UNLV Coach Fired

If Cal hangs on long enough Hoiberg can replace him. He probably already hates the NBA by now.

Howland would have apparently been very interested in UNLV if it opened last year. Instead, they retain Rice, lose Howland, then fire Rice at midseason. Sounds like something St. John's would do.

If Jarvis had gone to the Wizards after his second season at SJU, we would have hired Wright. He was coming off an NCAA season at Hofstra. Two amazing things to consider...

1) Looking back on it with 20/20 hindsight, can anyone imagine that Mike Jarvis was actually seriously considered for an NBA coaching job?

2) How good would we be right now if Jay Wright had been our coach since 2001?

Wright's not going anywhere. Never say never, but he loves the area, loves the school, has ties there going back to their championship season, and his wife was a student there. He has a great relationship with the school and is loved from the President down to every student. If he was interested in money, there are much better jobs and he's never entertained them.

Agree Beast, although if the Kentucky job opened up I could certainly see him having an interest.

already turned down Kentucky before Calipari

The fact that he wasn't interested at one juncture doesn't mean he make not be interested at another. Roy Williams wasn't interested in the NC job when Dean retired, but he was a few years later. I know Jay is immersed in everything Villanova, but if he stays at Nova years from now he will likely be looked upon as a very good college coach. If he winds up at Kentucky, years from now he could well be looked upon as one of the greats. Plus his personality and sense of style seems like a perfect fit for Kentucky.

Different animal. Wright isn't a climber as far as I can see. I'd never say never, but he is a genuine relationship person, and at this point in his life, unless the money was absolutely ridiculous, I don't think he'd be interested in starting over somewhere else, especially where the expectations (=Championship or bust) are sky high. He's paid really well, and is so integral to all aspects of university life, that he's in a perfect situation for himself.

Good points. If I recall there were two stumbling blocks: 1) Jordan wouldn't give Jarvis an extended contract, and 2) SJU refused to hire junior were Jarvis to leave. Failing on both accounts, that was the beginning of the demise of Jarvis. He developed an animosity towards the university as well as being "stuck" in the SJU HC job, and it was all downhill from there.
