What happened to Long Island basketball?

Greg Cleuss and Richie M. Jackson played at St. Agnes.

Joe DePre played at Westbury

Randy Graham played at Calhoun.

Fred Lyson played at Oceanside

Eddie Kelly played at Maria Regina

Felix Balamou played at Our Savior New American

Tim Doyle played at St. Dominic's before tranferring to Northwestern

Derrick Brown was from Suffolk County, I beleive

Did Marco Baldi play at Lutheran ?

Was Gordan Thomas from Long Island ?

Thanks JSJ, informative; and Dr. J was one that got away - a big one!

Shaq's roommate at LSU was Dave Mascia out of Lynbrook.

And Vassil Evtimov played at LIL, although certainly not a native.

Danny Green from North Babylon.

Just remembered Tobias Harris from Islip...played at LuHi and Half Hollow Hills.

How could I forget Shelton Jones?! Went to Amityville.

Jason Fraser from Amityville was a McDonalds All American. He would have been a pro if he did not mess up his knees.

And Rick Pitino, who played at UMASS. Billy Donovan who played at St. Agnes and Providence. I think Greg Cluess was mentioned, but not Hank or Kevin (and Tim for that matter)

Albany coach Will Brown averaged 35 or 36 ppg as a senior at Miller Place.

Way, way back in the day Phil Hankinson who played at Penn went to Great Neck North and Billy Chamberlain who went to North Carolina played at L.I. Lutheran.

Both were great high schools players and had very good college careers.

A few names - Bret Bearup - went to Kentucky
Reggie Carter ?
John Farmer and Terry McCormick, both Hofstra transfers. Not sure where they played HS ball.

And how could we forget Denis Duval, from Westbury, who starred at Syracuse, and eventually became the police chief, who oversaw the initial Bernie Fine investigation, and evidently found nothing incriminating re Bernard. Duval beat us in the mid-seventies, at alumni hall, with a game ending jumper, with Mel Utley defending.

Tavoris Bell-Hemsptead then Rhode Island.
Speedy Claxton from LI I think, although he went to CTK

A bunch of kids from West Babylon & North Babylon (Vickers?) went to Iona, played for Valvano & the coach after him. I remember a few years the Babylon schools beat the Nassau County champs for the LI title.

Pretty sure Speedy was actually from Hempstead, which made choosing Hofstra pretty easy for him.

North babylon won the A federation in 1983. I think they had a really good 6'10 or 6'11" guy back then, which would make them pretty tough to beat.

For those of you old enough to remember this Knick 1st round bust, Tom Riker went to St, Dominic's the So. Carolina.

If I'm not mistaken, Riker was also a Rhodes scholar, and went on to become a congressman.

Long Island 1968 class had Bill Chamberlain (LUHI), Tom Riker(ST DOMS), Julius Erving(Roosevelt), Al Williams(Hempstead) who I believe were all drafted . From 1966 to 1974 a bunch of players from the Island drafted by the NBA and ABA.

The year the Knicks drafted Riker, most of the draft was horrible. Larue Martin was the overall #1. McAdoo was the best of the lot at #2. Erving went near the end of the first round. I'm guessing they knew he was elaning towards the ABA.

Al Skinner, class of 1969 went to Malverne and later played with the Nets before coaching at BC

I graduated from St. Mary's in Manhasset in 2003 (wow 10 years already) while Tim Cluess was the coach.... We had some great basketball teams while I was there, Danny Green was a fantastic player for us. I still remember absolutely crushing Chaminde by 40 or 50 points every time we played them and they have 1600 boys in that school compare to a school with 350 boys... We had some great games against St. Dominic's in Oyster Bay with Tim Doyle and Amittyville with Jason Fraiser and AJ Price. Two years later in 2005 they were #1 in the nation for almost the whole season.
