What's in a name?

[quote="ghostzapper" post=371530]The ongoing politically correct argument for the name Redmen has made news in Killingly, Connecticut where the local school board has been arguing about the validity of the name for the High School team there. (see below)

Hope they defy these politicians and keep the name, they can take their political correctness and stick it where the sun don't shine. Sick of these idiots.
Oh you can't do this or can't have that name.
Sick of them. Glad Washington kept the Redskins, screw the nfl

The name was originally Johnnies. Around 1920 a reporter stated calling them the Redmen because of their uniforms. It morphed into the Indian which lasted until the politically correct crew objected and we caved and went to the Red Storm, which many have not accepted.

Time to go back to the Johnnies.

I certainly can't speak for everyone, but I personally think the St. John's Johnnies sounds as stupid as St. John's Red Storm.

agree...and the other St. John's U in Minnesota (D3) is also called Johnnies....

Instead of using the term “redmen” why didnt we just switch the the st johns indians. Then we could have kept the mascot.

A lot of toilet h7mor in this thread. I believe that we are named after St John the Baptist, so maybe we should change the name to the St John’s Baptists.

If this degree of political correctness was around 50 years ago, we never would have had the pleasure of watching Chief Jay Strongbow go into his war dance.

When the men's teams were the Redmen, the women's teams were called the "Express" with a subway car as their logo.

I have always thought that if a change from Redmen was to be made the "Express" would have been a heck of a lot better than Red Storm.

Does anyone any background on how Red Storm was initially chosen? It doesn't seem that the nickname ever made anyone happy.

Think the day they chose the nickname there was a storm and it was red. :silly:

I think it cam out around Tom Clancy's novel, "Red Storm Rising."

There was a committee headed by Carnesecca. Other final options were Thunder, Red Thunder, Rolling Thunder and Red Raiders.

in 2009, for the mascot, when the horse was changed the other options at the time were a thunderbolt, red storm dog, storm hero, red storm bear and thunderhorse. Thunderbird won via online fan vote. Then came the name Johnny Thunderbird via student vote.

I'm just wondering where this whole weather theme came into play. Does it have some history with the university? Based on all of the choices, they were going for that direction.

Guess that also explains where the ridiculous mascot comes from. No wonder this program has been a joke for the past 20 years

My understanding is that an esteemed committee, which included Coach Carnesecca, was formed to pick the new nickname. The only mandate was that "red" was required to be included in the recommended choice because the name "redmen" originally referred to the fact that our teams wore red uniforms.

After considering many options, the committee ultimately selected "Red Storm"
