@Xavier, Wed., Jan. 31, 6:30p, FS-1

This game is huge. I'd argue that this game, @Butler, and Seton Hall are our biggest games remaining since they are basically 50/50 games. Creighton, Uconn, and @ Marquette are unlikely wins and we truthfully don't need them if we beat SH and one of Butler and Xavier on the road.

That is, of course, assuming we win 3/4 against Georgetown and DePaul. With Pitino, I have faith we take care of the lesser teams. I don't know if we have the talent to beat the top 3, but even last year's squad beat Uconn on the road. We'd have to be on, they'd have to be off, and a lot of things would have to go our way.
I agree that beating UCONN, with Clingan and an improved Castle, is going to be a tall order. However, imho, we've already shown we are very capable of beating either Creighton or Marquette; of course no saying we will but I like our chances of taking one of those two.

Xavier game is huge; if we are able to steal that one on the road, the path to 12-8 becomes very achievable

I would love to be wrong, but I don't think we have the firepower to beat top teams. Staying close doesn't mean much...it's like playing your little cousin and knowing you can just pull it out at any time.

We've got a coupe of wild cards. Pitino and the offensive rebounding are obviously the biggest. There is also Soriano on offense and Alleyne on defense.

No, they weren't and a lot of fans felt that they could not compete in the Big East and should return to the Yankee conference and the traditional rivalries.
Dom Perno years, Uconn=doormat of the BE. Can't wait for those days to return. I hope it is soon.

Boy, did Calhoun turn that around. I know everyone on here hates the guy and he can be a real piece of work, but he sure could coach. Way better than Boeheim, Roy Williams, Tom Izzo and others who are so highly regarded.

This is exactly right. In conference (and largely overall) we have beaten the teams we should beat, lost to the teams we should lose to, and have consistently been right there. There's nothing wrong with that - for the past 10 years we have underperformed my expectations by 2-3 games every year. So meeting expectations with a team in the 4-6 range of the BE is just fine.

They've had chances to raise the bar of expectations a bit at UConn, at Creighton, home for Marquette and came up short each time. We won't talk about at Seton Hall.

Just beat the Hall at home, beat Creighton, play tough at Marquette and on the road at X and Butler, and don't do anything stupid at DePaul or Georgetown and they will be fine.

Did UConn even have fans back then? Assume it was in the Dom Perno era which was pretty miserable for them most of the time.
Not all of it. I remember when they had a starting lineup of Karl Hobbs, Vern Giscomb, Mike McKay , Corny Thompson and Chuck Aleksinas at center. I think it was late 70’s early 80’s but those guys weren’t bad.

Their fans are unbearable and I give them credit they’ve gone on amazing runs. 5 titles in 6 appearances and loved the Sparty fans keeping them up the night before of 08 Semi in Detroit. I live CT some of biggest front runners. Bars In Stamford 20 yrs ago never cared about the Huskies or Pats.

I have a problem wirh people calling them unlikely wins. Lets take a look at each of the first game vs. those school.

@ UConn - I believe we had the lead in the 2nd when little cry baby Hurley started whining and pouting whaaaawhaaaawhaaaa. Then what happens? Every freaking boby watching knows what happened. That game pisses me off the most this year. I believe if the refs were fair, we won at uconn.

@ Creighton - Again we had a good lead. I won't even complain about the whole 2nd half, but will at the end of the game, the no fouls. If they were called we probably win.

Vs. Marquette - Again another freaking lead, then after halftime we stopped playing def then before you knew it, we were down alot. Then we start playing def again the last 6 minutes of that game.

We could of won all 3 of those.

I'd call them 50/50 games also.

Vegas will disagree. Best shot seems Creighton down here who you can get physical with.

Just to pass the time, another Pukon obnoxious fans story. I was at a BE tournament game between Pukon and Nova back in the 90's sometime and those disgusting Pukon fans wouldn't sit down until their team scored. I told them to sit the F down and they said that it was their tradition on their home court. I told them that this wasn't their home court and that they were were being extremely rude to other fans who wanted to see the game. They finally sat but we went back and forth the whole game. They thought that I was a Nova fan but I was wearing Redmen gear. I was there with my Nova friend. They're the dumbest fans in the country.

Long time SJU fans on this site know about my other escapades going to Storrs and the Hartford Civic Center and having incidents with them. I hate Pukon and their fans. They are the most obnoxious fans in the country. Now they have the most obnoxious coach in the country.

If they play that same smothering defense like we did vs. Villanova, we'll have a chance. If not then no chance.

That's why I'm very interested to see how we play defense at X, if we have back to back games of that def then my confidence will be sky high.

Only teams I put above us are UCONN and MQ…I thin we’re better than Creighton

I would phrase that somewhat differently. I don't think we have that closer who can control the game the last few minutes. RP is a magician if he can develop either Luis or Dingle . Both can get to the rime and pull up!
