definitely see potential in Ellison

As founder of the Ellison fan club I thank you for the compliment

i definitely spoke too soon regarding ellison. he has stepped up for the team over the last few games. shot needs a lot of work, but he drives hard to the net. i really like what i'm seeing out of him.

as for mussini, i don't know what is going on. kid has done a complete 180. he looks lost on the court and you can clearly see his confidence is just not there anymore. could be that he hit a wall, but it's very concerning to me.

Physically, you can see how the long minutes he has played has affected his body. He is missing wide open threes, which didn't happen early in the schedule. What Mussini needs is 3 months of no basketball and meals loaded with calories, followed by strength training. I have no doubt he will make some huge shots for us over the next few years.

While effort does count for something the final score is very deceiving. Every time we crept to within striking distance our possessions were horrible examples of competitive ball. Bad shot selection, out of control charges to the hoops, forced shots, turnovers, and inability to make 5 foot shots characterized those possessions. Definitely a lack of talent but also not a sign of a well coached team. credit to our staff for getting these guys to bust it but on the other hand the goal of a well coached team is getting a good look when it counts and our guys dont do that often enough.

Poor shot selection at the end of a very close game is also the sign of :
1 A very young team
2 A very inexperienced team
3 A team without a leader
4 A team without a point guard
5 A team without a go to guy
6 A team dying for a win / upset
7 A team trying to hard
8 A team without a proven scorer.

You can say they are not a well coached team and perhaps you are correct. I see a rag tag group thrown together at the last minute that only lost by 10 to the number 1 team in the country on the road that got hosed by the refs with all of the above factors listed and our best player Sima injured.
Looking in seems like the did a very good job notwithstanding the huge discrepancy in talent and experience.
Seems to me like they are well coached.

As many posters have noted, Mussini just got worn down. Hopefully playing off the ball in complementary role like the Brady Heslips of the world will work for him next season. Very rarely do freshman guards come in at this level & do very well, let alone someone as frail & inexperienced at PG as Mussini. My hope is all the young kids come back next year stronger, more skilled & prepared to once again go against upper class kids most BE teams will be blessed with.

It also looks like his confidence is shot. While struggling early makes you stronger sometimes it also goes the other way. You hope he is not questioning if he belongs with this level of comp. When he got stripped of the ball and taken out, he looked totally beaten down. With the way Ellison has been playing I would reduce Mussini's role to what it should be next year just to see if he can knock down some shots and get his confidence back.

While it isn't always a good idea to assess a player's confidence level by analyzing body language, I have to agree with you on this one. The one thing Mussini does well is shoot from deep, and even that has been a problem recently. It can't be fun getting knocked around every game, on both ends of the floor. Bigger guards, which means everybody, love to get Iso's with Mussini, back him down, and shoot over him. When he has the ball, he gets pressure which includes slight hip checks and nudges, which is enough to separate him from the ball. Next year will be so much easier for him. Lovett and Ponds can play the point, and Mussini can roam around the 3 point line. Lovett can penetrate and have 3 shooters set up around the 3 point line.

Malik Ellison is looking much better, looking to prove his doubters wrong!

i have been a doubter...would agree that he is starting to show flashes...

Ditto, mostly because of lack of foot speed. Clearly he is healthier now and moving much better. I can see him being a solid 4 year contributor.

-Team continues to have fight. That is a credit to both the players' integrity and the coaching staff

-Mussini does look worn down from both a physical and confidence perspective. For the remainder of this year he should focus on improving his passing (too many turnovers). The off-season can be for strength building.

-Ellison is playing better. Not going to be a star, but has a higher upside than I had thought a few weeks ago.

-Needless to say, I remain super excited about this program.

One thing Ellison has going is that he plays with confidence. After some of his weaker performances, he could have easily lost it. Maybe it's because he has a father that played in the NBA. Whatever it is, he attacks the rim and never seems timid out there. The good thing is that he is playing better as the season progresses. That was a nice move he made right before the half. He also has no fear of contact, which is nice.

I was very happy w the game considering we got hoosed by the refs and the talent disparity playing the number 1 team on the road. As mentioned Ali had a nice game and Mussini looks worse while Ellison is looking better, had 5 assists. Hope we can win a game or 2 in the BE. What was the story w Sima, still injured?

Mullin indicated in his post game that Sima is not ready to play big minutes this early in his return.

Seems to me like they are well coached.

All valid points that I tried to encapsulate with the phrase lack of talent. in the jack curran days at Molloy the ball would move at a frenetic pace till they got the shot they wanted much like a Carril team. A good shooter knocks it down a bad shooter doesn't. when a coach says attack the basket a good player instinctively picks his spot a bad player goes coast to coast out of control and charges. I think we could expect out of d1 athletes who have practiced together since October the ability to get a good look, and not to fly up court out of control. to be fair. Next years crew will do this instinctively and be able to finish a heck of a lot better. But that doesn't absolve our staff of the responsibility to get this group to play fundamentally sound basketball. A c.y.o. coach can get kids to play hard. that's not enough at this level.

Are we really critiquing the staff after a ten point loss on the road against the #1 team in the country? Ugh

Beast getting the kids to play this hard at this point in a horrible season is not just a testament to the staff, but to the character of the kids as well. Let's not forget how many times we felt that the Norm and Lavin teams just threw in the towel. Special shout out to both Amar and Ron, who continue to be the biggest cheerleaders and heart and soul of this team IMO.

Obviously we are; and with good reason, Mullin and company had a couple of months to recruit and 6 weeks of practice to make this group a well oiled machine. Instead of doing real coaching they are out wasting their time recruiting. AND embarrassing everyone associated with the school by sitting on scorers tables and actually letting assistants coach, imagine that! Time for a change; time for SJU to look to redmen.com for their next coach and put an end to all this misery.

I thought you were serious Logen! :)

Played the #1 team in the country a ten point game on the road. Should we be ranked? :)
