What's in a name?

The adopted name "Red Storm" serves as further evidence of the tone deafness of the past athletic administrators at St. John's.

Red Express would have been fire.
Very NYC.
I liked thunder the horse.
Johnny thunderbird should have been the Red Phoenix....powerful xmen. Just my Opinion. =)

Since we changed nickname we have been stuck most years with the curse of the Redmen--maybe instead of Red Storm it should have been Red Tide as our results have been mostly Toxic. I still have my tee shirt with the dribbling Chief.
As a person of Irish extraction, I find Syracuse's Orangemen name to be highly offensive.

Not to mention the animal activists who would have had an issue with Gorilla Monsoon.

Why does the mascot have lightning flying up into his ass? Shouldn’t it be headed in the other direction?

Hamilton & Shaw would have loved that
You are smearing an innocent man just because his last name starts with an H. . .

Oddly enough, I think being overly PC can marginalize a minority culture a lot more. We need to look at context and intent. Was the intent with Redmen ever to offend? Was it ever intended to cause harm and dog whistle to bigots? The clear answer is no. Being overly sensitive and forcing people to change names like this will only serve to have people avoid Indian cultural references altogether out of fear of being labeled some ridiculous ism or ist. It will just be a big headache, so people will stop referring to them at all. Many polls show that actual Indians and not activists largely don't have any issue with it. As long as you present everything in a respectful manner like the Washington Redskins logo I think it's fine. I will admit though the Cleveland Indians logo is a bit over the top. I think you can make slight changes without throwing the whole thing out. But now people will avoid any and all references because of the PC mob. Isn't that kinda the opposite of what they want? You'd think they'd want minority cultures glorified.

Please define "overly PC" and "glorified" or should we leave that to your discretion depending on your mood?

Overly PC when the actual group in question largely doesn't care about it, yet tons of people claim they do. More often than not, the ones adamantly against this stuff are not even of that group's ethnicity. I would also say overly PC means context and intent are ignored. That's a very dangerous thing. Big difference when someone falls by accident vs. someone pulling the chair out from under them. That's my opinion at least. By the way, never heard anyone on here have an issue with the name of this very site but if you have a problem with the former team name, why support a site with that literal name? Isn't it offensive to post here then by that logic? PC culture gets people so far out in the weeds I swear. As a mostly Italian-American, I can't imagine how silly it would be to have some Italian mascot with a gold chain doing the pose Sonny does in A Bronx Tale and then have a non Italian-American tell me I need to be more offended. I realize we have different histories culturally obviously, but the point remains. Sounds a bit silly trying to tell minority groups how to feel when you aren't a member. If there were lots of polls out with 98% of Indians saying it's very offensive I would probably have a different opinion. But the opposite is true like it or not.
Instead of using the term “redmen” why didnt we just switch the the st johns indians. Then we could have kept the mascot.
Why is someone with an offensive caricature as his avatar even commenting on this?

So how do you feel about the New Jersey Informants of the National BASEketball League?

Bring back THE TUX--that guy had a lot of guts to wear the top hat and tails.
I always though we should have dropped the "men" and just be the St. John's Red
___________

.... or the St. John's Reds like the Syracuse has seemingly dropped the men out of Orangemen and now regularly identify as the Syracuse Orange.

The sad part is that StJohn's may well have paid an Ad agency to brainstorm the name "RedStorm".

Chief Jay, was one of the greats of the Old WWF. .. despite the fact that he was of Italian Heritage , when he got his War Dance going full tilt , it was bad news for the opponent . If you recall , he only got his War Whoops and Dance going after taking a terrific beating up to that point in the Match . But, that was what we loved about Pro Wrestling back in the Day . And , there were no surprises usually . You knew who was going to win . I remember taking my Son to MSG which was always Capacity to see Bob Backlund vs George “ The Animal ,” Steele for the Championship . George was like undefeated and everyone thought the bad guy was going to Win . Well, George had Backlund in one of his submission holds and poof , Backlund reverses it and pins George in like 30 seconds . If you blinked , you missed it . Well , Backlund takes his belt and George goes ballistic in the Ring . Biting and ripping the Padding on the ring posts and throwing the stuffing all over the place . And , of course , he skipped around the Ring bellowing his grunts and yells . Plus , showing everyone his Green Tongue . Hey , this has nothing to do with BB but , it was great fun in another era .

I’m still pissed over that day :)

I have always thought that if a change from Redmen was to be made the "Express" would have been a heck of a lot better than Red Storm.
Does anyone any background on how Red Storm was initially chosen? It doesn't seem that the nickname ever made anyone happy.
Think the day they chose the nickname there was a storm and it was red. :silly:
They had a meeting similar to when they choose a new coach. Red Storm was the result.
