Xavier, Sun. Jan. 29, 6pm, FS1/970AM

Rebounding and officiating were horrible. St. John's could not hit some critical free throws and could not hit from the three point line tonight.

WTF WAS THIS EMOTION ALL GAME LONG?
MARCUS NEEDS TO PLAY UNDER CONTROL.

DOWN 4 WE'RE IN THIS, LETS TAKE IT.

But no matter what happens we played hard & put in a good show for the recruits!

With all due respect, no, playing hard for five minutes is not playing hard. I may be a minority's of one but 23 games into the season I feel this is an underachieving team. We still think games are won on offense and they are not. We do not consistently hustle, we do not fight for 50-50 balls. We are young, but by this time of the year, in this league, we should understand what playing 40 minutes means, what it would have meant tonight was a W.

Agree the absence of defensive intensity, fighting for 50-50 balls & being predominately focused on the other end of floor is frustrating. (Especially at this point in season)

"we all due respect" etc.
I still believe one could conclude we played hard & gave the recruits something positive to think about - missed 5 of 23 from 3 point land and many missed FTs means a few more, very few more, balls in the hoop & we take the game.

Was not the foe Xavier a good team with a lot to play for? It's not
Like we were opposing LIU
:)

All the best

LoVett and Ponds both said they need to play as they did over final 10 minutes for entire game. #sjubb

Xavier players said Edmond Sumner was with doctors, so didn't see him afterwards.

Ponds post game comment;

Sumner getting hurt probably kept us in the game but still good effort to make it close. We are not getting any better with rebounding and defense and some of this has to go to the coaching staff however inept our players are.

Just when you think we were going to get blown out the kids fought back. Can't win giving up 17 offensive boards, Xavier out rebounded us 45 to 26. We took advantage after Sumner's injury. Thought they toyed with us early in first half. too many points inside.

Shooting comes and goes for all teams and all players, especially from 3. Defense is the constant and defense is predicated on effort. How close we made the final score and being able to rationalize the loss doesn't matter to me, the lack of consistent effort does. If it was a one time thing, ok, but this team consistently mails it in on the defensive and hustle side for long portions of games.

It is on both coaches and players; keeping it close means nothing though at this level. This was a very winnable game even if Sumner hadn't got hurt but this team does not want to get dirty.

This team is pitifully small.

Hard to get dirty, when other teams have more height or weight/strength or both.

Men vs boys a lot.

I could not disagree more, effort and hustle have nothing to do with size, everything to do with heart. If you think this team leaves it on the floor on defense and fighting for loose balls for 40 minutes, so be it, I do not. Funny, we were not too small the last 5 minutes tonight or Providence or the game against Butler.

I agree with you in effort and hustle...but that should be a given.

Two teams with equal effort, the smaller team will get hurt on boards or being defended more often.

I just have concerns with our teams strength levels.

Obviously as has already been stated, bad defense, slow close outs and very low energy for good portion of game.

This was a winnable game.

In my mind, if we would have forsaken the outside shot earlier and taken it to the basket earlier in the game, we would have won. They had no one who could stay with Lovett or Ponds.

I don't disagree about the smaller team being at a disadvantage but Nova has played small for years, frustrating to see this team play 30-35 minutes of lackadaisical ball and then play with intensity.

Just got in from the game and the Refs ruined this game.. I thought we should have attacked the hoop more in first half we were in the bonus with 12 minutes to go and we stopped attacking. The Refs were calling everything and we should have did more. Also, Mussini and Freudenberg should not be on the floor at the same time. Finally, need to play a full 40 minutes and we only played 10 tonight. SHows the potential.

Otherwise I thought we ran a nice offense when we did not force shots.
Rebounding is the key and we are lacking.in that area.

Yeah, they go down 15 before they decide to play, that's not acceptable to me. How about playing for 40minutes?
Maybe you win the game then.

Offense has looked good at times throughout the year with Ellison driving and kicking for open shooters. But he missed Shamorie a few times tonight, one in transition where Ponds would have had a wide open 3. Ellison ended up getting fouled, but Ponds was frustrated and I hope they call Ellison out when reviewing the game tape.

Crowd was small but got loud when STJ made the 2nd half run. Lovett missing 3 of 4 free throws at one point hurt. Three ball wasn't dropping, and the refs called the game way too close....
