Very unrealistic expectations

See the problem is not people on these boards being overly optimistic, they were just looking for a reason to bitch.
If you went into this season with modest expectations of looking forward to watching as exciting a pair of guards as the school has ever had and hoping we would win 5 or so more games and be competitive....Well then you thoroughly enjoyed the season's first three games. I did!

First off for the love of Kate Upton's boobs, if one more person criticizes Marcus Lovett for being selfish, I will have no choice but to label that person either the stupidest person on the planet a racist or both. SJU best shot is any shot that Lovett or Ponds choose to throw up there. That was the case with most of Harrison's career here as well as Marcus Hatten. If we start to get better offensive players in here and Lovett still is shooting 30 times you can circle back to me. But for right now I am happy with any shot those two take and am not the least bit worried about how many shots a small slow guard that has to be wide, I mean really wide open to get off a good shot gets.
This team is way better than last year but will still only account for 5 or 6 more wins. We are starting from zero. We have two nice building blocks that are fun to watch. Yakwe and Sima are nice pieces but are as raw as anything on the menu at your favorite sushi place.
Enjoy Lovett and Ponds, hope Ahmed can pick it up and Sima and Yakwe improve. If you chose to watch by bitching that is your loss!

An SJU fan racist is they are critical of two guards on a roster that for the past 25 years has been predominately African American? Are you out of your mind? Is a D1 college basketball fan is racist he had better start rooting for another sport and likely at the high school level in Garden City.

At this point the dropoff in offensive prowess after Ponds and Lovett is steep, and there were many on here who predicted NCAAs in Mullin's year 2 and definitely by year 3. Steadfastedly I thought year 4 form the beginning was more realistic once it became clear the cupboard was bare.

Ponds and Lovett are our best two players. period. If they have to shoulder this offensive load, the team will not win. That's a reality, and not a personal shot at either.

Unless there is an overt racist comment, please remove that rhetoric from discussion here. We have had a number of great backcourts in SJU history, so for that matter, it's foolish to proclaim Lovett and Ponds as exciting a pair as any that have played here is just foolish.

I'm not crapping on you, but using the word racist in a discussion of how our team is doing thus far is pretty damned inflammatory.

This is a message board. Every loss will be analyzed, and players and coaches will be criticized by the fans. I came in expecting 15 or 16 wins at best. Even 17 and we sit home in March, so if it's less, who cares. As for Minny, most posters focused on the defensive lapses. For me, that's a long term concern for reasons I have stated. I do agree that Lovett deserves no criticism. His offense gave us a chance to win. The atrocious defense was our downfall. Maybe it was just one of those games. The problem with message boards for college teams is the 3 days to 1 week between games gives all of us too much time to pick apart a single defeat. Let's hope we D up against M. State. Maybe the staff has been putting the time in coaching D, and our guys didn't perform to their capabilities.

The constant DLO criticism and recent Lovett sniping coupled with the bizarre pimping of Mussini and German Fred Lyson is very curious. Lovett is 27 shots better than Mussini, end of story. Team has a bunch of issues, Ponds and Lovett aren't any of them.
Every game is different and 27 shot is a lot but that game dictated those 27 shots!

Going through life seeing things through that prism must be very difficult.

Fans here are hopeful Mussini can be a productive D1 player. You have a problem with that? Lyson, who I saw play here, doesn't evoke particularly strong memories for me. Neither compare with the great players we've had here but I wouldn't christen Lovett or Ponds even in the category of John Warren or Mel Davis - Mel Utley for that matter just yet. Let's not even get to Rencher and Carter - hold on - all of those aforementioned players are... black.

I may be missing something, but I have observed most posters thrilled with Ponds & LoVett. Expressing concern about depending on them so much doesn't mean they are ripping anyone. Regarding Freudenberg & Mussini, both are role players who may or may not contribute much this year. No sense in blowing this up into some social experiment. You don't see their upside, some guys do. Why beat it to death?

PS - I do think Freudenberg will be a solid player at some point. I feel next year this is likely. The Fred Lyson joke may have to be retired. :) If not, he was still worth recruiting.

