Very unrealistic expectations

When and if a poster states an opinion that Mussini, Amar and Freudenberg need to take the majority of the shots then inferring racism may be warranted. All our players seem to get along very well so why try and divide the fan base. Have no problem if LoVett and Ponds take the most shots and are our leading scorers but for the benefit of the team we will need some easy baskets inside from our bigs as outside shooting tends to have off nights. Would behoove the team and staff to figure out a way to get more production inside.

I confess that I have not read every thread here but why and how is race even a remote issue here??? Every single one of our best players is African American. Case closed! Our three European players are support players and will contribute as the season progresses.
Said my piece, don't want to belabor the point as you are right race should not even be an issue. But if you want to know how it became an issue read the opening post of the thread.

I took We Are SJU's reference as humorous sarcasm. It should have stopped there. AMF are clearly lesser talents but Richard is a pure freshman and I like what I see in his potential. I just hope this issue is never mentioned again.

The funny thing is no one was offended by choice number 1 which is being the dumbest person on the planet. :)

See the problem is not people on these boards being overly optimistic, they were just looking for a reason to bitch.
If you went into this season with modest expectations of looking forward to watching as exciting a pair of guards as the school has ever had and hoping we would win 5 or so more games and be competitive....Well then you thoroughly enjoyed the season's first three games. I did!

First off for the love of Kate Upton's boobs, if one more person criticizes Marcus Lovett for being selfish, I will have no choice but to label that person either the stupidest person on the planet a racist or both. SJU best shot is any shot that Lovett or Ponds choose to throw up there. That was the case with most of Harrison's career here as well as Marcus Hatten. If we start to get better offensive players in here and Lovett still is shooting 30 times you can circle back to me. But for right now I am happy with any shot those two take and am not the least bit worried about how many shot a small slow guard that has to be wide, I mean really wide open to get off a good shot gets.
This team is way better than last year but will still only account for 5 or 6 more wins. We are starting from zero. We have to nice building blocks that are fun to watch. Yakwe and Sima are nice pieces but are as raw as anything on the menu at your favorite sushi place.
Enjoy Lovett and Ponds, hope Ahmed can pick it up and Sima and Yakwe improve. If you chose to watch by bitching that is your loss!

An SJU fan racist is they are critical of two guards on a roster that for the past 25 years has been predominately African American? Are you out of your mind? Is a D1 college basketball fan is racist he had better start rooting for another sport and likely at the high school level in Garden City.

At this point the dropoff in offensive prowess after Ponds and Lovett is steep, and there were many on here who predicted NCAAs in Mullin's year 2 and definitely by year 3. Steadfastedly I thought year 4 form the beginning was more realistic once it became clear the cupboard was bare.

Ponds and Lovett are our best two players. period. If they have to shoulder this offensive load, the team will not win. That's a reality, and not a personal shot at either.

Unless there is an overt racist comment, please remove that rhetoric from discussion here. We have had a number of great backcourts in SJU history, so for that matter, it's foolish to proclaim Lovett and Ponds as exciting a pair as any that have played here is just foolish.

I'm not crapping on you, but using the word racist in a discussion of how our team is doing thus far is pretty damned inflammatory.

The constant DLO criticism and recent Lovett sniping coupled with the bizarre pimping of Mussini and German Fred Lyson is very curious. Lovett is 27 shots better than Mussini, end of story. Team has a bunch of issues, Ponds and Lovett aren't any of them.
Every game is different and 27 shot is a lot but that game dictated those 27 shots!

I may be missing something, but I have observed most posters thrilled with Ponds & LoVett. Expressing concern about depending on them so much doesn't mean they are ripping anyone. Regarding Freudenberg & Mussini, both are role players who may or may not contribute much this year. No sense in blowing this up into some social experiment. You don't see their upside, some guys do. Why beat it to death?

