Welcome Steve DeMeo

I'm a big believer that when you do the right thing, make smart decisions and work hard, good things happen. Good things look like they're about to happen for St Johns! With each of the previous new coaching staffs, we had to convince ourselves that unusual or unconventional decisions were somehow gonna pay off and be the home run we've been looking for. But this staff is built on a real foundation. We don't have to convince ourselves of anything; the building blocks for success and for the longterm reclamation of our basketball program are in place! I plan to sit back and enjoy watching it all unfold.
It's a class A staff. Really good interchangeable parts who bring different recruiting and coaching angles and who are hungry to succeed. Trust me DeMeo did not leave a solid job in a tax free state (LOL) to so he could leave recruiting duties to someone else. All 3 of these coaches want to contribute.
This is a heckuva staff on paper. If things play out like I think they can with this staff, then I expect to be a 'tough out' and battling amongst the top 5 spots (or higher) in the conference on a routine basis.

I want to go punch for punch every year with Villanova.
I know LJ and Heron will leave after this year, so that will hurt.
Maybe starting year 4, we'll be right with Nova every year.

I don’t believe it will take Mike Anderson ( and his tremendous staff ) 4 whole years to get us on that top of the league level.
But no matter what, what has begun has exceeded our ( my ) expectations. We ARE headed in the right direction.
;)

Steve DeMeo seems to be tracking an under-the-radar 6-5" PG named Austin Van Zyl who plays for AS Monaco in France on a deal that kept his college eligibility intact.
Zyl's from Canada - South Africa, and is regarded as "a great passer with excellent vision and a great shooting stroke" whose offense has been stymied by injuries the past 2 years.
The bad news is that Indiana seems to be all over him, Vanderbilt is also interested, and Zyl, at 20, has near-term pro aspirations, and is viewed maybe 50-50 to play college hoops.
But gotta like the Staff looking far and wide to fill a critical spot.

Below is a linked 24/7 story regarding Austin Van Zyl, originally from Ontario Canada (calling Aubie)
———-
Austin Van Zyl has taken an interesting path in his basketball development, and now playing for Indiana is a possibility.

Originally from Oakville, Ontario, near Toronto, Canada, the 6-foot-5 point guard spent his sophomore season at Huntington (W. Va.) Prep before playing the past two seasons in Monaco, France, with the idea of challenging himself against older players.

Moose had this possibility early this morning.

I have heard there could be a recruit visit this week, but not sure who. Obviously Austin V would be a good one, but time will tell.

I'm thoroughly confused.
This kid plays in Europe and still has NCAA eligibility?
And this has to do with DeMeo how?

Original post by Chicago noted he was just followed by DeMeo on Twitter. Eligibility may not be an issue because Indiana was possibly pursuing him. This may or may not amount to anything. Letting it play out seems prudent.

Don't know how exactly, except it's the deal he struck with the Club.
Monaco spotted him playing for South Africa at an Adidas Nation camp. He attends class during the day.
DeMeo is following Van Zyl as well as the Club and seems to have FIBA basketball contacts.

I don’t know all the details but players can play pro in Europe but retain NCAA eligibility if they are paid nothing but living expenses. UConn women recently signed two such players, one from Poland who will play next year and one from Croatia, who will come for the 20-21 season.

Hometown is listed as New York, I wonder if he has any relatives in area. Lol
Hopefully, that's a good sign.
