@franfraschilla: Great catching up in Maui with one of my all-time hardest working players, Saint John's great, Zendon Hamilton.

Dont know him and never got a chance to see him play but it seems to me that Zendon is really enjoying his time with the team.

What is Z's status with the team?

Pride of Sewanhaka HS, along with Vinny Testaverde.

16/8 guy his senior hear.
Always liked him and still don't understand the hate.

Those are his career numbers. One of our better four year big men. Imagine he played with a point guard.

Obviously a lot more was expected of him and Felipe (and to a lesser extent Tarik) and he was a bit frustrating in his inability to finish or even keep the ball above his shoulders when he got a rebound and wanted put it back up. Don't see any reason for hate, just dreams of what might have been with two of the top 10 recruits in the country.

He played six years in the NBA, albeit a marginal player at that level. It still means that for those six years he was in the top one tenth of one percent in field of employment globally. Pretty good.

The problem with Zendon wasn't what he did while here, which was fine. The problem was that he didn't live up to the hype that preceded him. It was likely unprecedented that we ever nabbed two players (Lopez and Hamilton) in the same class that were so highly regarded. At the time of their commitment, not only were fans hungry and expecting an imminent return to the Final Four during their 4 years at SJU, but using their recruitment as a base for a better talent pool, a national championship caliber team.

Lopez, while good enough to make the pros, was nowhere near as good as projected. In hindsight we can say he was plenty good since he made an NBA roster, but we were expecting a Jordanesque type of player. In Zendon we were expecting a dominant center with the skills of a guard - in high school he often broke the press and would shoot from 20 feet and in. In college we were frustrated by double pumps when he had a clear path to the hoop, and while he put up solid numbers, was never really the dominant center we expected, at least not in the talent laden Big East.

Both were solid citizens here to my recollection, but just as we dump on Mahoney for failing in the end, Hamilton became symbolic of that failure - undeservedly so as we look back.

The biggest thing that held Zendon back was playing in Nassau Class C. If he had gone to CTK he would have lost a lot of his bad habits pretty quickly. He put up great numbers for someone with flaws in his game, though.

@ TIS, Zendon AVERAGED nearly a double double for his career at SJU (16/8). He was a great player for us. Good kid.

Freshman guard Malik Ellison (sore left foot) and sophomore forward Darien Williams (right shoulder) will be game-time decisions, a source said. … Freshmen Marcus LoVett Jr. and Kassoum Yakwe received waivers to make the trip. LoVett has been ruled a partial qualifier — meaning he can only practice — by the NCAA, while Yakwe is awaiting word on his status.
@NYPost_Brazille: The @MauiInv will put early #sjubb optimism to the test:

Z was a valuable player, seemed like a good kid and to last for so long in the NBA even on the margins is pretty good. I met him on line in the Garden waiting for his tickets at the will call window, a real nice guy.

Today let's put it to the players from the "Harvard" of the south.

"Who loves ya, baby?"

I will be very interested in how we perform away from Carnesecca Arena. Hopefully we don't fall behind early against Vandy. Gee, if Stony Brook can go into overtime with them we should be able to stick with them, especially since they are also away from home. Regardless, I expect to enjoy another game from the Johnnies. Keep them coming!

Great kid and representative of the school. Good-very good ballplayer, not nearly in the same class as the great ones: Mullin, Berry, Malik, Artest, etc.

Anyone know if and how game can be streamed? Stuck in office.
