guy he is and another six pages saying how dare you. The fact is that there are legitimate reasons to criticize Yawke just as there are Missini. The double standard is in the reaction to to the critic and the criticism, not the substance of the criticism itself.

Best use of plagiarism I've seen.

Nonsense: Doris Kearns Goodwin won a Pulitzer. I don't see any awards in my future.

I thought Fun won Curmudgeon of the Year so often they named the award after him?

Jimmy Kimmel - "...and this years FUN Award for Sarcasm and Grouching goes once again to Dr. Fun. Come on up Dr. Fun to receive the FUN Award. How was your year?"

Fun - "Get off the stage you blathering fool. Your show sucks. You are an untalented hack, you could not tie Ed Sullivan's shoes. Look at this audience, what a bunch of ugly losers..."

Jimmy Kimmel - "Thank you Dr. Fun. Keep posting and we will see you next year!"

I think most on here liked Yakwe which has spared him until recently. If you look at it stat wise Mussini has played better than him this year and really took until recently for Yakwe to start to take some hits.

I agree I thought Willie Glass was the ground floor for him. I tried to temper my expectations but I def thought he could be Jerome Lane by his Senior year.
I not sure what is going on and I think people who try to dissect a guy's every facial expression are crazy, but he does look unhappy.

Actually if we could fuse the best parts of Yakwe and Mussini together into some kind of basketball playing Frankenstein, the kid could dominate.

It would work with Mussini and Ellison a little better I think

I don't think anyone on here is knocking Yakwe personally, and I don't think he has done anything except be a solid citizen here.

However, I also have not heard of any really nice things he has done and if I had I'd write them here. It's not a knock on him - he could very well be the nicest kid in the program, but I haven't heard anything. Is not writing a positive about a kid suddenly a negative, or do we have to give trophies in gratuitous nature?

It's very clear he is in a funk, and when Mussini was in a bad funk in the second half of last season a lot of people doubted his ability to compete at this level and continue to do so. Big difference is that while no one can explain Yakwe's funk, I was made aware that he had lost a lot of weight start to finish and the AD was trying very hard to keep the weight on him. It's reasonable to question whether he is prepared to do well at this level, and I'd be surprised if self-doubt isn't part of his problem right now.

I think his real problem is that he's a three without the skills of a three. He's the same size as Malik Sealy. If Malik Sealy played center we probably wouldn't remember his name.

He looks to me like he's thinking rather than reacting. They throw him the ball and rather than catching it he's thinking about where his feet should be and what he's going to do once he catches it and ten other things. If he's unhappy hopefully it's because he's frustrated and he works to overcome his frustration. Because he has physical gifts and you can't teach that.

I guess you can't start Owens because he would foul out by first TV Timeout. Maybe start Williams and have Yakwe come off bench as energy guy with Owens. Would also give him a little mental break to start the game.

I do think that the expectations were unfair and unrealistic, I thought that going back to last year. He showed some flashes last year that he could become a very good player, but nothing close to consistent. Both Lane and Glass came to college with far more skills than Yakwe. Jerome was undersized, but strong as a bull and had an uncanny instincts around the basket. As for his facial expressions and body language, maybe he looks unhappy because of he's not happy with his play and the resulting reduction in PT. Maybe he'll stick around and work harder. Maybe Lovett looks happy because he's an upbeat kid. Maybe he'll still leave at the end of the year. We all tend to try and determine what's going on with these kids, as you said, when in fact myriad things could be going on that we have no clue about. Think we need to get a board member who's one of those facial expression/body language readers. Sta

Said I don't put much stock into a player's body language. We used to have threads devoted to Harrison's eyebrows. His demeanor to me looks different from last year. IMO. I do not know what that means other than to me it was noticeable.

As far as Lane and Glass. Glass came here with the same skill level he left with unfortunately. He jumped really high. Glass was one of my favorites but he was limited as well. And you can say he also played out of position because supposedly he measured out at 6-3 w/o sneakers.
I thought Lane was a good comparison because around same height and if you look at Lane's frosh season stats they are eerily similar to Yakwe.

If I'm not mistaken, Glass was a third round pick of the Lakers. He had a medium range game and one tough ballplayer. In the end a little undersized to play an NBA forward, but the main limiting factor was not enough range on his jumper or overall basketball skills to be an NBA player at his size. He was a very good college player for us though

That was when height thing came out. Pete Vescey mentioned it in Hoop Du Jour and also that Pat Riley made some disparaging comments about his basketball IQ.
Big Glass fan. Dunked on Ralph Dalton's head and trashed talked the whole Gtown bench afterwards. When we beat Reggie Miller and UCLA he shut Miller down and trash talked him the whole game. Those two stand out becuase I happened to be at those games and had good seats as a kid and he was usually pretty quiet. Also best in game ST John's dunker I ever saw.

If Owens could avoid what seems like 2 fouls a game near the mid-court line, he will be that more effective down low.

Agree with Monte on this years expectations for KY. We have more offensive and defensive sets this year, and someone with a limited BB IQ will struggle with that. Last year he had more opportunity to shine with less structure. Now, picks are set, and he's expected to roll, catch, and convert. With development of Owens and Williams, and new faces next year, it's a logical concern (for him) of what his minutes will look like moving forward.

Glass was a very good defender in college.
