I’m not suggesting that CMA won’t succeed. I I just haven’t seen anything thus far to get terribly excited about. As Monte points out, CMA is filling out our roster much as Mullin did following Lavin’s tenure.

In the past ten years, we’ve hired three coaches. At the outset of each hire, the board is filled with unbridled optimism. I recall the popular refrains “In Lavin we trust” and “Chris is going to bring his incredible work ethic to recruiting and hit every gym in the five boroughs.”

Call me a healthy skeptic, but I’ll reserve praise until the staff accomplished something. Nothing wrong with filling the roster with two and three star kids at this point — there is likely no other option — but in my estimation, this is not anything to get excited about.

Very fair post Boo. As with most sports related discussions, perspective is everything. We have posters who are pessimists by nature, optimists by nature and those who fall in between, realists if you will. I'd put you in the latter category. I admittedly am an optimist (still believe I'll live to see my Knicks win another title lol) and while I wasn't posting when either Lavin or Mullin were hired I am the first to admit I was enthusiastic supporters of both during their early years. All three perspectives are generally defensible so long as they are accompanied by arguments with some basis in fact which is more often than not the case here.

In CMA's case, the fact that we all were expecting the program to really go down the tubes before our AD pulled a miracle save has no doubt contributed to the level of optimism, along with seeing a coach who actually pays attention to recruiting and really seems to be embracing New York.
MA gets the benefit of the doubt from me until he proves otherwise. He does have a solid track record but also the recruits we have gotten so far are only to fill out late in the game and don't appear to be BE caliber but we all hope they overachieve here of course. The effort has been evident and it appears him and staff are drama free so far so these are two positives off the bat. Obviously LJ, Heron, or not we are not going to be good next year. I think we may lose to some bad teams like we did in Mullin's first year and we may occasionally shock people with a win or two that was totally unexpected. The real key is the 2020 and 2021 recruiting classes. Those will be the ones he needs to get a solid foundation of at least 3*'s and occasional 4's.
Fair to say 2020 & 2021 are crucial recruiting years

I think the sweet spot for us should be 4 star recruits making up a balanced roster w depth. Mullin had nicely ranked players, but had incomplete rosters w no depth. It’s May , the best recruits are just about gone . CMA has to do the best he can w what is left. This is where his experience comes in looking for underrated, tough kids who fit his system and our needs in completing a roster.

To Mr. Sears and Mr. McGriff,

The amount of Mullin Apologists/family members and obvious SJU program haters on here is pathetic. Looking forward to watching both of you and the recruits to come shut all of their mouths pretty quickly.

Once again, Welcome aboard gentlemen!

Yep. Actually the same type of kids that Norm brought in, but couldn’t coach them as we know. If Norm could bring those kids in, with his limited resources and coming off the worst point in SJU history, then certainly CMA can bring that level of talent(4 star/top 150) in here consistently. If he does, we’ll have a winning program again.

Actually, I think MA has shown he can win with a system, depth and 3 stars by and large. If we get the occasional 4 or god forbid 5*, that's awesome. But, I think we as a fan base are not used to a coach that has a defined style and system of play that can utilize 3* recruits in specific roles to their ability. We (or I) always lamented the teams that seemed to have these no name kids who could shoot the hell out of the ball or rebound like a fiend and wonder why we couldn't get them.

I am very interested in seeing if this team building approach with a defined system, depth, balanced roster, etc. can work.

We've basically failed for 2 decades trying to recruit the big star guys and athletes. I want to see us play as a team with basketball players who play their roles on a team with depth and players at each position etc.

Let's go.

An occasional 4-star? Nah, we should be able to get mostly 4-star kids on a routine basis. You know 4-star kids are normally around the top 30-100. We've always been capable of getting those players, so it shouldn't stop now.

Maybe, landing the "occasional" 5-star player should be on the menu, but we need to consistently build the roster with 4-star personnel, sprinkle in some 3-star kids, and periodically with 5-star kids. I consider high-level JUCO players ala Figueroa to be 4-star kids, and I'm sure Anderson and staff are also capable of landing those type of players as well.

So far CMA has recruited a point guard and a banger.
We've had neither for years.
I liked our team last year. But good god, it was essentially five guys who played two positions: 2G and SF.

PG: McGriff
2G: Heron, Williams, Wright
SF: LJ, Carahar (sic)
C/PF: Steere, Roberts, Earlington, Sears

Of course I agree, just saying that maybe we've come to have a skewed view of what it takes to win.

If there are only 70 or 100 4 stars, then it is probably not reasonable to think we could build a team with all 4*s with all the teams vying for their services. But, yes a healthy dose of 4 stars and 3s would work I think with a functional staff and a rational scheme.

(I would point out that a lot of our top tier by *s talent of late (Ponds, Heron, Jordan etc) were sort of by default.)

