Welcome Nick Rutherford !
St. John’s 2019-20 roster, by class
Seniors: Mustapha Heron (G), Nick Rutherford (G)

Juniors: LJ Figueroa (G/F), Eli Wright (G), Damien Sears (F)

Sophomores: Greg Williams Jr. (G), Josh Roberts (F), Marcellus Earlington (F), David Caraher (F), Ian Steere (F)

Freshmen: Johnathan McGriff (PG), Julian Champagnie (F)
Do you have any idea on what the ultimate goal is for Steere re eligibility? Seems like a few different possible outcomes with worst case being a second semester sophomore when he suits up and best case being eligible game one this year as a redshirt freshmen, the latter seemingly rather unlikely.

Don’t know if staff would rather him be immediately eligible but as a sophomore, or perhaps wait till second semester as a freshmen. Sorry Paultz and sorry Nick, welcome to sju!

That's good class balance on this roster Paultz. Another thing we haven't seen with any consistency here in a while. Excellent pick up with Rutherford. Let's get that last serviceable front court player and we can be an NCAA bubble team this year. As it stands now, Andersen can have sustain his streak of winning seasons with this roster.

Btw, as Moose has noted, assuming academic progress, Eli Wright would be eligible for grad transfer status after coming season. Hope he plays well and loves new system, but just pointing this out.

True. No reason to worry about it at this point. He’s a wing and we can find plenty of those. In addition I can see LJ Figueroa not sticking around after this season as well whether it be as a pro or transfer. We will certainly be rebuilding which is why 2020 becomes a very, very important class to land some real talent and rebuild our core with some higher ranked kids.

Given Cragg's presence in the StJ's Athletic Administration I have more confidence about St. John's position in NCAA dealings.

All well and good. But a better reason would be if there was evidence of it happening before. He played 1 game and transferred. Has anyone played so few games in a semester, transferred, sat out 1 semester only and played the following semester.

I was just reading about Steere. He seems really wishy washy.

He played for 4 different high schools, committed to Creighton, backed out of commitment, committed to NC State, played 1 game for them, took a leave from the team and went home a few days, then came back and requested a transfer.

I could see NCAA looking at all that and denying a waiver, doesn't really seem like he has a legit reason to get approved for a waiver, seems like things just didn't go his way and he left.

As Fordham has always said. The more realistic question is does Steere get his 1st year back. I don't see how he plays before Mid-Dec. But does NCAA chalk up the 1 game appearance and give him that full year back eligibility wise

Agreed. He is going to sit out the first semester, the waiver will be whether or not he will have his freshman eligibility restored.

If he's going to lose a year of eligibility, he/we should fight for sitting one game to match the one he played last year, and playing rest of year.

His stats aren't good (even in a mediocre conference), but we obviously have some very good scorers like Heron and LJ. Since he is a pass first guard, he should fit in nicely with the team. Not many PGs will be able to score better than Heron or LJ, and given their pro aspirations (desire to score), the team should have some nice chemistry. Also, Nick's FT % (78%) will translate without issue. That's very important for end of game situations when he's fouled.

Overall, not very exciting but given the options he looks to be a smart pickup. He's a logical addition.
Nice pickup...pretty big guard known for defense and will distribute. Not known for scoring and has high 20's 3PT%, but that's fine if he can get the ball to Fig and Heron.
Provided they haven't fouled out. Their staying out of foul trouble will be crucial this year.

Mike Dixon's stats were fantastic but I think Rutherford will translate better to Big East. Short, young scoring guard vs mature PG with decent size. We don't need a scorer here. I think he checks off each of the primary qualities that I wanted to see:
1) maturity to help stabilize a major transition year.
2) strong defender
3) chemistry builder to feature the two major talents on the team in Fig/Heron.

I have no idea how Rutherford will fit in but having role players, having guys willing to play defense, willing to do the dirty work, is not a bad thing. We played last year with 5 guys looking to score and how did that work out?

And even if he does hopefully MA is so successful and recruiting at a different level in 3 years. Could recruit over a lot of the underclassmen on this roster IMVHO. Don't get me wrong, there's no one I don't like on this team and I think the staff have done a good job in a short time, just a lot of guys that probably shouldn't be BE starters.

They've done the best that could be expected thus far given timing and available players. This is a thoughtful, staged rebuild. We are bringing in a certain kind of kid. Nothing wrong with installing the plumbing and insulation before going shopping for the master bathroom jacuzzi.

A non sexy but very important piece of the puzzle for next season. A very good defender, tough, hard nosed pg who gets in the lane. As opposed to grabbing random pieces this staff understands that you need to have a style of play, a system , and are going after players that fit in with what they want to do. Makes me feel much better about next season. I truly like that the staff did not panic and grab the first to want to come aboard but rather waited until they got the missing piece required.
Patience is a virtue.
If Heron and Figgy can average 35 points a game together which is very possible and all 10 other players can average 4 ppg we can be in good shape next season.
I think just as important is developing a legitimate 3rd option who’s at least a threat to get double digits on occasion. Whether it’s Wright, Williams, or a front court player, Rutherford should help keeping them in the right position and getting them the ball.
Have to think Wright is the wild card.