On the subject of DLO, he was treated appropriately harshly here while he was a troubled underclassman who literally earned a suspension, but I would also say that we'd probably have to reel it back to Mullin to find a player who when he left here was so universally respected and well liked - kudos to him for turning it around 180 degrees.

Both boards. On other there is a thread stating there is no chemistry blaming Lovett for i????. Listen I have no problem with Mussini in this role. That is what his talent dictates. He should not have a bigger role and for people worrying about him getting more shots my question is why?
As for RF maybe he will be a good player, maybe he won't. I do not have a problem with him either but he clearly is not going to be a major part of this years team and people do not seem to want to accept that.
Who else should have gotten Lovett's shots?
If he shot 17 times we lose by 20 plus

Why react to one guy starting an inane thread like that one on JJ? Btw, when I last looked most guys thought it was silly. Thus, most guys support, value & appreciate LoVett, no?

I just want to defend poor Fred here. Dude looked like Curry in high school pregame warmups. He would drain shots from halfcourt no problem. A bad back robbed him of what could have been a decent career.

Here is where I am coming from. I sat through Phil Green and Mussini. Had a brief detour with Jordan, who Lovett is way better than BTW. Maybe I am sensitive to it but I def thought I picked up more anti Lovett sentiment than I could believe. As you pointed out with all the depth talk we really only have 2 and a half guys I want to shoot. I have enjoyed the three games. When we have better players Lovett won't have to shoot as much. I give him credit for keeping that game close.

Here is where I am coming from. I sat through Phil Green and Mussini. Had a brief detour with Jordan, who Lovett is way better than BTW. Maybe I am sensitive to it but I def thought I picked up more anti Lovett sentiment than I could believe. As you pointed out with all the depth talk we really only have 2 and a half guys I want to shoot. I have enjoyed the three games. When we have better players Lovett won't have to shoot as much. I give him credit for keeping that game close.

Fair enough.

But for right now I am happy with any shot those two take and am not the least bit worried about how many shot a small slow guard that has to be wide, I mean really wide open to get off a good shot gets.
This team is way better than last year but will still only account for 5 or 6 more wins. We are starting from zero. We have to nice building blocks that are fun to watch.

To be fair the poster on the other board who started that thread is crazy and it's not like everyone takes him seriously.while I'm sure he is a great guy sometimes I think he posts stuff just to cause some tumult

The first 2 games and 10 minutes of the 1st half there was great chemistry. But as a young team they kind of panicked and reverted back to old ways and Lovett had to lead the charge in the 2nd half and I have no problem in a game like that with the amount of shots he took and I even wrote at the beginning of the 2nd half on the game thread that we would need lovett and ponds to shoot us back into the game and that's what happened

Most good teams at any level need 3 stud offensive players. If anything, the Minnesota game made it evident that at this point we don't have that, and that Sima nad Yakwe aren't quite ready to be offensive players on a good squad. That prob leaves it to Ahmed, who may or may not be the answer. If anything, there is the realization that this team still may be short of being even a mid tier BE team this year. Who knows, maybe another couple of players will emerge, maybe Ahmed, maybe Freudenberg or one of the other guys.

It's clear if Amar was given significant minutes when he was essentially axed from this year's squad tell you all you need to know about the readiness of other roster players to contribute.

I just want to defend poor Fred here. Dude looked like Curry in high school pregame warmups. He would drain shots from halfcourt no problem. A bad back robbed him of what could have been a decent career.

And the way he moved around with his bad back is where RF comparison comes in for me. Nerves, young, whatever, he looks real stiff and unathletic. He can still be a good player, but just based on how he moves around probably not as good some have predicted. Again I threw out Steve Novak and I think some were offended. That is far from a criticism.

Again I don't mean to take this out on you and maybe one day RF will turn into the German Chris Mullin. But what in the three games have you seen that would warrant him getting significant enough minutes to be our third option this year? I do not see that at all.

It's clear if Amar was given significant minutes when he was essentially axed from this year's squad tell you all you need to know about the readiness of other roster players to contribute.

Which is why I was totally on board with his 27 shots
