Who was the most impressive opposing player that SJU faced ?
Donyell Marshall had 40-plus against us a couple of times one year, including the Big East Tournament.

He was an impossible matchup. Too quick for forwards to guard, and too tall for guards.
Also 20-20 from the line if I recall correctly.
The list is a long one because invariably we made good players look great and allowed career points by average players in the last few years.
Was it us who let a mid-major guy named Bradd with two d's kill us?

Ewing was definitely the best I remember, but Pearl Washington played some fantastic games against us at the Garden and I remember Darrel Griffith and Louisville beating us in a big game at Alumni Hall in 1980

Who was that doofy looking kid on San Francisco? Didn't he make 100% of his 3's all game during one of our games under Lavin?

The doctors of dunk. That game was on national TV, and before the game they set up cameras on both backboards to catch the mayhem; they weren't disappointed. We hung around and they beat us by five.
I n person at Alumni Hall/Carnesecca, Rick Barry, Calvin Murphy, Dave Bing, Ernie D & Marvin Barnes all come to mind. At the garden probably Cazzie Russell. I have a vague memory of Seeing Kareem play for UCLA at the old Garden, but it might not have been against the Johnnies.
That UCLA game was in the Holiday Festival. We beat then #2 UNC in the semis by two, got smoked by #1 UCLA by eighteen, and then less than a week later, beat the new #2, Davidson on the road as our very own Paultzman hit a 15' as time expired for a 75-74 win. I remember listening to that game on the radio and hearing a fan yell "Go home, you damn Yankees".:)

I was at MSG for the Festival, and the place was nuts for all three games.

That holiday festival, and the one the previous year, were great, even though we lost in the championship game both years. It reminds me of another great opposing player - Charlie Scott from NC.
At Alumni Hall, I'd vote for Ernie D on that powerhouse Friar team.

To think of the Holiday Festival with Bill Russell, Alcindor, Jerry Lucas and so many others and what it is now.

Here are the top 100 players SJU ever faced:

1. Patrick Ewing.
2-100. Everybody else.
I remember John Bagley of BC having some big games against us. Followed by Michael Adams.
Another BC guy that killed us multiple times was Jim O'Brien
Clearly not the most impressive opposing player but an SJU "killer" nonetheless

Back in the day there weren't a whole host of "holiday" tournys around, and NYC & MSG were a huge draw for the out of town rubes. Nowadays, fans and teams, want to go to Hawaii, PR, the Carribean and other "exotic" places. The explosion of these tournys killed the Holiday Festival, but I hear 'ya as far as how it's gone downhill.

Didn't know -- or at least, didn't remember -- that Bill Russell led USF to the 1955-56 Holiday Festival title. I admit I was alive, but I know I wasn't there. Would have remembered if I were.

MOP that I saw, Jay Vincent of Michigan State in the '79 Lapchick Tournament. Scored 53 points in the two games, 30 vs SJU against double coverage, and was named tournament MVP despite SJU defeating MSU in the finals.

Hate to say it and I only do so in the context of college career, but Richard Hamilton of Yukon. (obviously he pales in comparison to Michael Jordan overall) Not someone you'd think of as an all time great and to look at him he was not particularly imposing in any way but fact was that he was a pretty much unstoppable college player against all competition.

Yeah, i frame it as what players killed us most often, never mind the guest killers.
So, Big East opponents in my view.
And guys like Hamilton, Marshall, Ewing, have got to head that list.

Just remembered one: Scottie May of Indiana. One of the greatest college players I have ever seen. To me, this thread is not about somebody that just had a great game against us, but a player who was an all time great college player and showed it when he played us. I was at the game we played Jordan in the Garden, and everyone saw his potential, but I don't know, being a college sophomore at the time, that anyone predicted him becoming either one or 2 as the greatest pro ever.

My recollection was beating Davidson on a buzzer beater a week after the guys beat a few ranked teams, including South Carolina with Brian Winters and Kevin Joyce, the week before to win the Holiday Festival. Was there an earlier Davidson victory on the road? Whatever it is, looks like a lot of us are getting old.
