Welcome Van Macon
Don’t mean to derail the optimism train, but wasn’t everybody elated when Mullin hired Slice and Matt A?
Our head coach won't be deferring to a teenager during timeouts, so there won't be any friction. And he won't have to choose between Macon or Cleveland after a season.

Do you mind explaining why?
I got to know him during his time at Rutgers, a pro through and through. Knows the game and how to teach it, is basketball connected in the best sense of the word and is committed, unlike many seemingly life time assistants who job or program jump, he put in the time at Hofstra, Rutgers, and St. Louis so another sign to me the program is finally headed for stability. I don’t pretend to be a personal friend or anything resembling that but Macon is someone I have great respect for.

Don't know much about him, but Slater seems to come off as an asshole who has an issue with Cleveland. Think I'll back Zach in this feud.

Was this deleted by Goodman light. This Slater is starting to piss me off. The nephew jabs. Even jabs like this. He deleted his nephew shot the other night too. Clearly he lacks class

That said, I appreciate the insights and am very hopeful that CMA can turn this ship around. I’m just struggling a bit to get very excited until I start seeing results. Seems like under the best if scenarios, that won’t be for a couple more years.
Can we at least wait until CMA goes 3 years with one recruiter on staff BEFORE we start to complain?

I may cancel 247sports if he keeps this crap up. Lol.

LOVE seeing this. Hoping the entire SJU family embraces CMA. He seems like a genuine guy who has put his heart into all of his stops along the way (Regardless of the outcome).

The only thing worse than being a douchey A-hole is one who's too cowardly to stand by his douchiness.

I was not elated because Slice was not connected to the new people on the AAU circuit. Slice had connections with the older CHSAA coaches who were no longer relevant in recruiting. Van Macon on the other hand is connected to all of the AAU programs in New York and is well respected by those running them.

Additionally, it is much easier to recruit for a proven winner like Mike Anderson than a novice coach like Chris Mullin.

GREAT Choice !
As its been stated he is a Corona, Queens guy. I knew him and his Dad when he went to Blessed Sacrament grammar school in Jackson Heights. My niece is a St Louis alumnus and I know he did a fantastic job there. This is a first class hire. The Coach is putting together a great staff!
Have a good weekend!

VAN was a standout H.S. player at Newtown H.S. & in his Senior year was named an ALL-City player by both the N.Y. Post & Daily News. He led his team deep into the PSAL play-offs and gave a Stephon Marbury Lincoln H.S. team a great game in I think it was the 1/4 Finals, beFORE Lincoln pulled away late in the game.

I saw him at Friday's "Old Timers Hall of Fame" dinner in Brooklyn. Some one posted a picture of Coach Anderson & Coach Carnesecca earlier & I guess you can say the "torch" has officially been passed. Van was also there & sat with the SJU contingent who were there tonite to honor former SJU great Mel Utley (Far Rockaway H.S.) Additional former SJU players there were Billy Shafer, who looks like he could suit up tomorrow. George Johnson via Lafayette H.S. & Felipe Lopez (Rice H.S.) who's recent Documentary showing of his "DOMINICAN DREAM" film is drawing nothing but rave reviews. Felipe was taking pictures with fans all night. Former SJU coach Fran Fraschilla who was also inducted into the Old Timer's Hall of Fame gave special mention of Felipe's dedication while coaching him for his 2 years at SJU. He suggested that adding Felipe to the University's staff in some capacity would be a bonus for St. John's. I for one, hope the idea gets some serious consideration.
Mean while, having Coach Macon on the staff is a GREAT addition to St. John's.

And there you have the principal reasons by the poster that is universally respected on this board when it comes to recruiting as to why Van Macon is a far superior choice to Slice. Van Macon is connected to the heads of all of the local AAU programs and is respected by all of them. What more do you need to hear. This coach is covering a much wider spectrum of possible recruits than we ever had which can only bode well. And as we have seen over the last 2 weeks this small staff has been everywhere in NYC and at all the big recruiting events. Their effort has been outstanding to date. Better to take a week or two more to get the right people than to rush and be disappointed in the results for 3-4 years before a change will be made.
Lastly, so far all 3 members have extensive experience in recruiting, coaching and developing players. This is a feature prior staffs have never had. I love it. Anxiously waiting on the fourth staff member to be announced.
