What do the redshirts have to offer ?

I'm optimistic on both of these guys because they are both known to do things we are really lacking this year. Clark is a banger that can rebound and play tough defense. Simon is a big body athletic guard that can also defend. Hopefully Simon is working on his jump shot, because with that he reminds me of Rysheed Jordan.

They both have the potential to be solid contributors in time
But, just like with Owens, don't expect too much too soon
They each have 1 year of experience at the D-1 level and didn't play a whole lot
It will take time for them to assimilate into our system
Having said that, they both came from great programs and were highly recruited
In time, I think they will be solid additions and integral members of our rotation

I get your point, but Clark played two years at MSU. However, not starter's minutes as noted,

Even though there is lack of game time, I'm high on him because it's three years of high D1 practices and scrimmages - two of those years with one of the best programs of the past 20 yrs.

RJ was more athletic, but I do see some similarities as well.

I'm expecting Clark will be the fundamentally sound, hard nosed PF(albeit undersized) that we so desperately need. In the mold of the oft-talked about Glover, Minland, Middleton, etc. Only with an outside shot as well. Not a game changer, but a solid piece to the puzzle. Expecting Simon to be the big athletic guard that we lack. Also not a game changer, but someone who can be a lock down defender against some of the bigger guards(IE Brunson) that we face. If everyone returns next year, the addition of these two should make us a much more balanced team, and a formidable one. Still wouldn't mind the addition of a true big body to bang down low.

Careful on expectations of Simon- no doubt he will be a welcome addition, but in 180 mins at Zona: 1-3 from three and 9-21 from the line and 14 TOs total. Nothing to impressive, spot minutes and knew his role. Hopefully year off and new scenery is good for him...and us

Totally agree. We are one big short of a dangerous team. Clark along side Bashir will form a terrific front line of scorers who are physical. If Yakwe stays I see a 10 minute role player but Clark immediately replaces him with his offensive game and strength. We need a backup for Tariq Owens who should start at center. I think he puts on 20 pounds over the next 8 months and turns into a key piece of the puzzle.

You can add 8 assists (season high: 1).

Agree we need to temper expectations on the offensive end, but our current crop of guards are already pretty good offensively. I'm really hoping that Simon can provide the one thing we lack in backcourt; someone with size, athleticism and most importantly someone that can play solid D against the bigger more athletic guards in the Big East. That would make him a very good complimentary player to our existing guards.

What do redshirts to offer in our case or cases. Broken hearts and forgotten dreams. Maybe one in five live up to the hype.

Well then as long as our unrealistic fan base doesn't over-hype em', there won't be any broken hearts and unforgotten dreams.

I am expecting Clark and Simon to improve their outside shots. This seems to be what Mullin and Richmond are good at teaching.

Agree. What also gets lost with rankings, reps, etc. is that word is these are two very good guys & teammates. Talented too! Thrilled they will join us & help fill a need for another big guard and physically imposing interior guy. With 2017 recruiting barren to date, we are fortunate to have these guys in the wings.

Before LIU game I sat at McDonalds booth connected to those two guys and a manager. A lady approached them asking for help on finding a gift for her son and they went really out of their way to help. Struck me as quality guys.

Gotta love this kid:

Great kid. No doubt a career in entertainment and/or politics awaits him when his playing days are over. Looking forward to seeing him play next year.

In terms of baseline, fairly confident they are better than all but 3-4 guys in our rotation. Maybe more but even if not think conservative expectation is clear rotational upgrade. Especially because, at least on paper, they both fill needs: bigger/longer guard and strong 3/4 that can help inside.

Spent 1 and 2 years respectively around 2 of the very best programs/coaches in the game. Having that experience and perspective may help us. Think I've said before, but just the fact that Clark practiced for Izzo for two years without being thrown off the team likely means he can help us in the defense/rebounding/toughness department. That's a different brand of basketball and expectation that I doubt he's just forgotten.

I love that video of Marvin Clark. I think its great for Simon to have a guy like that to sit out with. I hope he is a leader next year.
