When did you find this site and how?

I found the site by looking for recruiting news. This was in the Jarvis years. We always had an NBA prospect or two waiting in the wings. It was a couple of years before I began posting...then a few more years before I was banned. It's all good.

Not Snoop Dog's brother?

Don't remember when exactly I joined. Think I found the site via google. I was a long time voyeur, occasional poster. First time I posted of consequence was when I started a thread titled "Someone hurt?" or something like that. One day I was walking on York Ave and 72nd St. (right by HSS) when I noticed a tall young man across the street. He was wearing an SJU basketball jacket and was on crutches. Before I could get a good look at him(although from a distant he resembled Chris Obekpa), he got in to a cab. After I posted I got lambasted by some of the very posters who have now become my friends. I got called a rumor monger amongst other less flattering things, and some even implied that there was an element of racial bias involved in my observation. As it turned out, a few hours later it was reported that Obepka had badly sprained his ankle in practice, and would be out for a few weeks. The stand up posters apologized to me. The rest hid. LOL.
Decades ago, in the pre internet era I use to regularly speak over the telephone with an enthusiastic fan named 'Tom". We met through the newsletter "Big East Briefs" .

Tom made a connection with "Paul" through the AOL chat group. I recall "Tom" telling me that "Paul" was going to set up an internet message board for St. John's fans. I joked that there would be maybe 10 posts per week. I was wrong.

Paul established the website Redmen.com and it was an instant hit.

Redmen.com predates Rivals and every other message board I am aware of.

The Redmen.com has given St. John's fans a place to bitch, complain and occasionally pound their chest with optimism. The website has also given me an opportunity to meet a handful of Redmen.comers who have become real friends. If I did not live 100s of miles away I would have the opportunity to personally meet more posters.

What I have come to believe over the years is that any poster on Redmen.com that is a regular to the site regardless of how annoying their posts may be is nevertheless a true fan.

So yeah, everyone reading this post knows that Redmen.com has been a success for decades but what not enough know or appreciate is just how much time and money "Paul" has put into the site year after year, after year for which he has elected to charge zero fee whatsoever for the privilege to read and post on his site..

Hey Paul ..... Thank you.
Otis, I remember Big East Briefs well. Thanks for the memory.

My wife and I have attended St John's games since the mid 1960's,when students tickets cost $1. She knows how fanatical I have always been about the program. She discovered this site and encouraged me to use it to keep me out of her hair a few hours a day.

Thanks for everything, Paul. You helped keep me married for almost 48 years.
I read about some guy named Paul launching this site on the aol St Johns basketball message board . Assume it was mid 90's. Aol message boards before that. Who else?
Yes me too.

If I remember correctly, I first read about redmen.com when one of the local tabloids referenced it in a column speculating who Mahoney's replacement would be. I didn't own a computer at the time, so I had to check it out on my at-work computer and was immediately hooked. Spent lots of office time reading the posts on the sly. Prior to that -- and continuing up until I bought my own computer -- I ran up ridiculous phone bills -- four or five times what they had normally been -- calling a Big East recruiting pay-telephone site (the name escapes me; anyone remember it?). Spent a small fortune just following the closing days of Richard Hamilton's recruitment, making calls from home every 15 minutes or so for the latest update. (We all know how that turned out.) Now, visiting the site is one of the first and last things I do each day ... though I no longer have to look over my shoulder when I read the posts.

Haha!

Why Richard Hamilton? I don't ever recall St. John's ever being in the running for him.

We probably weren't, but no doubt they knew that as long as it sounded like we (or anyone else) were involved, they could sucker people like me into constantly calling them for updates. And they did it with a number of other so-called recruits as well. Hey, live and learn ... and thank God (and Paul!) for redmen.com.

Ha! I called that Big East line (Greg Shemitz) a handful of times between '96-'97. I probably could count on both hands and still have fingers remaining. It only updated about 3 times a week if I recall.

I became a subscriber of "Big East Briefs" in '96 as well. It came weekly, which was damn good at the time for a recruiting junkie like myself (don't particularly follow it as vigorously these days). Not to mention, we was on a roll with commitments when I started my subscription.

The last time I called the line was during Artest's commitment. Shemitz mentioned he would update the info on his hotline the day Artest committed. I remember calling the line around 11pm or so and getting the information.

Different times and the re-emergence of fun times for the program per the '97 class.

The very last time I called, there was confirmation of Anthony Glover's commitment. Remember it well because -- much to my girlfriend's annoyance -- I did it during the final episode of "Seinfeld."

Better during the climax of Seinfeld than...:)

Haha! The call should've not taken more than a minute.

If I recall correctly, I came on board in the late 90’s or early 2000’s. I needed to keep up to date on my alma mater. There’s nothing like sharing a big victory celebration with true fans. ( rare occurrence over the past 20+ years).
I joined either just before or just after Jarvis became coach. I was on the Big East site and it was dissolving and someone, likely TIS, mentioned this site and I joined up. I too am thankful to Paul and others for all that they do, especially living in the center of UCONN-land it got me through a lot of anguish which will resurface next year.
Where in CT do you live? We should try to get a spot in CT where some of us posters who live up here in UConn territory can have our own "watch party"
I was informed of the site by The General (SS&G) I think around the time Lavin took over.
My friends and I had 4 season tickets since my senior year during the 76-77 season. I had those tickets for many years, through the Mullin era and right up until I started moving around the tri-state area a lot for work in the mid 90's. SS&G and I attended many games together over the years. I have known SS&G since I was in 5th grade and became close friends with his younger brother. God that is over 55 years ago!

That' a great idea - I would love to get to know some of the posters. Next year's UCONN game could be fun. Maybe we could have it at one of Geno Auriemma's places. :)