PS - I do think Freudenberg will be a solid player at some point. I feel next year this is likely. The Fred Lyson joke may have to be retired. :) If not, he was still worth recruiting.

Not aimed at you, just using your post as a vehicle. To judge Freudenberg or LoVett or any player after 3 games is nonsense. To judge the team after 3 games is just as silly. As far as the racist crack I'm sure the Lyson sarcasm has absolutely nothing to do with them both being white; idiotic look at me posting.

Idiotic is anyone taking cracks at Lovett. Racist thing was mostly sarcastic, though no one seemed to be offended by being called dumb. Maybe touched a nerve with some or some are just comfortable with their dumbness?

Racist is a strong word and as a white guy I am not really in position to judge if anyone is racist and honestly even if some like Mussini purely because he is white, I wouldn't necessarily say it is racist and I truly don't care. I do find it hard to understand why our 7th man is mentioned in more threads than anyone else on the team? Again I don't even care about that. I just think it is silly that people-more than the chucklehead on JJ are taking shots at Lovett for shooting and citing Mussini's lack of shots. Or of some people before the season claiming he should start over Ponds. How about we just agree that a bunch of people on here and JJ don't know basketball all that well?

We've just gone through the most caustic election cycle in any living American's lifetime where that word has been bandied about endlessly. Cops - even cops of color - have been called racist without any basis other than the fact that lethal force has been exerted in confrontations with other men of color, without any examination of the actions leading up to that. So not now, and not ever do I think that careless use of the word "racist" is funny or sarcastic, and using it to describe fan's discussions of a Caucasian player is reckless and divisive, no matter what your intent.

The main reason that Mussini is a frequent topic here is that more than any other returning roster player, Mussini exhibited a capacity to score in bunches. With the paucity of the roster, it's appropriate to speculate whether he had a place in the rotation as a valuable contributor.

Ponds was NYC player of the year, and few if any fans feel that Mussini is the superior talent. You are aware of course, that many coaches give returning players a chance to prove they deserve to play before handing their minutes over to newcomers. I don't think that happened here, but it's meritorious and occurs with some frequency.

You can call anyone you'd like an idiot, but be prepared for the return salvo. Whether you like it or not, or I like it or not, it's fair to discuss whether two undersized guards taking the vast majority of shots is going to result in wins, no matter how good they may be. That's what a website like this is about, and not for you to judge what opinions are valued or not. I would ask though, that your sarcasm exclude the word racism, which evokes the strongest of emotions in people.

Again I also jokingly called people dumb and no one took issue.

So take away whole race thing. You just stated two little guys shouldn't take all the shots. In theory I agree. You want to say he should have maybe tried to drive and dish to SIma and Yakwe more. Gotten them more looks.Ok. Just as long as you know we would have lost by much more.

Now how Mussini getting more shots would solve the "two little guys" taking all the shots, I don't know.

I am of the belief that your best players take the most shots. Right now that is far and away Ponds and Lovett. I am not saying you should not get the ball down low, but the Minny game dictated those shots.

I'd like to know what peoples expectations were for Sima this year.. cause his per 40 #s round out to about 24 pts and 12 rebs while shooting 59% from the field and 67% from the line.

I was hoping for somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 and 7.

Me too, and I thought that would come in about 25 minutes a game. So I am more than fine with what Sima is giving us, just needs to stay out of foul trouble. Think we have 3 quality bigs its just that none of them are offensive oriented. Thats where CJ for 15-20 minutes a game would have been nice.

7&7 is reasonable.

Beyond the stats though, doesn't he seem a bit soft to you? Along with Yakwe and Owens. I think all of these guys are fantastic athletes who are great shot blockers with varying degrees of offensive potential but the team lacks a toughness inside to me. I'd like to see us be a little more stubborn down low. Feels like we go for the big swat too often and if that doesn't happen we're fouling or giving up easy offensive rebounds. Very hopeful that all/any of these 3 will be big contributors but also interested to see if Clark or Brown can help give our bigs more of an identity next year.

