What happened to Long Island basketball?

For those of you old enough to remember this Knick 1st round bust, Tom Riker went to St, Dominic's the So. Carolina.

If I'm not mistaken, Riker was also a Rhodes scholar, and went on to become a congressman.

you're not wrong often...but i believe you're thinking of tom mcmillan who went to maryland.

A bunch of kids from West Babylon & North Babylon (Vickers?) went to Iona, played for Valvano & the coach after him. I remember a few years the Babylon schools beat the Nassau County champs for the LI title.

North babylon won the A federation in 1983. I think they had a really good 6'10 or 6'11" guy back then, which would make them pretty tough to beat.

You are probably thinking of Russell Pierre (NC State before transferring elsewhere) or possibly Derek Brower (Syracuse). Brower was slightly taller but Russell was the better player. The Team won the A Federation as you stated beating Springfield Gardens (Anthony Mason Sr. was on that team but the star was Radar Anderson). Back then the A and B champs played each other for the Large School Championships while the C and D schools played for the small school championship.

North Babylon lost the Large School Championship to a Bishop Loughlin team who basically started five guards lead by our own Mark Jackson, the Wheeler brothers (both went D1) and James (?) Major (Seton Hall).

Thanks for the correction. I always confused the two - both from NY state, both big men, Maryland vs SC.

Tim Kempton>>St. Dom's>>Notre Dame>>NBA
Anoither kid (like McCoy) who was projected in 8th grade to be 7'4" or something crazy like that, but stopped growing at 6'8".
He had another kid on his team, about 6'9", named Vaughn (not sure his first name) who also went on to play in college.

Also, the Aguido kid who played in Huntington I think and went on to college ball.

I did not see it on here, but of course, DR. J (Julius Erving) from Roosevelt>>UMASS>>NBA>>Hall of Fame

Did Norm Roberts play on that Springfield Gardens team? To hear Norm tell it, he actually believed he was in Mason's class as a player in HS. I guess it's conceptually possible since NR was much shorter and did pile up some stats for some very bad (horrendous) Queens College teams. Then again, given Norm's self-assessment of his own coaching skills, ....

Yes, Roberts was also on that team (I forgot that).
