Who is the speediest player in SJU hoops. Who is the smoothest opponent you e

Watching Dunn this year, I'd put him up there with those with jet engine on back. Agree with Cain & Lovett too.

Smoothest opponent- Iverson should be in mix.

Smooth is such a debatable word.

For instance, I don't consider explosive players like Iverson or Ray Allen or Kerry Kittles to be the definition of smooth since they could easily dunk on anyone and stare them down.

I think guys who quietly slice and dice you like the aforementioned Lawrence Moten or Doug West or Eric Murdoch or (mine) Reggie Williams are the epitome of smooth.

Agree. That underhanded free throw was smoothness personified.

I have waaay too much free time, so I'm going off topic. In a nod to Ohiofan, the speediest player not in SJU history is Alphonso Davies.:) ;)

I have to go with David Cain as the speediest and Kerry Kittles as the smoothest opponent

How is speed defined? In a race? Running the fast break? With the ball coast to coast? Beating a guy off the dribble? The NBA combine measures speed with a shuttle run and a 3/4 court sprint.
Kevin Williams was an explosive player. I don't know if the NBA had a combine back then.

I thought of a couple one year players.

Fastest - Boo’s running mate in 87-88 Michael Porter
Smoothest - Carmelo Anthony

I wouldn't put Porter in the fastest group but he definetly belongs in the leaping catagory, probably at the very top.

Smooth to me is unflappable. Doing everything seemingly without breaking a sweat. I'm thinking a George Gervin type. Khalid El-Amin comes to mind. Scottie May was smooth. Efficient without being showy. Smooth means knowing how good you are, and not needing to scream it out to the world.

You're not going to change my mind about Kittles or Allen. Sure, they could power to the rim -- didn't most of the names who've come up, even Malik, whom many posters are citing (as they should), could be dominant, but when they were on their games, they were very smooth.

El-Amin! and then follow it up with "...and not needing to scream it out to the world" Aside from being nauseated I'm wondering how we could have watched the same guy? I'm self-moderating my original words used to in place of "smooth" and I will just say that unlike say Ray Allen, El Amin was one of the biggest all time showboaters ever, anywhere.

On the speediest side I agree Lovett had another gear but we never really saw it. Maybe Panther saw more of it at practice and he had a better handle and shot than Colin Charles, but Charles was the fastest. In fact I was on the floor in a game where El Amin couldn't keep up with Charles and was holding his jersey. At another moment while lining up for Free Throws El Amin reaches over and squeezes Artest's butt, long and hard. Artest throws up his hands looking around and at the refs. Total blinders just like with the jersey. Total cheating ####. I seem to recall a game vs Pitt El Amin was taunting both players and fans and there was some ruckus about this but again not much as Yukon was the Big East version of Michael Jordan like G'town in the 80s. Unless it is a reference to a toilet, smooth is definitely not the right adjective here. And for even more fun, after that game at MSG, the yukon fans were running around screaming in the hallways at MSG and scaring kids and puking everywhere. It was a disgrace.

OK. El-Amin was an ass. But that Easter ham has a lot of sodium, and it has to be washed down with something. I chose Prosecco. Now that I can think straight. Sam Perkins was as smooth as you can get. I think we played against N.C. in the garden when both Jordan and Perkins were on that team.

Agreed. The (sodium) got to me too. On a related argument, Jordan is arguably best NBA player of all time but definitely top 3 and Wilt probably has a better argument. College, Jordan wasn't even the best on his team. Top 3 on his UNC team and Worthy was #1. He was a great college player but no way was he the greatest college player of all time. He wasn't even drafted #1 in his draft. There are probably a couple dozen players or more who were more dominant at the college level.

Yes that is a much better description but maybe his leap towards the basket still blurs my mind.

I found this video.

#23 on Rutgers was Craig Carter from Bronx Science

According to an announcer doing a St. John's vs. UCLA, Porter's vertical leap was 45". He asked Porter how high he jumped, and he answered "high enough".

I played against Porter in a pickup game at Alumni Hall right around the time he was leaving the team. I was truly stunned at how he got up. It seemed supernatural. I'm not kidding. It was not on the normal human scale.
