Virginia Game

Glad season is over.. Kids played hard just not a good team. Team showed what they are and where they are as a team. Will coaches make the better and more competitive next year and improve overall program? Time will tell.

Certainly a disappointing season in the way we lost so many games down the stretch and non competitive in so many games. Can GG, Hooper and Shanchez help this team improve? Hope so.. Marco and Amir certainly are weak players right now for D1 players. Amir, pitch your heart out bud, it just ain't working in bball. Marco can't compete at this level it's clear.. If they want to stay on the team fine, but they won't see playing time if I was coach.

Thank you players and coaches for all of your efforts.

Hooper is better than Bourgault

Have you ever seen Hooper play?

If not then how can you say he is better than anyone?

If you have seen Hooper play then what were your impressions?

Thanks.

You've asked me that a couple of times when I've stated such, and in those cases I had seen said player. Most cases, I tend to not make such a comment on a player that I've yet to see (other than some game clips). But I'm going against my usual grain this time, based on I trust the basketball acumen of the person who told me.

For starters, it seems Hooper's shooting is much better than Bourgault's. Which, we sorely lack. Hence, the reason I was told he should be able to give us between 10-15 minutes, per outing.

Speaking of shady refs, look at the calls in the Iowa State game, they got robbed again just like the Kansas games. Loved the Iowa St. team and they can sure shoot, unlike another team I love.

Anyone willing to watch this game over? I didn't think so. Embarrassing performance by players and coaches. Pointer has no IQ , committing his third foul at halfcourt before halftime. And he picks up his fourth foul chasing Anderson in an open court. I cringed seeing us start the game in a zone defense, pitiful and listless. As usual the middle was wide open for easy layups. As for our putrid offense, Wittenburg was correct, it was stagnet. What decent coach has Obekpa set a screen for Greene out by halfcourt ? Unbelievable. Still believe Lavin is a poor coach.

Max has a ton of videos on line from games from California to Brewster. In comparison, I would say that Max is a pure shooter, with a quick release and is quicker than Marco. I agree with Simlpyred, Marco has turned into a
Bust! I hope he loves Paris in the Springtime because if he gets any burn next year it may be after the walk ons.
Max's basketball IQ also may be much higher since Marco has been unable to get into any offensive flow without the ball. With the ball he is a disaster.

There needs to be some metamorphosis to this team in the off season. I have not witnessed anything in this game nor the previous 10 that suggest we will be really good next year. We know what D Lo is and Sanchez is supposed to be good, but we still suffer at the guard position. It is hard to win without very good guard play. Trust me, I'm a guard. Hope Lavin and company will get these guys ready and bring in some chemistry guys.

BINGO!!!
You need good, smart guards to win at this level
Many NCAA teams have been very successful with 3 or 4 guards on the floor and only 1-2 forwards
We desperately need a true PG whose primary function is to run the team and distribute the ball
We don't have anyone like that on our current roster. I hoped that Branch would be that guy. He has been a major disappointment.
We have guys on our roster that are not BE caliber players (Bourgault and Balamou immediately come to mind)
Lavin ia a very good recruiter, a great PR guy and wonderful "face" for the program - certainly an upgrade over Roberts
However, the longer he is here, the more you see that the "whispers" that he is not a good coach have some real validity

MJD, maybe you should read other's comments that question the same areas as I do.. But, then again, you seem more interested in being a self proclaimed commentator and addressing my posts. IS IT YOUR CRUSADE?

I remember you from other Boards and you were the same type attacker you still are.

Don't read my posts.. If you see the JJ site, many posters there see the team in much the same light as I do.

I posted in November that this team looked lost and dysfunctional on the Court.. Little has changed for the positive.

Why don't you concentrate on posting about basketball performances and not other people's comments.

I rarely see you make any comments except to take exception with someone else's comments. Is that all you got?

What boards do you remember me from other than JJ? Any poster that you claimed I "attacked" was eventually banned. Please elaborate on the others.... I'll be waiting. Besides, I don't ever recall seeing your screenname on JJ. Who are you over there?

The posters from JJ? LOL The same 4 or 5 posters who always tend to mope about something.... Okay.

I do post about basketball. Go look through my posting history.

I'm very aware of the limitations of the team and staff. Just because I don't post it game after game doesn't make me any less aware. Some of y'all (particularly, you in your verbose fashion) feel like the same stuff has to be stated game after game and week after week. Eventually, it comes off as moping. Since you wanna bring up posters from JJ.... Choz stated my latter thoughts about a week or so ago. Someone who can deliver a message without it always coming off as whining.

