Up Next: Creighton

I didn't watch the game and haven't read through this thread.

So could someone tell me who I'm supposed to hate today?

Thanks in advance!

No haters allowed. Or is that h8rz?

You missed a great game! The Creighton coach's kid was virtually unstoppable and was as good as advertised. That is all.

Kewl!

But seriously, I don't want to look like a chump and say "I hate Lavin" when the board is only lukewarm in its hatred today.

How about Phil Greene? There's an 86 percent chance after every game he will be blamed for something. So can I hate on Phil Greene?

It's amazing to me that branch made one bad play when he threw it off the backboard, and he didn't see the floor again. Nobody else on the team has that short a leash. Greene doesn't fight through a screen and ends up getting posted up on a center, and they get an easy bucket, but he gets to stay in the game.
Branch played 23 minutes and gave us very little. He played the first 4 minutes of the second half, and not his fault alone but thats where the game was lost. Dom only played 12 minutes and was on the bench to start the second half. I have not knocked the coach all season because I believe it's up to the players to play. Doms on the team to create havoc with Creighton's offense to start the second half. Thats a part of the game we have had trouble with. Why was Branch out there. You sayin Branch has the short leash, but he got 23 minutes. Dom , who we needed out there got 12 and was on the bench at the worst time possible. Not saying Branch not useful, but I think he plays timid. We never gonna win with offense. I want the wild guy out there going full speed. Of course I might be wrong, but I have given up our winning with a conventional offense.

Your right.
I wanted to see Dom back in the game so he could pick up another foul that had to go to the monitors to be reviewed.
Dom is a specialist. That D on McD was special. Was that play the start of our first half run? Still think Dom should be starting the second half. Of course the team coming out like like delicate flowers made me sure I was right. If Branch had made a play during that time I might have thought it was the way to go. Pointer had 3 assists in a few minutes in the first half, team had 5. I can buy Branch being out there when Sheed sits, but why 3 guards when we defending Godzilla. Branch gonna bite his toe?

What exactly is Dom a specialist for? Not even attempting to rebound? Making everyone think he's a stud defender when he's, at best, average?

I'm sorry, but I do have to laugh at all of the posters who actually believe this team is going to make a run in the Big East Tournament. Can we just face the fact that we are rooting for a below average team? They're 2-6 in conference play and their most impressive wins this season are against 12-8 Seton Hall and 11-9 Butler.

Listen, we can talk about blown charge calls, moving screens, and not closing out on the unanimous POY. But let's not forget the awful start to the second half that made it virtually impossible to win that game. Good basketball teams rarely are on the losing end of a 15-1 run. And there seems to be a story after every single game.

I'm not saying don't root for our team. Like most of you, I'll go to my fair share in February because I love this program. But it's time to accept the fact that our team just isn't very good and we probably shouldn't expect a reversal of fortunes anytime soon.

I never said that I believe they`ll make the ncaa tourny.
Here`s what I typed: "If they keep this up and some how make the NCAA then I won`t doubt Lavin ever again.

That`s different then saying I believe they`ll make it

I'd rather have Branch on the floor during a bad game than Dom at his best. I can't believe I am writing this after the year he had last year and what I expected of him. He has flatout regressed, and he has no sense of his identity on the basketball court. Literally, out of the ten players on the court t any given time, Dom is the least likely to get an offensive rebound. Sad.
Dom is a mistake waiting to happen late in any game and his rebounding #s have quickly turned from disappointing to disgusting. His defense is so overrated because he makes 2-3 sensational plays every game, but nearly all of them have nothing to do with solid on-ball defense. In fact, most are born from his mistakes or risks.

Must you complain about Dom's offensive rebounding in every single post you make? It's getting comical at this point.

I'll stop complaining when he gets an offensive rebound! What does he do? What is the point of having a player like him? He hasn't had an offensive rebound in four games! He's had just one in the last eight games. How can any team win with an unskilled offensive player that won't even attempt to hit the offensive glass to do some dirty work?

I don't ever want to see him on the court again. Period.

LoL I totally get it, you don't have to convince me. I just find it funny how you manage to work this into every post lol

I must be in the very slim minority that is some what pleased with the effort/defense and gameplan (I use that term VERY loosely) of the Redmen last night. The boys fought back. Yes we were down early as usual and it was our own doing but once we played sju ball we came back.

