Williams

I think everyone agrees w Sima leaving we needed another big. Who would have thought we had one on our bench. A month ago Williams barely got into games during garbage time. What I really like about him is he doesn't try to do to much. Doesn't take 3 pt shots, but can make the 2 pointer, rebound and defend.A real pleasant suprise and I think he has had an impact on our recent resurgence. The announcer said yesterday he was our best offensive post player.

Hopefully he can sustain his fine recent performances & stay healthy. Not saying he is Wes Unseld, but it is such a relief to have a guy who doesn't fumble ball on penetrating passes down low. That quality will only make our talented backcourt guys more effective.

Well I think we had a preconceived notion that Williams was a garbage-time player because he wasn't playing. He's been off injured and maybe hobbled by that more than we realized. Doesn't mean he isn't healed up and ready to go now. Now that he's playing in real games, he seems to be getting up to speed.

From when he first committed....
"Originally from California, Williams played his first JUCO season at Iowa Western Community College, averaging 16 points per game and seven rebounds, shooting 41% from outside the arc. He took 29% of his shots from beyond the arc, so he's not strictly a deep shooter; and he shot 55% inside the arc and drew foul shots at a rate of 44% "

Funny that he said our main post guy now, but was known as a 3-point shooter In JUCO. that's dangerous when other post players have to guard him, but most important are those foul stats. He's gonna get to the line a lot, and is a good free throw shooter. If he keeps playing like he is, he makes us much more dangerous.

The tiny amount I saw him last year he mostly roamed outside and tossed up threes. Admitably a very small sample size before he went down for the season. Given that this years sample is also tiny right now he seems much more suited to his current role.

He has been a revelation.

Perhaps the staff has told him that they don't need him to be a 3 pt threat and to play inside more than not and are practicing that specifically.

More like "do the opposite of whatever Alibegovic does"...

He plays, as does Owens, like a player should that missed over a year of competitive basketball. Like a man with something to prove. He does his best to compensate for lack of size and strength with a positive attitude and willingness to compete. there are games where he will be overmatched, but he will still be in there trying.

Don't think you can say lack of size perhaps strength Williams is 6-8 and owens 6-11

Williams is going to have to guard the opposing center a bunch this year. He is undersized for that position.

He has a nice 15 foot jumper, some nice moves around the basket ,baby hook shots think he will get better as we grand as CM gives him more mins Oh and he does pretty good at the foul line under pressure

With the lack of offense the SJU big men have contributed in recent years there was a few minutes in yesterday's second half when I thought I was watching Duncan and Robinson instead of Owens and Williams.

MCNPA
nice post
Who knows the talley of Ls and Ws this year...I predicted about 15 Ws ( yes we might not make that lofty #) - but when I think back on most (not all) of the past 20 + years and cringe - what a great time to be a red storm fan now! We have talent, options, recruits, hope!
Something I've pondered often - every reason SJU can be on the small catholic non- football level ala Villanova, Gonzaga, Xavier...w CM maybe we will finally get there
CM is a winner, he came here to win.
We are fortunate!

He always had the skills -- I think the issue was a combination of being rusty/not in game shape, and fearing for his shoulder's life. I really think there were some mental hurdles to overcome regarding the injuries. All of which probably led to confidence issues. May have stayed buried if not for the staff getting desperate, but glad they finally got to see what they really have.

I expect him to get better and better as the year progresses.

Does he have any eligibility left after this season??

He didn't play his second year of juco and sat out most of last year with injury. I would imagine he should be able to get a fifth year, but don't know the status.

I posted this question regarding williams on another thread but don't recall getting a response. Does williams also have knee issues? Seems like he wears a brace and doesn't run particularly well. That being said, I absolutely love the kid. He has become my new favorite player. What a story if he could play consistently well this year and help lead the johnnies to a winning record in conference play.

I was wondering the same, since he only appeared in 3 games last season due to injury maybe the Ncaa would grant him another year if he wanted to play next season.

I think Paultz said a while back he'll get two years, but not the third. Back when he didn't seem to have a future he would have been a candidate to play somewhere else next season. I suspect that plan will change if he continues his current play.

It appears that if he remains healthy SJU will likely apply with NCAA for another year.

Only around here does the fan base go from trying to figure out how to get rid of a kid to free up a scholarship, to hoping and praying that same kid gets granted another year of eligibility from the NCAA. And all of this over the course of just a few weeks. Unreal!
