Xavier, Wed., Dec. 20, 7p, FS1

I believe Rick knows Jenkins is not a pure point guard but , has asked him to be one this season . That’s a tremendous amount of trust and respect between a player and his Coach .

Jenkins is going to play Pro ball somewhere next year and Pitino will help him .

It’s just amusing to me all the Heat at Jenkins this year , knowing that Pitino will never criticize Daniss nor , listen to any of the adverse comments passed in here .

By the way, without looking it up , remember all the flak and criticism directed toward Posh last year ? Now that he’s at Butler , he’s being lauded here as John Stockton the 2nd . And , how foolish for RP to not retain Posh .

Posh choose , of his own will , to opt out of our Program . That’s the bottom line .

Jenkins is here , Posh is not ..
Posh was a tough gritty kid, but Jenkins is better. Posh could not shoot, full stop.

Just watching the game again and the two things you notice right away is that Alleyne will be more important than I first thought and surprisingly Traore will continue to have minutes. I think Pitino is trying to get more defense and Traore does some little things that he likes.

The live look ins to Pitino’s huddle are must see TV. He is a no bullshit Coach despite the public persona. I like it. No I love it.
Pitino develops players. Traore will be one of those guys. I think by the end of the season he will be a solid 10 minute player for us.

You are right that Jenkins is what we have and lamenting that Posh is no longer here is not helpful. I'm guilty of that! But I do not think it is fair to say that Posh "chose to opt out of our program." No one has any proof on how that went down and some reliable sources on this board say he in fact wanted to stay.

I am a big fan of Jenkins. Long, athletic, good defender. He is definitely a combo guard, but we are fine with a 3-guard combo of him, Alleyne and Dingle. His shot has been off, but he shot 36% from 3 at Iona. It will start falling. I think that's true for a lot of these guys. I'm surprised Wilcher only got 2 minutes. Ejiofor only 5 minutes.

On another note, it looks like Traore put on 25 pounds. He is a load down low.

Which is weird that Pitino asking/telling/ignoring him trying to do things in the BE that he didn’t do at Iona.

Well I never watched him at Iona so I assumed it was pretty much the same there, but from what I've read here it seemed that Clayton and he had a lot more shared responsibilities so maybe he liked his moments off the ball more than on in that structure.

Jenkins is a wing that can pass. We don’t have a single pure PG on the roster. When he starts playing like he understands this, the hate will stop.

Alleyne is clearly not a PG but he shares the ball literally every single possession. Dingle is a much better scorer than Jenkins, so I strongly prefer him taking 15 shots a game. While he’s not as good of a passer as Jenkins, he shared the ball a lot more.

Jenkins can’t help himself. He took 10 shots in just 22 minutes yesterday. Soriano took just 13 in 35 minutes and was playing out of his mind as usual.
Taking a look at the tape today:

1st possession: Team runs offense, everyone gets a touch, Jenkins curls off Joel screen and hits a midrange
2nd possession: Team runs offense, everyone gets a touch, Taylor misses shot, Jenkins secures offensive rebound and hits a 3
3rd possession: Jenkins swings ball to open Taylor in corner. Taylor makes, Jenkins assist.
4th possession: Soriano post up, turn around midrange misses
5th possession: Team runs offense, everyone touches ball, Alleyne doubled, pass leads to Ledlum 3. Air ball. Alleyne misses quick inbound shot.
6th possession: Team runs usual weave, but Jenkins back doors his man, Alleyne finds him. Jenkins scores
7th possession: Jenkins brings ball up, entry pass to Ledlum. Ledlum misses close shot. Joel grabs ORB and scores.
8th possession: Team runs weave, Jenkins passes to Ledlum who drives and is fouled
9th possession: Jenkins to Ledlum, then ledlum misplaces entry pass to Joel, turnover
10th possession: Inbound to Ledlum he drives and scores
11th possession: Jenkins misses midrange curling off Ledlum screen
12th possession: Jenkins runs baseline, comes off a screen, and misses a wide open three
13th possession: Ledlum to Taylor, to Zuby, misses shot, but fouled

JENKINS CHECKS OUT its 17-10 ST Johns

Jenkins didn't take a bad shot in this entire stretch. Everything was within the offense except for maybe the midrange on the 11th possession. Honestly, if Jenkins can continue to put up shifts like the one above, I have no problems with him. In this opening stretch of the game, everyone was touching the ball, everyone got good looks. Jenkins is capable of running this offense successfully and has shown that. He just needs to stay focused. When he plays outside of the offense is when it can get bad
Jenkins took (and made to be fair) 3 of the first 5 shots of the game after entering shooting 38% from the field and 27% from 3. That’s crazy to me. We are 3-0 when Jenkins plays between 16-23 minutes.

