Villanova Game

They need to get Stewart and JDR in the rotation imo... Even for a few minutes here and there... Enough with the 6 man rotation bs...

I think the bigger question is why fans think a walk on and the tag along brother of a recruit need to get on the court more. I'm sorry, but the fact that these guys are even entering the conversation is cause for concern.

Lavin feels "no pressure to win"

#whynot

Just got home 10minutes ago.

Yeah that was real fun, they kicked our asses in the last 10minutes of the game.
Where was JDR until the last 3 minutes?
And wtf happened to Jordan? Held to 0pnts until 2 FTs late in the game.

I'm boiling right now, now we're 0-3 in the conf.
It is BS that the seniors and CO has to play so much with a freaking bench, and yeah Marillac that's on coach Lavin.

Lavin is the coach...it all lands on him. I am very disappointed to lose and fall to 0-3, but I am really encouraged by the effort and some of the improvements on offense. I really think this is a game the team will grow from--which is not much of a consolation at this point of the season.

Harrison is becoming a guy that can consistently create for himself and others instead of having to rely on teammates to set him up. He's getting better every single game.

Jordan can't play that badly again, they can't lose 40-21 on the glass, and CO and Dom simply cannot ever get into foul trouble again.

Can you please clarify what you mean by "improvements on offense"? St. John's competed with Villanova in the 1st half because they were shooting nearly 50% from the field (primarily from D'Angelo and Phil). The 2nd half consisted of bad shot selection (mainly by Phil) and just awful overall play (RySheed was borderline unwatchable).

The only reason SJU was even in this game was because of a stellar game by Harrison. Nothing more, nothing less.

We have been a very poor half court team all year--even in victory. I agree that Phil and especially Jordan made some inexcusable decisions (again). It is painful to watch the same mistakes get repeated. No, Phil, you cannot force a shot right after you made your last every time regardless of the situation. You caught fire in Syracuse because you took smart SET shots, not because you are Kobe. No Rysheed, you are not--and may never become--a good jump shooter. Every time you miss, it is followed by an easy layups or three pointers by the opposition and usually either immediately precedes or comes smack in the middle of an opponent's run.

That written, Branch was more aggressive than usual and against a very good (and physical) team--that is extremely rare. They worked some good inside looks to CO (awful missed dunk) down low and Pointer at the high post. The ball movement was good for 30 minutes and completely stopped after that. It really didn't even look like St. John's was playing for while...it was actually better basketball out of both teams that I saw in the Ole Miss-Kentucky game prior. Of course, that changed the last ten minutes.

Harrison is just ballin. He is taking it to the defense instead of hoisting jumpers. That is basketball at its finest.

This team has no depth, and no size. Gonna be a struggle the rest of the way.

The team has depth and size. However those pieces are not all-around players and it is clearly too difficult for somebody to figure out what to do with those pieces.

There was absolutely no excuse to get all 15 fouls out of Jones, Delarosa and Alibegovic tonight. It was crystal clear going into the game that Pinkston and Ochefu were going to be too much for Obkepa. If you didn't see it coming before, then it was apparently by the middle of the first half. But instead of trying to get even 2 minutes per half out of the 2 of the 3 big bodies sitting on the bench, we went with a 4 and 5 guard lineup until the guards were exhausted from helping on and trying to defend bigs, Obekpa and Pointer fouled out, and Ochefu had his way with us down low.

This in the face of Rysheed Jordan giving you absolutely nothing. I am sure that Delarosa or Alibegovic could have gone 0-6 from the field with 3 turnovers just as easily as Jordan. However they might have grabbed a couple of rebounds and made Ochefu earn his points from the line instead of taking layup practice.

I'm not saying that we have a roster of 9 starters. But the decision to use 6 players is a choice born of poor coaching.

Watching Harrison trying to cover Ochefu at the end of the game really pissed me off. I know the game was out of hand at that point, but seriously why is JDR not in there? Trust me, I'm not saying JDR should be out on the court for a Big East team. But the fact of the matter is St. John's has virtually no size outside of Obekpa, JDR, and hopefully ADR soon. Against players like Ochefu and Pinkston, you can use fouls as a way of slowing them down.

Hey they can learn all they want from this game, but again there's no bench. They can't learn to not get tired and everyone play 40minutes.

Harrison is an absolute warrior, easily my favorite SJU player in the last 15 years. You know he's trying so damn hard to carry his team, but it just isn't good enough. It will devastate this kid if we don't make the ncaa.

