Who was the most impressive opposing player that SJU faced ?

Off topic but as a teenager I attended a couple of the afternoon sessions of the Dec 55 Holiday Festival which not only had Bill Russell but Willie Naulls , Tommy Heinsohn and a small but tough Syr backcourtman Jimmy Brown.
The losers brackets were held in the afternoon in those days and it was easy to move down to the good seats.

Great memory by Section 9. Paultz hits a buzzer beater in 1969 to beat Davidson, and Billy Schaeffer hits one in 1972 against them as well.

I remember this game... We won, but Iverson lit us up for 39 points

He was freakishly quick

At the garden probably Cazzie Russell. I have a vague memory of Seeing Kareem play for UCLA at the old Garden, but it might not have been against the Johnnies.
That UCLA game was in the Holiday Festival. We beat then #2 UNC in the semis by two, got smoked by #1 UCLA by eighteen, and then less than a week later, beat the new #2, Davidson on the road as our very own Paultzman hit a 15' as time expired for a 75-74 win. I remember listening to that game on the radio and hearing a fan yell "Go home, you damn Yankees".:)

I was at MSG for the Festival, and the place was nuts for all three games.
My recollection was beating Davidson on a buzzer beater a week after the guys beat a few ranked teams, including South Carolina with Brian Winters and Kevin Joyce, the week before to win the Holiday Festival. Was there an earlier Davidson victory on the road? Whatever it is, looks like a lot of us are getting old.
Holiday Festival we played Much St. UNC and UCLA, then Davidson on the road. We didn't play S Car that season.

Davidson got it's revenge when they beat us in the NCAAs at College Park at season's end.

I remember him well - saw him play against us at Alumni Hall during my high school days when my Dad had tickets. Played briefly in the ABA before going over to play in Europe; excellent college player.

And a pretty good coach at Davidson

Mike Maloy
That was an especially hard loss to take given that Maloy was a local kid who got away. Would've loved to see him in a St. John's uniform. Sadly, he succumbed to the flu in 2009 at age 59.

Freakish, indeed. I had something like a second- or third-row court-side seat for that game, and I couldn't believe how high he could sky, especially since he was generously listed as 6-feet. Repeatedly made my jaw drop.

rick barry for one game.
ewing for 4 years.
I listened to that Davidson last second victory. I remember that anti yankee comment when game ended.
I kept the radio broadcast of that Davidson game for years. played the last minute often for chuckles.

I always felt not getting Maloy, a Queens PSAL player, was one of SJU's five toughest recruiting losses. He was a three-time college All-American at Davidson, and their first black recruit. Those Davidson teams were denied the final four only because they couldn't get past the excellent NC teams.

I have a vague memory of Pete Maravich lighting us up at Alumni Hall.
Anyone know if I am having old age hallucinations or is my recall correct?

Maravich game was not at CA. I think it was an in season tournament game on a neutral court and he did light us up

Louie's coaching technique for that game was that Maravich would get his 30 points and we whould stop everyone else. Didn't really work

I think we played LSU a couple of times. Once at the Rainbow Christmas tourney and once in the NIT, at MSG. I think Mulzoff may have been the NIT coach. Maravich killed us both times.