As you can see above, 2 of Jenkins makes were not a part of our game plan, but him making things happen and generating offense (3pter off of offensive rebound, backdoor cut leading to layup). Credit where its due. He came out and helped set the tone for us by creating offense with hustle and ingenuity.

I started watching at the 11th possession. ;)

PS he looked off balance, despite being wide open, on that possession and at no point did he ever look at his other teammates to see if there were other opportunities. I guess what I'm trying to say is that he's not looking to run the offense first sometimes. But I still like him enough.

Just to be clear I don’t want Jenkins whacked or want him traded for Posh or anything. Marillac and I differ there. Also would rather guys play overconfident than play scared.
With Jenkins, Ledlum and too a lesser degree Wusu, just felt that if they just adjusted their game a little they would be a lot better.
Seems lot easier for Jenkins to try to get others, specifically our best player the ball more than say for Posh to learn how to shoot.

Latest Comments From Zach:

Some thoughts on a really nice start to the Big East season with a one-sided win over Xavier:

- This team has just looked so differently defensively the last two games. No surprise they have gone from 127th in efficiency to 72nd. To me, biggest aspect has been the help defense. Xavier was only 9-of-19 on layups yesterday. It was a layup line against Boston College.

- I think St. John's has found something with Nahiem Alleyne starting at the two and Jordan Dingle coming off the bench. Just feels like it fits better. Dingle as a microwave scorer off the bench seems like a good role for him and Alleyne/Daniss Jenkins seem to mesh better together. They also give the Johnnies their best defensive duo in the backcourt. Will have a big story on Alleyne at some point tomorrow.
- Appreciate Glenn Taylor Jr. He's been an unsung hero. Doesn't score much, but does all of the little things and is gaining confidence with his jumper. St. John's was plus-21 when Taylor was on the floor yesterday.

- St. John's is now 58th in the NET and 47th on KenPom. 2-3 in Quad 1/2 games and a bunch of those are coming up. Trending in the right direction.
- Stat that has impressed me the most about Joel Soriano: 1.8. As in assists. It's a career-high and soaring. He has 15 in his last four games. Is really improving as a passer. His line yesterday of 18 points, 14 rebounds, six blocks and five assists was silly-good. He's playing like an All-American.

- UConn on Saturday is much more interesting than I assumed a week ago. St. John's is playing better and Huskies may not have star center Donovan Clingan (ankle). Huskies will obviously be angry after losing to Seton Hall, but this isn't the same impossible task with Clingan out. Great test for a team that is starting to come together.
-- Lastly, anyone notice the leap from RJ Luis on the bench on one of Joel Soriano's dunks? I was told he practiced some on Tuesday. Seems to be feeling much better. Something to keep an eye on.

I will bow to more of the Insiders on the Posh issue about his departure to answer your question on proof .
It seemed pretty widely known that Pitino asked Posh about some things about commitment and didn’t appear there was a meeting of the minds .

Rick Pitino was waiting for the perfect moment to unleash the zone. Was he playing possum the whole non conference season or was this the culmination of 10 games worth of chemistry? That moment seemingly was the Big East opener against Xavier and Sean Miller’s squad didn’t know what hit em. Frank and I discuss the 15 point win, Nahiem Alleyne getting the start, Drissa Traore’s development, Joel Soriano playing like and All American and we preview the big opportunity against UConn this Saturday

Play within your abilities…that’s all I ever ask from a player. Taylor is the prime example of doing that on this team and Jenkins is the prime example of not doing it.

Soriano should get 20 shots before Jenkins got 10. Even a Soriano miss is not a bad play.
I am becoming less and less interested in which SJU backcourt combination is more dangerous, because this new Larry Wright-Marillac dynamic duo is scaring the hell out of me.

Having met a bunch of guys awhile back and having seen pictures of others, I would put a Larry Wright / Marillac tandem as prohibitive favorites in 2 on 2 game vs any other 2 posters.

Posh left and the ship has sailed. The team never made the nit with him. So why people are clamoring for him, really doesn’t change anything.
Daniss is a better all around player anyway. I liked posh but he didn’t elevate the program to anything except mediocrity.

That’s an awesome summation to keep things in perspective

I’ll absolutely take you up on that and pick a team member

Actually already for my team member. I’ll take Monte. Game to be played in June you pick indoors or outdoors won’t matter
