Williams

Can anyone name an SJU player with a similar circumstance - 13th man emerging mid-season as a productive player?

Really a different situation but Sean Evans went from 0 minutes to very solid contributer his senior year. Happened at about the same point in the season too.

Difference was Evans questions revolved around his head whereas Williams was his athleticism.

I don't think anyone ever questioned Williams athleticism but rather his health has always been the concern. As a result of not playing for a few years his conditioning is now perhaps not up to par with the other members of the team. Williams makes it real easy to root for him. As with Bashir and Lovett this kid has overcome a lot and travelled a long road in order to play at this level. Wishing all 3 the very best the rest of the season.

Apparently Williams really struggled in early practices. Rust and the need to get in shape were two elements of that & drove staff's decision to place him lower in pecking order initially. Give Williams a ton of credit for remaining positive as he worked hard to get his chance. He is very team first player & certainly a great story this year. Stay healthy big guy!

Not sure which game - maybe the Fordham game - but Williams is really a cut up on the bench in a good way, encouraging teammates and joking and keeping everyone loose. In the aforementioned game, he didn't get much run, but still was engaged end to end, and having an appropriate level of fun. IMO, just what the college game needs. Of course, it's great that he appears to be someone who can contribute a fair share of production as well.

Yeah reminds me of Dominique Wilkins
Runs funny and hung himself on rim on breakaway in one of the early games. Yakwe, Owens and Amar are way more gifted physically.
I thought he was terrible.
I was wrong. Has nice soft touch, long arms and battles down low. Might be our best low post player offensively. Good for him and us.

You are all quite welcome to join the LMF Williams Fan Club. The kid has always had the tools he is now getting to put to use. Unfortunately he got derailed by injury and by the staff deciding to play other recruits in front of him.

Just to keep expectations realistic, he is not an All-BE-First-Team kind of player. But he gives this team exactly what it needs, and that he has been scoring is just the icing on the cake. This is a team sport in which everybody has to play a role - what has folks so excited is that he's filling a role that nobody was willing or able to fill until he got some PT, and it's an important one for the success of the team as a whole.

And it's always really rewarding to see kids who work hard and are great teammates find success.

This team has a lot of personality: DWil, Amar, LoVett, Owens, etc. They all seem to be really good kids too. The combination makes them that much easier to root for.

I would add Mussini and Ponds to that. Ponds is reserved but he is a winner and Mussini was one of the first guys on the court hugging Ponds after the Butler win.

As for Williams both Monte and BOE are spot on. He knows how to play basketball and is always smiling.

I intentionally left Mussini out, lest I yet again be labeled biased ;)

As an infrequent poster (but one who nonetheless has been a diehard fan for 30+ years), have to take a little credit for my post on Williams this past summer, on an earlier version of this topic (although I sink back to earth with my innacurate comment about Mr. Yakwe):

"I see him [Williams] as a potential x-factor who has flown under the radar because of health issues, as well as excitement over a stellar recruiting class and proven potential of others, e.g., Yakwe. It's been a long road for him, would be a pleasant surprise and nice story."

Good call Baldi. You nailed it. Don't know of anyone else who had that kind of foresight about the kid.

Williams was a well-regarded athlete coming out of JC. He had several shoulder operations, which take time to rehab. He is ready to play now and I think will be a consistent contributor. Matt A. was correct in recruiting him. I hope he returns next year.

I was going to post , earlier in the season he was just as good of a cheerleader on the bench as Amar. Always has a smile and never complains. He doesn't have the size of Sima, but is much better offensively.

I saw this brought up during the season a little bit and saw some mixed answers.

Does Williams have another year of eligibilty left? I don't remeber St. John's ever congratulating him on his senior season or anything. But, he was also referred to as a senior the whole season.

I think it would be great to get him back, not only for on the court but also off the court. It seems like he is a great team guy and also a leader as an older guy. Never complained about playing time or got into any trouble in his 2 years. Nothing you could do about injuries.

Also, on the court he has something we lack, which is a big body who can play physical in the post and also can put up some points from time to time. Unfortantly, you can probably argue he was our most skilled offensive player in the post this year. I believe a healthy Williams could definetly give us a productive 12-15 minutes per game next year.

In addition to that, the possible grad transfer market for legitimate bigs seems to be a little weak this year. So, I think that makes Williams that much more important.

Yes he is still eligible. I don't know that he will ever be 100% healthy though. One thing that I really like about him this past season is that despite being known as and inside/out player before coming to St John's he played within his role.

I believe they need to apply for a 6th year of eligibility, but they must be confident because they didn't honor him on senior day.