CO suprised me with some moves. Overall I am happy that we a shot to win it in the end. RJ is a Prime Time Player. A Diaper Dandy!! (Dick Vitale voice) I love the confidence he showed both in the huddle and in the waning moments of the game.

Lets see what happens when they come to the garden. I just took monday 2-10 off because I want to celebrate that win long into the night at stouts lol.

Nope. No hating today. It was not a game we expected to win. We could have won. But we didn't, so why hate on anyone? We battled hard, fought valiantly, etc. Maybe we could have done a better job poking the coach's kid in the eye, but hindsight is 20/20 and sometimes 50-50 on this board..

I would take today off and save the ridicule, invective, innuendo, slander and lambasting for another game. There is plenty of BB left to play. Set a spell, put your feet up, sip some tea, reminisce about 1985... After all, things could be worse - we could be Butler fans.

Well, it looks as if sitting on the bench motivated Obekpa. I was surprisingly impressed with his aggressive moves inside. Don't stop now. But I also look at God's Gift and wonder how he feels after limited minutes last night. Afterall, he was playing a lot more recently. Mind games?

Gift played more because CO was sick/ not producing. Last night CO played extremely well. Therefore, Gift's minutes dropped. No head games.

We have to do something about our switching on picks. Afterall, besides McDermott taking smaller guards into the pivot, how about their 6'11" center eating up Branch and Hooper on a switch. You got to talk to each other!

The switching was designed to prevent them from lighting us up from the 3. Apart from McDermott, it worked. If they got a mismatch inside, so be it. I thought the game plan was terrific and fairly well executed. But for the drought to start the 2nd half, and a couple of questionable calls by the refs, we win this game.

Btw, I always wonder if refs, as a unit, talk about the calls after the game and whether the go back and study their calls to see if they were the right ones. One would have to imagine that they do. I know that the respective conferences, as well as the NCAA, evaluate them for post conference assignments. I remember the ump that cost a pitcher a perfect game when he incorrectly called a runner safe. He came out like a man and admitted he blew the call. I've never seen a basketball ref (or any other ump) come out and do this. It would be refreshing.

The team played hard and, for the most part, pretty well, but the last play was a joke
It was very clear to anybody that saw the game that they were going to try to get the ball to McDermott
Why, oh why, would you have Obekpa guarding him on the perimeter?
To call it a coaching blunder is putting it mildly
Certainly, there were better options (ie: Pointer, for one)

Mark, unfortunately Obepka didn't guard him on the perimeter. If you look at the replay which I did four times, as a Creighton player dribbled to the right, for some unknown reason CO left McDermott and started to drift back toward the basket. As a result he was late to get around a pick. What was he thinking? Hence, one of the Fox analyst asked, " How do you leave McDermott alone"?

I think the Marquette blog put it best:

PRO TIP: Guard the guy who's shooting 4-8 behind the arc on your last defensive possession of the game, even if the plan all game long was to let him do whatever he wanted. I mean, REALLY? You're going to let McDermott just wander down the court and camp out behind the arc so Jahenns Manigat can just toss him the ball that easily?

It was an embarrassing and humiliating end to a great comeback but McDermott was allowed 36 points before that shot so the staff not emphasizing denying him the ball is what lost the game and not poor Obekpa. If Sanchez was not such a weak and foul prone defender that should have been his assignment all game but he tries to an outside shooter where he is as reliable as Harrison and Sampson.

Plus, he still is charging the guy he's guarding allowing him to drive past him. Not the first time and probably not the last.

What we took away from last night's game is that they can beat this team

Have to agree

Then CO must have been sick all season because he has been terrible all season.

I disagree. The stat sheet definitely does not show it but kids on the opposing team fear CO, they know he is a shot blocker and they know there are other members on our squad who can shot block too and opposing players are very hesitant to drive to the basket. I think he deters a lot of drive/penetration attempts and has kids second guessing making a move to the hoop opposed to taking a jumper. So in this sense, CO is very undervalued. Kids today are extremely conscious of being rejected, for whatever reason, perhaps its the constant media and camera scrutiny, but kids today fear being on the receiving end of a rejection more than anything.

I don't think anyone mentioned the Sampson dunk. Great highlight.
