VCU

For basketball reasons if we were expanding, we would have to take VCU and St. Louis if it's a basketball decision. Dayton just does not have the name brand and they really have barely ever been in the spotlight unlike VCU or STL. I don't care if Dayton gets 100,000 fans at every game...it's the quality of the program on the court we need to focus on. My only qualm with VCU is that their academics are not strong. It's not difficult to get into and it's public as others have said. Do we really want to sell our academic souls? Basketball wise VCU would be great though. I think people are worrying too much that the current conference is too weak. Remember, Providence and SJU should be back...both programs are now getting the players they haven't been able to recruit for a long time. We will be fine.

The only reason St. John's acceptance rate is that low is because the application is free and there is no essay required so every kid in the city applies there because their guidance counselor forced them to apply somewhere. Let's not make it out to be like SJU, Seton Hall and DePaul are Harvard, Yale and Princeton.

Has it always been free? I don't recall that in 2000 when I applied?

It's been free since at least 2007 when I applied.

Pretty sure no one was implying SJU was even in the same universe as Harvard or Princeton. SJU has a long way to go, but it's still #146 nationally out of what 3,000 colleges/universities nationwide? It's nothing to brag about, but it's solid at least. VCU is well below academics wise. It's essentially a community college. And by the way, I have not heard anything about free applications. That sounds very odd, are you positive? I know for grad school it's like $75 or so.

I wonder how much that really affects the rate though...remember many schools have many things that can affect their rates, so it's not like we are the only one. Marist is teetering into the 28-29% range and it's a very good school, but it's likely that low because there are only 5,000 students so spots are limited. There are many factors, but SJU is definitely not seen as a "bad" school...I think the common consensus is that we are a solid, ironclad school academically, nothing great, nothing bad, but slightly above average.

It has a huge effect on the numbers. http://www.usnews.com/education/bes...08/10-colleges-that-get-the-most-applications

I'm just saying as SJU fans/alums/students we shouldn't be critiquing the academics of other schools. I'm sure Georgetown and Nova people would (and do) say the same stuff you're saying about VCU about us.

It's all a hierarchy. Of course Nova and G'Town look down to us academically, but we can look down at schools like VCU. Just because we aren't Harvard or G'Town doesn't mean we are a bad school. There's a ton of in between. All I would consider SJU is slightly above average in the national sense. Are you saying we aren't slightly above average? Our law, business, and pharmacy programs are all around top 50 I believe. While we aren't Nova, we aren't anything to sneeze at.

Joe,
Sorry to burst your bubble but St.John's academics have taken a bit of a fall over the past few years and is not ranked "around top 50" in anything except perhaps free applications.

St.John's School of Law #98 UsNews
St. John's Pharmacy School #62 of 80 schools ranked by USNews

This could be Shaka Smart's last year at VCU. In my opinion the 2013-14 team will be his best team ever. He loses Ju Reddick (possible late first rounder in NBA draft), Rob Brandenberg (Mr. VCU himself after the block against Florida State which help lead VCU to their first Final4 in 2011). The loss of FSU transfer Terrence Shannon will also hurt as this guy solidifies the VCU front court for 2013-14.

I think VCU contends for a VERY deep run in 2013-14 and Shaka may bail after he reaches the pinnacle with this VCU team. His 2013 recruiting class is strong for the A-10 especially with the addition of JeQuan Lewis and 2012 holdover Jordan Burgess. Where will Shaka go? After this year he could be able to name his price.

VCU may take a big step back after Shaka leaves although that fan base is rabid and 1 of the best in all of college hoops. New practice facility may help recruiting regardless on the positive side of things.

I just looked and VCU has a higher SAT score range than us. We shouldn't be looking down on anyone.

US News ranks VCU as the #16 "Up and Coming National University".

St. John's did not make that list.

Lets try to keep this about VCU and their candidacy for a future BE spot and not an academic discussion.

My daughter and wife are taking a tour of the campus now. My daughter is not sure where she wants to go is trying to get a feel of what she is looking for and where she wants to go. My vacation this summer has will be taking her and her brother (starting his last year of Community College and has more of an idea where he wants to go and what he wants to study) on school visits.

Nice to know the application fee is free online.

I know it's wishful thinking but I really hope we stay at 10. The bigger we get the more potential there is for the league to get watered down. Right now I think we have 5 to 6 teams that have a legitimate shot of making the Tournament, and that may very well be par for the course in years to come given our current programs. Think about that, playing in a league where half of your teams are going to the Dance, that's a pretty good ratio. We expand to 12 or 14, I don't think we are looking at 7 or 8 bids like the old Big East, no matter who we add. That my friends is when we become a new Atlantic 10. I admit, I'm probably worrying about it too much but didn't this constant expanding already backfire on the old Big East?
If the current 10 can sell out the BE tourny all is good. Hows it gonna work. Bottom 4 play in on Wednesday night, and we start with 8 on Thursday? Hows that Weds. night draw. Will not look good if MSG empty. We must find a way to sell out the tourny.

The crowd this year on Tuesday night to see the bottom 4 wasn't exactly a packed house.

Before the semis, there will always be empty seats. Even in the quarterfinals, if your team plays in the day session, those teams fans rarley come back for the evening session. Yes, they try to sell the other session on the street, but they are not always successful.

PS Same goes for every tourney in the country, with regard to Quarterfinal attendance.