"soft" (I agree) is usually a symptom of guys playing defense with their arms/hands. Strength starts from the ground up and position obviously starts with your feet. Even things like steals which get credited to quick hands, actually start with the feet. It is also a symptom of youth. The difference between defense played in Div I college basketball and anywhere else is significant. Other than dramatic blocks and steals leading to fast break dunks, you don't see defense on ESPN highlights and it is very rare for kids to be trying to distinguish themselves by defense. Takes time and maturity to learn.

Agree it takes time for most "bigs" to evolve. He came as under recruited 3 star level kid. As such, I feel he will have his growing pains, but be relatively productive this year. (If he avoids injury of course) My guess he will be "good" his last two years. How Zach Brown, assuming he gets here, impacts that is another issue. At the least we could have two legitimate centers, which has been rare here.

I find I'm concerned with what appears to be realistic expectation namely "just wait till next year and all will be fine." The front court's ability will remain questionable.

His foot work is terrible.
Looks like he improved his FT shooting. What I would like to see from Sima is the ability to gather and go up strong. He seems really unsure what to do down there.

Just to pick up on one topic that was mentioned in this thread, I believe the backcourt of Lovett and Ponds to be the best 1-2 combination since the Lapchick years' Jerry Houston and the late Ken McIntyre. We have had a handful of great guards, but as a combination, I can't think of one before these two that played so well together. I challenge you old timers who recall those two white kids to think of another combination who could beat them for smarts and scoring power.

Agree on gathering himself. He still is a bit "mechanical" offensively IMO. I also think he gets backed down by opponents sometimes on defense, a reflection of absence of solid lower body strength to date. Hopefully hard work on his mechanics offensively & improved footwork will be evident later in the season. The strength issue noted hopefully comes around with off season conditioning program commitment & hard work. I remain optimistic long term, but we'll see.

Maybe because his ceiling is higher, I am actually more(mildly) disappointed in Yakwe's showing thus far. Again as everyone knows only 3 games but still.

If you look at 84-85 starting lineup:
C Wennington
PF Berry
SF Glass
PG Moses
SG Mullin

There were huge stretches of that season where Mark Jackson and Chris Mullin were backcourt mates.
Nobody beats that combo IMHO. These were future NBA all-stars and one a HOFer. I actually think soph Jackson should have even gotten more minutes than senior Moses, who was a quality player in his own right. But that was not Louie's MO.

Again only 3 games but:
Lovett shooting 50 / 80 / 52
Ponds 55 / 100 / 55
That is amazing! WASJU has not had multiple favorite players since Berry / Jackson team.
* I liked Elite 8 team equally but that is a once in a lifetime thing and has its own category.

Fun will produce multiple stats indicating Moses was better that year but I agree with you on Jackson should have played more.
As far as Jackson / Mullin backsourt, they simply did not play that much together as a tandem and Jackson did not really become Jackson until after Mullin left.
The go to SJU backcourt for me is Barkley and Bootsy. If you are going for best pair of guys. Otherwise you could just put Mullin and Kelly or anyone really and have best SJU backcourt but that is cheating.

I saw Seiden/Alfieri in their senior year and that was a great combination but to think that LoVett/Ponds are just three games into their college career is amazing.

Odd journey on this thread/topic. We are 3 games in, lots of new talent, and a long way to go before real chemistry kicks in. The focus should be defense right now, not who's taking the most shots or which freshman is not living up to his billing. Fundamentals; close out on 3 pt shooters, stop lane penetration, communicate, block out. We all saw holes in the first two games, but we won, so it wasn't as deep under the microscope as a loss is. We are in really good shape, and this season will be a big step forward from last season.

You have a number of insightful posts under this topic we are SJU! Thanks & good holiday blessings to you and all on board here!!

Gen,
Good to see you onboard.
Happy Thanksgiving.