St. John's had a three-point lead and a chance to hold for the final shot before halftime with under 10 seconds and Phil Greene raced up court with no clue what he was going to do and got stripped. Harrison gets injured in the process and it set the tone for the 2nd half.
I have to admit when I am wrong so I apologize for thinking our players would run out of steam by February.  They are playing tired NOW.
Of course everyone saw this disaster coming. Our 6th man, Rysheed Jordan, has barely practiced the past two weeks and not only was he not game ready, he was lost in space on offense.  Another great move by the wizard to give him 26 minutes.  The walk on Stewart scored 5 points in 6 minutes and likely would have provided better outside scoring opportunities.  In another brilliant move Lavin decided to go with a 5 guard offense against the bigger wildcats. The net results were easy layups and a 20 rebounding edge. No JDR, no Alibegovic, no size whatsoever.
The last 10  minutes were as good an example of coaching malpractice as we have seen by our lame duck coach.  Poor substitutions, rushing plays instead of set plays, poor 3 point defense and allowing his starters to exhaust themselves leading to a Nova pounding. While getting zero production from Rysheed was a major cause of the second half blowout, not using JDR against Ochefu led to so many easy rebounds that led to baskets that I wonder WTF the assistant coaches say to Lavin to snap him out of his twilight zone.  Doesn't matter anyway. Good bye ranking, hello search committee.

That was one of the most frustrating plays I have ever witnessed. The only thing that matters in that situation is that Nova doesn't touch the ball again. Just awful basketball and we almost lost our best player because of it. Greene is never going to be a guy that can run full speed and make that shot in that situation. He needs to play within his game. The ball needs to go to Harrison there if he's on the court. Nobody draws contact better.

Stewart is a 3 star recruit from an L.A powerhouse school. He had offers from other schools. Why he chose us to be a walk-on is still a mystery to me, however with that said, I'm glad he did. If you can't see that he has talent and a nice stroke idk what to tell you. JDR gives you a 7 foot banger. Nothing more nothing less. He isn't Shaq, however he isn't Curtis Johnson either. Giving him some minutes to give some hard fouls and rip down a board of two isn't asking much and provides CO rest that he'll greatly need as the season season wears on.
Honestly after seeing Dlo bloodied and CO hobbling I wanted nothing more than to see JDR give those fkrs a few hard fouls, even get T'd up. Just saying.

Tale of two halves. First half, we played with them. We shot well. They shot well.

The second half was a different story. Predictably, as we knew even during the 11-1 start, when CO or Pointer get in foul trouble against teams with size, we will be in deep trouble. Both did, and that was all Nova needed to open a lead. Throw in Obekpa's injury (he wasn't the same after), Jordan's abysmal lack of a performance, and that is all you need to know.

Having a rotation of 7 good players is so much better than 6. Villanova played only 7 players more than 10 minutes (Jenkins played 9). Without foul trouble and with Jordan contributing, we can play with these guys.

We got crushed on the boards (2-1 margin), including 12(!!!) offensive boards by Nova. On the plus side, we shot well (48%)

I venture to say this loss was not as bad as it seemed, except for verifying the necessity for us to keep CO on the court against top competition. The loss, while understandable, that we will have to recover from, is losing at home to Butler.

Are we done with the white uniforms?

Is our plan to match Nova's blue with our blue and hope they throw it to the wrong team?

I really like the blue uniforms but we have turned them into our primary jerseys. Plus consider

Butler- Blue
Creighton- Blue
Gtown- Blue
Nova- Blue
DePaul- Blue
Marquette- Blue
Seton Hall- Blue
Xavier- Blue

That is 8 teams in the Blue East that wear the color besides us.

Hey Moose. You could be a color announcer! :)

Game over. 0-5 start last year... 0-3 now. Boy I can't wait for a new coach

Yeah. If we lose, it's Lavin's fault.

Yes I would say so. Im sick of the Lavin apologists. Call me when this "coach" is gone

And you know what, sirvoo, I'm sick of the Lavin haters. If the guy won a national championship here, you'd still find something to complain about.

What? The frustration with Lavin is obvious in this game.

I would bet anything Steve Lavin will never win a Nat. chanpionship. Buddy we haven't sniffed a BE championship in his 5 years and you're talking about National Championships? What's more sickening, me being fed up with watching a program in a rut or people like you continually thinking this is acceptable?

Show me where I ever said this was acceptable. And don't call me buddy. I am not your buddy.

I don't surround myself with negative people who constantly whine and complain.

I'm negative compared to the guy who mentions Steve Lavin and national championship in the same sentence. Get a reality check buddy

What about that exchange between Lavin and Wright... didn't seem too friendly. . Maybe I'm reading into it

From what I understand Jay is not a big fan of steve's.

Anyone need another reason to hate villanova?

"It doesn't surprise me Harrison's brother is in jail"

Talk about classless

Was listening to XM this morning when they ran down last night's scores
They said that Villanova routed St John's
The score might indicate that but anyone who saw the game knows better
We ran out of gas and got stranded on the road in the middle of nowhere

Lavin said something to Wright, and Wright looked right at him and said " You are F' ing crazy" I wonder what Lavin said to him.

Probably accused him of paying off the refs or trying to hurt obekpa intentionally. Neither of those are true I'm just thinking of what Lavin could've complained about. I'm gonna take a look at the exchange on the DVR today when I get home