Your numbers are skewed because you're looking at buidling a team of 4-star personnel over a course of a year (although, Lavin basically did it in his first, full-recruiting cycle), while I was referencing building over the duration.

So, yes you can build your program with all or majority 4-star rated kids.

No, I understood that, but that still around 400-450 4*s and 5's over 4 years and if you look at the top 75 teams, that's like 900 spots (assuming they all stay 4 years, which they don't). And, obviously, they're not all evenly distributed.

Anyway, I agree with your basic point, but I see that CM has succeed in a major conference with a different approach. Hoping it woks here..

Just for the record, I have seen no "unbridled optimism" from any poster here. Just positive hope. Most of us have been around the block and back and know that while we wish well for the school and program, this is a hard job ahead.

There was very little risk in signing Sears and McGriff. McGriff is a 3 star freshman point guard that is small but has talent. Hopefully he will be a solid four year player. Sears is a JUCO that will hopefully grab us rebounds and some easy baskets. As a JUCO Sears only has two year of eligibility which reduces the downside risk. I am hoping that CMA will be cautious signing more Freshman unless he has a great feeling about them. I would prefer JUCO and Grad Students this year and put the main focus on 2020 and 2021 where we aren't as far behind.

You're not wrong.
But
I'm also willing to give a coach who's never had a losing season in over fifteen seasons the benefit of the doubt that he will bring in players that fit what he likes to do and not try to fit squares into circular holes.

Glad to see CMA filling out the roster. We're going to need depth, especially with 40 MOH. Too often a 4* or 5* player really dropped down in rating to 3* or 4* due to too much time in the game. Fresh legs make a huge difference.

I’m not about to start knocking CMA, but let me just say this: I have a very hard time believing that after he came back to Arkansas, cleaned up mess left behind by the previous coach, supposedly got the program back on track, that he the got fired because a few members of the BOT didn’t like him? Because of his connection to NR? Then why would they have hired him in the first place? Not buying it.I’ve read a lot of stuff on the Arkansas board and the local papers. The vast majority of those people thought/think the world of him as a person, but felt that it was time to move on. I saw very very few people defend CMA as a coach, and even fewer people who were sorry to see him go. That says a lot to me. As I’ve said before, no one knows a coach like the fan base.
Its not that far fetched. Long left as AD new guy came in. Gave CMA 2 years and wanted his own guy in there. Thought he could make a run at Beard who was busy getting to the Final Four. Thought his connection with Sampson would work and Sampson played him for extension. Add in the Board factor and he had backing.

Google a kid named Mason Jones. He was an unranked JUCO kid, that only had 1 offer and that was to University of Central Arkansas in Southland conference this time last year. He took a visit to Arkansas, and nobody knew who he was at the time, CMA offered him and he ended up averaging 14 PPG and made up one-half of the best three point shooting duo in Arkansas history.

When you look at recruits CMA brings in, you can't pay attention to the stars, most of the kids he gets will be 3-star and low 4-star ranked kids. Some of the JUCO kids they land may not even be ranked on JUCO sites. However, the kids he gets they have spent time evaluating and know that they will fit his system and play hard. You don't go 17 years without ever having a losing season without knowing how to get kids that fit what you're doing. And I'm not saying that to come off like a CMA homer, there will be some recruits he misses on, but if a kid has a hard worker mentality and some talent in them, the staff will get it out of them, these 2 guys that they have landed so far, look like they have that mentality and fit what he wants to do, you also have to factor in that it's May, I've seen schools take less impressive guys this time of year
MP I am a bottom line kind of guy. If CMA can consistently have us a top 25 team and consistently get us to the big dance, then I will consider him a successful coach. That's where I feel this program should be and deserves to be. If not, then I won't. Others may set the bar lower. Some here feel that CMA's time at Arkansas was a successful one. Based on my aforementioned criteria, I do not. It's nothing personal, and it's subjective. 3 tourney teams in the last 8 years, and 2 of those years with appearances in the top 25, is not my idea of success. Like I said I'm a bottom line kind of guy. And again, everyone measure success differently. CMA is not going to get our program back to where it belongs by recruiting the same way he did at Arkansas. He's going to have to change his approach and expect he will. He's now running the top college basketball program in the greatest city in the world and in the most fertile recruiting grounds(NYC and NJ) in the country. Un-ranked or low-ranked JC kids and top 300 kids aren't going to get us back to being a consistent top 25/tourney team. It ain't gonna happen. For every unranked JC kid, like Jones, who makes it big, there are countless others who do nothing. For every top 300 kid who makes an impact at this level, there are dozens more who can't play at this level. For CMA to be successful here, by my estimation, he's going to need to bring in mostly top 75-150 high school kids, highly ranked JC kids, a transfer here and there, and then back fill with lower ranked kids. Maybe he'll grab the occasional 5 star kid and maybe he'll occasionally grab a lower ranked kid, like Jones, who will blow up. He should have no problem getting decent talent here. Talent that should have us at or near the top of The Big East every year. As I've said before, right now he gets a pass on anyone that he brings in for next year. I welcome the 2 young men he brought in with open arms. But unlike others on this board, I'm not buying that CMA has any more insight in to the talents of these 2 young men than all the other D1 coaches around or all the recruiting gurus. So I will seriously temper expectations with these young men, and hope to be pleasantly surprised.
There's no secret formula for success:recruit a balanced and talented(enough) roster, coach them well, and you will have a consistently successful program here. Like the last 6 coaches who have been here, CMA has my full support. I like what I've seen so far, but then again I liked what I saw from all of the last 6 coaches when they first arrived. So ultimately, time will tell.
There's a lot to digest in that post, I won't get into everything, but I will say this.

