Up Next: Creighton

Whitesell came in with a reputation for game planning -- some of St. Louis' biggest wins were supposedly drawn up by him. Let's see what he's got.

Very tough game. Creighton is a very tough minded team who fights for rebounds but especially loose balls. We will have a tough time matching with McDermott (obviously) but Creighton has players beside him. Wragge brings a unique problem but Creighton has other athletic and aggressive players. If we bring the same intensity as Butler we have a legitimate shot. If we see the team from the first 19 games it is a blowout.

I might try Jordan on Wragge, harass him all over the COURT. Make it difficult to get the ball to him in any offensive set.Jordan's quickness could disrupt his shooting .

We need to use our quickness and make the BLUE jAYS play defense.. I'd look to exploit one on one situations, if they present themselves. No doubt, Creighton will zone us and Sanchez in the high post needs to use his inside passing skills and try and play 2 man basketball with Jordan and Branch..

As stated before, Providence created the blueprint to beat CREIGHTON.. Get McDERMOTT in foul trouble early.

Make McDermott and Wragge play defense. Put pressure on them. St. John's played more aggressively against Butler than they have in a while at both ends. The ball moved quicker. The press didn't work so well, but we played hard in the man to man and picked up full court. Gotta keep doing that. Also, Harrison has to get more shots. They have to keep him involved all game. He goes through stretches like last night where he gets a couple early and doesn't get a shot for a while. Then he goes cold. He should be taking 15 shots a game.

From the Post article put up by Paultzman:

“I felt if we could force a faster tempo, our deeper bench would help us,” Lavin said.

Hear. Hear.

I echo cappy's sentiments. Follow up on your shots. I noticed at least three occasions where DLo and Jakarr would have had the ball back if they only took a few steps forward instead of standing there admiring their shot.

Many of us have been saying this since the first game! :yell:

Does this mean we will see more of what works, or we will see more of what obviously doesn't work?

It is no coincidence that this better lineup (finally!) and the faster tempo resulted in Butler's worst home loss in 10 years.

Hopefully Coach has finally seen the light.

Realize he would have a height advantage, but if we're looking for someone to simply get inside Wragge's jersey all night long and do some ball denying (or at least five fouls worth) maybe this is a spot opportunity for Felix.

Likely loss against a better team in hostile environment. Creighton is far better than last place Butler. That said, if we don't win, it is essential not to get blown out. Coming home for Marquette on the heels of two well played road games is fine. We have dug our own hole and it will be difficult to dig out of it. Gaining confidence on the road may lead to stealing an away game or two, but doubt this is one. Hope I am wrong.

I agree this is a very tough game to win. We need to continue to play with intensity on D and share the ball on O. I like the idea of Jordan playing Wragge; also keeps him available for the kickout after a defensive rebound something I also saw for the first time yesterday - the committment by the rebounders to get the ball to Branch or Jordan. Nice to see.

To add, I wouldn't double McDermott. Whether he is guarded by Sampson or Dom, just let him go one one one. Try to deny as much as possible first. Let him get his 30 points that way, and don't let guys bury open three's or get offensive rebounds because our players were trying to help. Guys like Wragge aren't going to create offense, but they will break your back with a open three if you cheat to help.

Completely agree with letting McDermott have his whatever 30. Would put Dom on Wragge and Sampson on McDermott. Someone has to cover Brooks well, maybe thats Branch/Jordan. Not sure who D'Lo would. And I think CO would be really needed for their 6'11" center (he was pretty much toying with Gtown),

@StJohnsBBall: After last night's win, #SJUBB owns a current RPI of 75, with the 35th-toughest schedule in the nation (9-3 home; 1-3 road; 2-2 neutral).

Well one thing is for certain: With two straight wins, including one on the road, they have restored hope for the time being. This team has talent, has only been blown out once, and hopefully are starting to assert themselves for long stretches in a game.

Nothing quiets a hostile crowd than an opponent opening up a double digit lead, and maintaining it.

You cant be serious. It's a waste of a defender. He only takes three pointers and he's like 6'8. Teams get in trouble giving up offensive rebounds (Creighton takes a ton of threes and therefore has a ton of long rebounds) or helping on McDermott, allowing Wragge to get space. He's like Steve Novak. Sanchez could even guard Wragge...the key is to stay disciplined.

Creighton has a couple of other guys that can create other than McDermott, namely Chatman and Gibbs, that Jordan will have his hands full defending.

Gibbs out. Devin Brooks, St. Ray's kid is playing well.

I just figured he'd be back like everyone else against us. I've been high on Brooks all year. What a great JUCO pickup by Coach McDermott in the offseason.

63rd in the Pomeroy rankings. Creighton is #2.

What do you guys think about playing Hooper a more this game? Creighton is not a fast team so he should be able to stay with his man on defense and if Wragge does get hot from three maybe Hooper can offset that with few threes of his own. I know we in no way want to get in to a shooting contest with these guys, that's no win situation, but maybe Hooper can add something this game.
