USA Today predicts St.J's to finish "DFL" in BEast

The prediction is absolutely laughable. Anyone who watched last years team (the returning players) and caught even a glimpse of the Midnight Madness (as limited and ridiculous as it sounds) knows St Johns will be much better than a last place team. Three words: NOT GONNA HAPPEN!

What do you expect from a 3rd rate newspaper that most of us only read because we pick it up free in a hotel lobby...? Some intern probably slapped that list together in 5 mins and then went to an early lunch.

On the prediction thread I was ridiculed by Joe for saying that 90 percent of writers are clueless in terms of measuring up out of town teams. Here my friends is where you get the most pin point forecast... Vegas baby. They set it up based on where they think the money will go obviously so maybe it's skewed a bit here since we are a big market team but I'd definitely agree we are in the 25-40 range. The so called journalists(most of whom are a disgrace) predict we will be around 130-160 in my estimates.

I can tell u one thing for sure, SJU will certainly finish higher than Rutgers... and these morons have them at 6!lol!!... by that logic SJU is top 5 imo! :)

Thanks "Dees",
Barring a typo, i just re-sorted that list. We are "tied" for 29th in terms of having the best chances of winning it all... I presume these odds get impacted based on the way (they expect) people to bet...

Actually tied 28 since Field doesn't really count as a team. Also you have LaSalle in the +2500 position but it looks like they're really +25000 so now they're tied for 27th . . . progress. As it stands now they have STJ 5th in the BE. That's pretty good. The biggest indignation is that Rutgers is the only BE team to be assigned to the field. LOL

That said betting lines are based on how the guys taking the bet are going to make the most money, not based on who they actually think is going to win. I got a million people to bet $100 on Temple today they'd quickly jump up into the top ten of odds.

I predict that St John's will be no lower than 7th place in the Big East Coach Lavin will use at least 9 men each position is loaded with great players. including Sampson ,Harrison,Greene, and Opedka.

Easy there killer...I don't think we will finish last either...almost 100% certain of that. BUT...to say we will be no lower than 7th in the Big East that still has Cuse ND, Pitt, UConn, G'Town, L'Ville, Cincy, Marquette, Nova, USF, etc. If I was betting money I would say we finish anywhere from 9th-12th.

5th-8th. We are more talented than a lot of those teams you mention. IMO only 2 schools that I can say are unequivocally at the top and they are Louisville and Cuse. After that, it's open season for 3rd on down...

L'Ville, G'Town, Pitt, Cuse, Marquette, USF, UConn, ND are almost locks to be better than us IMO. I won't complain however if we somehow make it to 5th...we would have to really grow up fast.

Losing Dunlap has to figure into some of the calculations

Marquette lost their best players. Georgetown brings nothing back in the backcourt and lost their best forward. Uconn frontcourt is abysmal with zero returning starters nor producers. THe fact that you even list them ahead of us tells me you know nothing about their roster. They lost 3 starters. Pitt is always solid because of good coaching, but I don't think they have as much talent as we do. If they didn't have an awesome young center in Steve Adams I think they'd be in trouble. Notre Dame is good, but we have beaten them 3 of the last 4 times. We have their number and we have played better Notre dame teams than this one, like the ones with Shrek and Abromaitis. Marquette lost far and away their best few players. Losing Crowder and Johnson-Odom is the equivalent of losing both Harkless and D'Angelo.

I don't see how you say these teams are locks to be better. We return more starters than most of the teams you mentioned. The team we return almost beat Duke AT Cameron year with only 6 freshmen, and we add 7 very talented newcomers. Like in said, we return 5 guys who earned starters minutes last year. We have more depth and talent in both the frontcourt and backcourt than many you mentioned. Only thing we have against us is that biologically we're a bit young. I don't think that is necessarily a horrible thing, because it means our learning curve will be sharper as the season moves along. We won't be physically overmatched by anybody I don't believe, that's another thing we have in our favor this year which we had trouble with in past years.

What calculation is that? Steve Lavin has as many Sweet 16's as Howland, Buzz and Brey COMBINED and he did it without Dunlap.

West Virginia is below us too, so we're tied for 26th. By the way, if you could get a million people to bet in Temple, they should be in the top 10.

So does gaining Darrick Martin.

I don't see 5th either but the only teams I see as locks to be better are Ville, Cuse and UND. No one else returns or recruited so much that they have a definitive sizable advantage over the other 5 schools on your list, STJ, Cincy (who will probably be better than 2 or 4 teams on your list), or Rutgers. I see SHU, Nova, Depaul and Prov firmly in the bottom 4. As it usually is in the BE it is again.
