Williams

Does he have any eligibility left after this season??

I was wondering the same, since he only appeared in 3 games last season due to injury maybe the Ncaa would grant him another year if he wanted to play next season.

I think Paultz said a while back he'll get two years, but not the third. Back when he didn't seem to have a future he would have been a candidate to play somewhere else next season. I suspect that plan will change if he continues his current play.
It appears that if he remains healthy SJU will likely apply with NCAA for another year.

Just to clarify and make sure we all agree, Williams came here with 3 years of eligibility so next year is a given, still part of the 5 years to play 4. After next year he could apply for a 6th year if last year is considered a redshirt year. NCAA sometimes looks favorably on 6th year's for kids who missed 2 due to injury, not for kids who sat out transfer years, which doesn't apply to Williams.

Of course if he's taking normal course work it's also possible that he could be a grad transfer after this season if he so desires and the school would have no say in it at all.

All of our young players and their advisors, parents, etc, should learn from this kid. Was a solid prospect headed to a very good program, who switched years and followed Matt. Has dealt with injuries and was an after thought coming into this season. All he did was seemingly be a good teammate, work hard and have a smile on his face while rooting his team on. Got his opportunity and has, thus far, made the most of it. Who knows what the season will hold and how he will play going forward, but I'm happy for him.

Only around here does the fan base go from trying to figure out how to get rid of a kid to free up a scholarship, to hoping and praying that same kid gets granted another year of eligibility from the NCAA. And all of this over the course of just a few weeks. Unreal!

I have never actually made a comment in hoping a kid transfers on this board. I come here for information & see what the fan base was has to say. Just saying.

With the lack of offense the SJU big men have contributed in recent years there was a few minutes in yesterday's second half when I thought I was watching Duncan and Robinson instead of Owens and Williams.

Duncan and Robinson. Started drinking early, did you? :)

It might have been the drinks but it was likely the excitement of Williams play which to me was totally unexpected and made me more hopeful about the rest of the year.

Can anyone name an SJU player with a similar circumstance - 13th man emerging mid-season as a productive player?

Bucknasty would be the first to tell you: he's been coached up. ;) B)

Really a different situation but Sean Evans went from 0 minutes to very solid contributer his senior year. Happened at about the same point in the season too.

If Sima doesn't leave, Williams probably doesn't get this opportunity to play
Looks like a case of addition by subtraction
Williams has been far more productive than Sima was this season

Happy Mullin has given Darien Williams extended minutes to contribute to the team. After the surgeries I thought he would not be fully recovered to play a role. He is a good shooter and has a soft touch around the basket. With Yakwe slow to develop his offensive skills Williams provides a nice balance.

Not just you 72 but the entire board. To a man there was no one who would have expected Williams to play the way he has. He has been a fantastic surprise. honestly, and as Monte pointed out earlier today, 3 weeks ago we were all certain he would be gone at the end of the season. Now we all hope the kid has the stamina and can remain injury free in order to give us 20 minutes a game for the rest of the season and g d willing next season and perhaps beyond. A strange season for us SJU fans to say the least. 2 weeks ago we had the worst staff in Division 1 now posters expect us to best top 20 teams. SMH. :)

Williams has really good instincts and understands the game. He know where to position himself for rebounds. He knows the right moment to slide over and help on defense. He knows where he belongs in the offense sets. He knows how to pick and roll, for cryin' out loud!!!!!! Etc. Don't want to get overly excited about the kid, especially with his past health issues, but like everyone else I appreciate what he's given us over the past few weeks, and hope it continues.

Speaking of BN, he's been awfully quiet over the past few weeks. Wonder if he's ever gonna admit that maybe he jumped the gun with all the "fire Mullin" related threads?

As an infrequent poster (but one who nonetheless has been a diehard fan for 30+ years), have to take a little credit for my post on Williams this past summer, on an earlier version of this topic (although I sink back to earth with my innacurate comment about Mr. Yakwe):

"I see him [Williams] as a potential x-factor who has flown under the radar because of health issues, as well as excitement over a stellar recruiting class and proven potential of others, e.g., Yakwe. It's been a long road for him, would be a pleasant surprise and nice story."

Never posted any negativity regarding Williams as I live in Socal was familiar with high school career and defended him as a choice of Matt's

Difference was Evans questions revolved around his head whereas Williams was his athleticism.
