About the only thing I don't like about the new big east is that I don't hate any of the other schools. I don't even hate the Hoyas in the new league. ...

Give us time -- the hatred will eventually come to the surface. I don't necessarily hate Seton Hall, but I sure do dislike them ... very, very much.

Nova winning the championship gave our conference legitimacy no matter what we all thought about our conference.

It's up to us to handle our own resurrection and get to bragging status

This league is on the same mission to prove that they are as good and better than the mega football conferences.

Agree here. There's a sense of comraderie we have in this conference that is a different vibe than before. More "us vs the world type thing. That said, I'm still not the biggest Hall fan in the world, and Mullin and Cooley going at it might be able to add some spice. I'm enjoying the league very much right now though. I think we are only going to get better overall. I'd still love to see Uconn drop football some day and join as full member. Until that day comes, no real interest with football.

Most hated in this version of the Big East are def Hall & Providence. Willard is a rat and Cooley is a goon. They also have the more obnoxious fans that invade my section at MSG.

Although the Nova fans this year had some awesomely bad quotes'

"Man a lot of St Johns red here today"

"Where is the Nova student section?"

I want to beat them every time we play but beyond that I find myself rooting for Nova. This conference has been exceptional since realignment but Nova as a top 5-10 team nationally (two #2 seeds and a #1 last three years) gives the Creightons and Xaviers and Butlers (or Providence and Seton Hall recently) and thus the conference more viability. Without Nova's pedigree as a cornerstone the conference wouldn't have as much "it" factor even if the team performance and conference metrics were just as good as they have been. Especially with Georgetown taking a step back the last few years we need Nova and Jay Wright to keep doing what they have been.

Hatred will come once we become great again and we knock off teams who are great as well.

I am for one who enjoys hard core rivalries and hopefully that can form in the next few years.

I don't have that problem

Would like to see us make Nova a perimeter team to the greatest extent possible tomorrow. Know they have 4 guys who shoot it well from 3 and are 37.5% as a team. But they are shooting almost 59% as a team from 2 and have 4 starters over 50% from the field overall (49.3% as a team).

As we saw in the Garden this is largely a product of them spreading you out, elite ball movement, and once they have you chasing getting dribble pen for dropoffs or kickouts for open 3s.

Play sagging man prioritizing paint protection and mix in a little zone. Hart, Jenkins, and Brunson pump fake almost every time they catch the ball to draw contact or drive by to create. Don't bite and let them launch. Would much rather have them shooting 3s without having broken down the defense first, because they'll typically get even better looks from 3 once they've done so.

Making them a perimeter team can also help keep them from getting into the rhythms they can get in when they get the inside out action they are looking for. They space the floor, draw a crowd on penetration and patiently find open man about as well as any team I've seen this season. Would like to see us try to make them beat us doing something else.

Thank you Simply Red for allowing that my anti-Philly screed was not in Beast's words "idiotic". Play nice in the sandbox, Beast.

Thank you Paul for your words about Beast's waxing poetic of all things Main Line. I understand why he feels that way, though.

Philly is a pretty lousy city. Obnoxious fans undeniably. Maybe only a tad worse than Boston or NY, but definitely worse.

Philly and its environs certainly embrace Villanova and a lot of sons and daughters of well-to-do suburban Philadelphians do attend Villanova, along with many students from NJ (right next door in southern Jersey), NY and CT. NJ's biggest export is college students.

When on the southern NJ seashore one sees tons of Nova flags waving outside the expensive homes in Avalon, Stone Harbor, etc., the Philly version of the Hamptons.

Over the years, at Garden games, I've noticed a level of entitlement among their alum, not drunk and obnoxious, because they can hold their liquor.

I desperately want us to reach their level of success, and can't stand when they take over the Garden, that's all. Nothing personal toward Wright and nothing at all personal to the mothers and fathers of Villanova students who themselves attended St. John's.

P.S. As a big Big East supporter, I root for Nova and all Big East teams when they are not playing St. John's and was very happy when they won the whole thing last year affirming the Big East's prominence. Heck, I still root for the original former BE members when they are playing non-Big East schools (except for turncoat BC).

If we can't fill MSG, I'd rather have Novas of the world bring a crowd. Half empty arena is not appealing. Rather than worry about this stuff, in simplest terms, St. John's getting consistently good will cure this. I personally don't need to "hate" any of our competitors to enjoy this league, one of few balanced conferences in country.