When people say CMA didn't have success at Arkansas and only went to tournament 3 years out of 8 years, most of the time people don't know the whole story. CMA took over an Arkansas program that was in APR trouble and had a bad culture of kids cheating on tests, getting kicked out of school, the roster was almost completely different every year. On top of that Arkansas was behind in facilities, and was the only school in the SEC at the time that didn't even have a practice facility. The AD that hired CMA (Jeff Long), said himself he wouldn't even count CMA's first three years against him because he knew it would take at least that to rebuild the program, which he did and left the program in the best shape it's been in for almost 20 years. He's had the 3rd best record in the SEC during his 8 years only behind Kentucky and Florida.

Just to put things in perspective on how bad the program looked before CMA got there, Dana Altman, in the coaching search before CMA was hired, took the Arkansas job, got on campus, did a press conference, then got a chance to look at the situation he inherited and he quit the next day. That's how bad the program looked, if you can find another program that was looking so bad a coach took the job, got on campus and seen what he inherited, and quit the next day, I'd like to hear about it.

CMA was fired at Arkansas simply because he didn't fit into the new AD's plans and there was a BOT member and some good ole boys who had been trying to push CMA out from day 1 because they never liked him because of how things went down with his mentor Nolan Richardson. They seen this down year with a new AD and pounced on the opportunity. Any unbiased fan that looked at the Arkansas situation and seen what CMA did, especially when more than half the conference was cheating and buying players, knows he did a great job rebuilding and making Arkansas an attractive job again.

Also, as far as players, CMA and staff hit on more guys than they miss. We've had one of the top big men in the conference almost every year CMA was there at Arkansas. 1 was a first round pick, and another is set to be a first round pick this year. 2 transfers that CMA brought in played in the NBA this year, one on a 10 day contract the other was a JUCO player on a 2-way contract. He's also had other JUCO players have 10 day contracts, and one in Jaylen Barford that is close. He'll get players here that won't be an issue, he'll get some star players as he did at Arkansas, my point I was making that the majority of the roster when you're playing 11-12 guys will be 3 / low 4 star guys that buy into that system and play hard. That's what makes his system work.
I’m not about to start knocking CMA, but let me just say this: I have a very hard time believing that after he came back to Arkansas, cleaned up mess left behind by the previous coach, supposedly got the program back on track, that he the got fired because a few members of the BOT didn’t like him? Monte, never underestimate the durability of vendetta pathology in the state where I lived as a boy. The example I know best is that at least some of the Paula Jones story was misinformation planted by folks connected to the Faubus segregationist crowd going all the way back to the 60's and then to when Clinton was governor. May be that the memories are so long because there is not much else to do.

If I said anything in my post about the condition of the program before CMA arrived that was factually incorrect, please feel free to correct me. All the information I said about Dana Altman taking the job for a day, the players getting kicked out of school, heavy roster turnover, APR problems, all of that can be easily googled and verified. I didn't exaggerate or add anything to it.

As far as your question on why they hired CMA in the first place when a BOT did not want him and other other people didn't want him as well. It's pretty simple Jeff Long, the AD that got ran out of town, was the person that hired him he wasn't an Arkansas person and he wasn't around during Nolan's tenure. Even though CMA was considered a home run hire by most outside people there was still some with influence at Arkansas that didn't want him hired because of his connection to Nolan and have been trying to run him out since day 1. I know this because I live around these people and hear it all the time. Google Nolan Richardson and Arkansas and everything he went through down here. I also wasn't exaggerating in a post a while ago when I said they killed his farm animals down here and was calling him with death threats, when he had a down season. Nolan Richardson is in every basketball HOF, and it took Arkansas 20+ years to name the court after him and still was met with backlash from certain people.

You're free to "buy" what you want to buy and listen to who you want to. I'm just sharing what I know and the actual facts. Kinda funny that you read a few message board posts and a newspaper article and know more about the UofA than someone that literally lives about a mile and a half away. And I'll say this again, if anything I said above is factually incorrect please feel free to correct it with the source. I know a lot of people who were upset about the firing, I can't tell you how many facebook and twitter conversations I seen around the time. You can click on CMA's departure speech he posted on twitter and see all the support he had.