I'll stop here, as I might be lecturing too much.

For whatever reason the majority of the posters on this board all believe that they are gods gift (not the player) to basketball, and somehow know everything there is to know about the game of basketball, or at least seem to know ALOT more than our current coaching staff. I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but this staff has probably forgotten more about the game of basketball than any of us will ever know.

People claim that they are 'fans' of this program, but I strongly question if they even know what being a fan means. A month ago people were calling for Phil Green to be benched because he was "simply just not a Big East caliber type player", but after today's game they love how he has progressed and how he is a really solid player for us. After the St Joes game this team overall showed alot of heart and potential and we all loved them, but after today some are saying that we just should basically get rid of everybody (staff and players) and start over.

Why in the world would any recruit ever want to come play for this university? If you do something good, no one ever really makes a big deal of it, but the moment you screw up or don't play the way the 'basketball experts' of this board want you to, you are simply just not good enough and need to be replaced asap.

This board is just absolutely ridiculous, and I would even go as far as to say somewhat embarrassing.....

If Hooper is as you say, better then Marco, why didn't he get any burn at Harvard? While I myself only saw him in limited action at the Red White game and was not impressed, a coaching friend of mine who has seen him was surprised that he would come to St. Johns as he thought he had even less mobility then Marco. I guess we will find out next season. And in terms of Marco, I don't think he was a bust, I think he came to the wrong program. He needed a more structured style of play that would have had offensive sets for him to be successful, not a helter skelter offense that coach Lavin employs.

I agree with almost all you said. The thing is we are fans (short for fanatics right?). If you visit other boards you would hear and read the same things from fans of teams with much more success then we have had. Look what just happened to the UCLA coach. I am hopeful that next year is a breakout year for this team. If it is not it could effect our recruiting in a crucial year for our future growth.

Once again, do you know the reason why he wasn't playing? There could've been other factors at play.

If next year is not a "breakout year" (minimally, a bid in the NCAA tournament), Lavin should be fired

It's funny, I went on the Cuse site and there were fans complaining about his lack of results and calling for him to be canned. The only place you don't find much negativity is on Providence's boards. They are the greatest program in the world and other schools (especially us) must be cheating if we beat them out for a recruit.

The last game of the season was basically a summary of the last 10 games, where SJ managed to win just 2 games. Horrible shooting, no interior defense and the sad fact that we were left with the worst backcourt in recent memory for a post season game.
History will show David Lipscomb and Jamal White played a combined 18 minutes and contributed 0 points and 0 assists.  There are two assumptions that can be made from those 18 wasted minutes: Jamal Branch was not 100% and was playing hurt (not from appearances) or Steve Lavin has given up on Branch as the point guard of the future. Either way, had it not been for some Phil Greene street ball moves our backcourt would have shot close to zero percent against a very young Virginia backcourt.  The "youth" excuse" was officially buried with this loss.
The game was a statistical nightmare for SJ.  We were our usual disorganized wet mess but what was astonishing was the fact that SJ took 18 more shots (62-44) but managed to lose by that many points!
As for youth, it was all on Virginia's side and a sober reminder of the exaggertion we have been fed by our coach.  The Virginia frosh scored 46 points-----4 less than our entire team!
Our entire team had 7 assists to Virginia's 19.  We shot 12% from three and what may be an NIT record 4 air balls.
I do not intend to diminish Virginia's win at home and they obviously should have been an NCAA team but comparing the two teams is basically comparing a disciplined and good shooting team in the Cavaliers to a discombobulated mess that is St. John's.  The basketball IQ of the two teams could not be further apart.  The highlight of that IQ disparity occurred in the first 30 seconds of the second half: Dom Pointer, saddled with 3 fouls, mugs a Virginia player for his 4th------19+ minutes left in the game.
There was nothing to take away from this loss other than Lavin needs to make a couple of personnel changes and he better land Raysheed Jordan or we will continue our history of losing coaches because they failed to sign a D1 point guard that could lead the team.
Whoever is in charge of evaluating the guard prospects needs to go!

bingo. thats all he does is pick fight with people and attack people comments. i guess he feel like some kind of god on here when in reality he is nothing more then a troll . lol

You went on an attack, without merit, on me, and then had the nerve to play the victim (about a month ago). Get real! You also continue to discredit yourself (like you can do that much more) by calling me a troll.

Look at what you've typed in this thread alone.... Targeting me, while not saying anything worthwhile about hoops. LOL Pot meet kettle.

So, what have you brought to the board, other than being an ignorant flamer and board spammer?