For the most part, UCONN and Syracuse fans had loud parties in the Garden when our inferior SJU teams were taking a beating. Nothing worse than a visiting crowd being overly loud when a bad SJU team is taking a beating. I don't think Nova is the worst offender or even rises to that level of boorishness. I don't mind a raucous opposing crowd in a nip and tuck game, but both UCONN and Syracuse fans are asses about it.

That being said, beating Nova right now would be a crowning moment of our ascent. It would be incredibly premature if that happened tomorrow, but over the next few years, we will know the program has arrived when we beat them at home or away.

Hate Nova if you want but they're the school that really propped up the new Big East when we really needed that boost. Especially with us and Georgetown not living up expectations right now.

I did refer to the comment as idiotic and not you - no offense to you.

Stay away from the Jersey Shore, and only go swimming to boost your immune system.

Just think about it - all those flag waving Villanovans help the school raise $620 million, surpassing their goal 17 months ahead of schedule and counting. Imagine what SJU could do with Nova's donor base?

I do not hate Nova, I am saying Nova peoplehave taken their fandom to a whole new level and it is borderline unbearable. It would be finally nice to beat them at some point. They were loving how MSG is was selling their apparel and lighting up the arena outside in their colors after the win. Nonstop ripping us.

Also, As much as I hated Syracuse and UConn that environment was outstanding especially when we won.

I remember 2001 Overtime win vs Uconn at MSG on a Saturday night. Fights galore in the stands, Calhoun tossed that was fun. Need to get some heated rivalries back.

Nova's a Philly team, where they boo opposing football players when they lay injured and motionless on the field and where they throw ice balls at Santa.

Let's pay them back for their win over us at the Garden.

It's about time.

Philadelphia, a city with no redeeming values.

That's idiotic. All of the references you cited are about Philly sports teams, not Nova. A huge chunk of Nova kids are NY, NJ, and CT kids, many kids of SJU alums, including SJU board memebers. Many root for SJU when not rooting for Nova.

The Nova kids whose parents are SJU alums (and I know quite a few) are not the arrogant ones that I am referring to.

Jay Wright speaks to the entire Freshman class during orientation each year. One of the things he tells them is from that moment on, they aren't just VIllanova students, they ARE Villanova and part of Nova Nation. HE reminds them that from that moment on they are connected as part of a community to every single person who ever went to Villanova. Then he tells them that every single thing they do from that moment on, either on campus or off, in their own home town or in Radnor or Wayne or King of Prussia, reflects not only on them, but the Villanova community as a whole. He reminds them that being part of this great community comes with a lot of responsibility to conduct yourself as a Villanovan.

During senior year he speaks to the entire graduating class at the senior breakfast. He reminds them of that responsibility and thanks them for upholding their end of the deal to make NovaNation and Villanova bigger and better than ever.

While I don't doubt that there are arrogant asses who annoy you at games and elsewhere, Jay Wright does more than perhaps any other coach in America to connect to students and encourage them to behave with class and dignity.

I really hope Chris Mullin will do the same stuff for us very soon in connecting with students the same way.

I do not have a problem with Jay Wright. Made a good impression on me back when i first met him while he was at Hofstra and nothing he has done since has changed my opinion. He has nothing to do with the fans I am refeng to.

I also can't root for any team from Boston or any part of New England..

Philly fans are the worst. Not only are they bad, they like to think they have superior knowledge on sports in general. They don't.

Jay Wright is a great guy, went to his high school team camp at Hofstra, and helped my family member get into Nova. Nothing but praise.........

Hate Nova if you want but they're the school that really propped up the new Big East when we really needed that boost. Especially with us and Georgetown not living up expectations right now.

Totally agree.

Agree. I don't hate Nova (I save that for UConn and Cuse).

And I root for BE teams out of Conference or in the case of Providence, I don't root against them (I just can't bring myself to root for any team from New England).

Maybe but they did have the best pretzels ever. Of course that was years ago when my travel teams played in the Bustleton Basketball Tournament.

As far as Mullin and Cooley are concerned I am looking forward to our last game at the garden against the Friars, especially if it means we have a chance to get in the NIT.
