Who was the most impressive opposing player that SJU faced ?

My vote is for Miami's Rick Barry unless one wants to go back to our only appearance in the NCAA championship game when we had to misfortune to face Kansas with Wilt!

I would have to look it up to be sure, but I remember St. John's getting lit up by Calvin Murphy and Pete Maravich. May have been the same year.

Can't find the LSU game. I remember it was in a tournament, or so I thought. Niagara was a yearly game back then.

Maravich scored 44 I think against us in Hawaii, 1969 or so. Best I saw in person was Michael Jordan and Bernard King; both wins for us.

I n person at Alumni Hall/Carnesecca, Rick Barry, Calvin Murphy, Dave Bing, Ernie D & Marvin Barnes all come to mind. At the garden probably Cazzie Russell. I have a vague memory of Seeing Kareem play for UCLA at the old Garden, but it might not have been against the Johnnies.

we played LSU in the Garden, was there in the early 70's. Mike Keiilty guarded Pete and did a decent job, though we still lost. thought is was the Holiday Festival, could be wrong/

Alcindor and Jordan are probably the greatest players to play SJU but Barry and Maravich played better the nights they played us.

For me it was Allen Iverson. I went to see the SI cover boy Felipe Lopez and Allen Iverson stole the show. Never saw anything like him.

I did very much enjoy where Lopez had the ball around the three-point line with Iverson on him tight, and Felipe made it look like he was going to try to take him, but then unexpectedly passed to Mo Brown, who drained the shot. I can't tell you which game, or score, or any other details, but the moment stuck with me after all these years.

It was KU's Clyde Lovellette who did us in. But that was a one-time thing. Ewing was a constant thorn in our side for four years.

Totally agree that Ewing was as good as any college player they played against - I was incorrectly only listing those I'd seen live against the Johnnies. Iverson was another one I'd forgotten that others mentioned who I actually did see play against them live in the Garden.

I believe Joe Barry Carroll killed us in an NCAA Tournament game vs Purdue in 1980 I think. Then Chuck Person Killed us the year after the Final Four season when we played Auburn in NCAA's.

The list is a long one because invariably we made good players look great and allowed career points by average players in the last few years.
Seriously speaking I think Calvin Murphy, even though only 5'9, was the most impressive opponent I have ever seen. One of the purest shooters of all time and a money free throw shooter.

Donyell Marshall had 40-plus against us a couple of times one year, including the Big East Tournament.

He was an impossible matchup. Too quick for forwards to guard, and too tall for guards.

Maybe our new AD can add an "all opponent" wing (mostly Dukies?) to CA ... provided we add enough "legacy" players of our own to offset it.:(
